Shadow Ridge Golf Club
About
Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.
Options? You want options!
Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.
The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.
"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Pace of play
Pace of play was a big disappointment people playing from black tees not capable of playing of gold tees. On one hole had 14 or 15 shots.
Bring your sand wedge and a rake.
Great time playing today at Shadow Ridge. Played from the Gold tees and found many sand bunkers. Greens that were like the Dipper at Belmont Park. Friendly staff everywhere! Definitely a course to find my way back to.
amazing experience
From start to finish this course has everything. The staff are welcoming, helpful and well informed. You collect your clubs and cart and meet another set of people who live up to all expectations. You cannot ask for anything more for a truly great game of golf - lovely course, challenging, great scenery and the staff are amazing. They even ask how you got on at the end - and are genuinely interested! What more could one want?
Fantastic desert layout
Great course. Difficult but fair. Need to make sure you play the proper set of tees
Visitor from Vancouver
Hot, humid day. Only took 3 hours.
Greens a bit sandy. Great Hot Deal on Golf Now!
Know your limits
Playing golf anywhere in August is very difficult in Palm Desert it is dangerous....Bring two water bottles and fill them at least five times each round... They provided a towel that should be soaked and worn around the back of your neck tucked in at the collar... Rest in the plentiful shade.
Use a ball retriever when searching in the brush for your ball....anything that moves will move before you are too close.... The fairways were in great shape but the greens were under dressing....I play two to three shots each time so after making about 150 swings you need a rest...I let two 20 somethings who hit from the black tees pass me and they were very courteous....people in the desert off season seem to be extremely polite, including the staff here....Enjoy
Hidden gem
Nice place to play. Whomever is the golf architect on this course did a great job. The 18th hole is there signature hole.
Great Play
This is a great play at the right price unless you are not concerned about money. This play is excellent under 30 for the average player and upto 50 for the more wealthly endowed. The course is immaculate and very enjoyable. Wide fairways, large greens, great carts with GPS. No water supplied but coolers every few holes. Back nine a little more challenging and 18th is their hole you will never forget. You get a par here and you can brag forever. 6200yds is a good play, test your ego and take it back two more to the tips.(good luck)
Beautiful yet challenging course
Overall this course is by no means difficult but there is enough overall length, bunkers and protected greens that will present any weekend/average golfer with a few challenging shots throughout the round.
Great course
We had an amazing summer round. A bit windy in the morning but that died down on the back nine. Greens had just been punched but still rolled pretty well. Greens seem like they would be a challenge when running at full speed. Beautiful scenery and well designed. We played the gold tees and could see how the back tees could provide a good challenge to the low handicap golfer.
greens are sandy this week
the best driving range in the desert
the best Marriot course in So. Cal., that being said the greens are under repair this week.
difficult to putt straight but I still recommend this course to everybody
Beautiful Course- One of my favorites
This course is challenging but friendly. It has a lot of beautiful holes that seem to be all by themselves.
A pleasure to play!
Great Course!
I played in the summer heat, but water and ice is provided. The only negative is that the greens had been punched, but that is to be expected in late July. This is a challenging course, but fun!
Abominable Greens
Nice fairways, excellent golf course but greens were uputtable even thought pro shop staff told us that the greens, (having been punched 2 weeks ago) were very puttable. Thus, I rate the pro shop as being misinformed or selling players a bill of goods. The greens were not puttable, i.e. slow, course and uneven. Any knowledgeable greens person knows that greens can be airiated in such a way as to leave them very puttable, true and fast.
Nine holes closed.
GolfNow and the golf courses website made no mention of nine holes being closed for aerafication. I would not have booked the round if I would have been told about playing the back nine twice. With that being said, I do enjoy this course. It was a little crowded on the course. We waited for a twosome in front of us on a lot of holes. No Marshall on course. I mentioned the waiting to the beverage girl. The twosome came back to us and let us play through. The beverage girl went above and beyond her duties for us (Thank You).
Course in Great Shape - Pace of Play Horrible!
I have played Shadow Ridge many times and it is a first class facility and golf course. Of all of the public courses in the desert, it is in the very best shape right now.
However, I quit after 9 holes as I was on caught up with a twosome at 8 and it took me 45 minutes to get through 8 and 9. After sitting on the 10th tee and watching 2 foursomes chop up the course for 20 minutes I decided to quit. Too bad and they should have a Marshall out there even though it is the summer out here. When I left the course after 9 holes, as a single my pace of play 2 hour and 20 minutes. Most of the other courses like the Marriott Desert Springs or the Westin I play 18 holes in 2 hours and 40 minutes.
We definitely will come again
We are mid-handicaper and booked this course at short notice for a round in the afternoon. The course itself is imbedded in a Marriott vacation facility and well maintained. Not difficult at all to play but sometimes challenging. As prior to our tee-time a group of children started the staff was exerted to find a hole were we could start to avoid stand by time. Thanks again for that.
My new favorite in Palm Springs area
I'm a 14 Handicap.
This is a beautifully landscaped facility in Palm Desert. Love the design! Could be extremely challenging from the tips. Generous, well-maintained fairways and wonderful, true-rolling greens. No funny trick undulations to frustrate your round. Faldo knows what he's doing.
Tip: In the summer play early in morning, say before 7:00am. Desert heat can be a serious problem towards end of round.
Course Amenities: A+
Great Summertime value
We had a great time and the summer pricing made it a great value. Luckily it wasn't blazing hot that day.
