Shadow Ridge Golf Club
About
Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.
Options? You want options!
Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.
The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.
"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Love it.
Lots of sand bunkers make it challenging . hills and humps add more interest. Not as many houses so close as on some of the others. We like the natural shrubs and dessert surroundings. W3 will be back!
Nice course but slow play
While on our winter getaway from the Pacific Northwest, my wife and I played Shadow Ridge. We found the course to be extremely friendly off the tee but your approach shots had to be dead on or else you would be penalized around the green. As a 9.5 handicap player the course required me to stay focused. For a high handicap player, the play around the greens would be challenging. I'm sure if you played the course every week I would become familiar with the undulations and hazards around the greens. Our saving grace was playing with a great couple, they both have played the course multiple times so they coached us on each hole. The pace of play was slow but bearable. The staff at the course made us feel special and were extremely friendly. I give the staff the highest rating for their customer service, keep up the great job.
Got awesome price off of GolfNow Hot Deals
Best price off a hot deal on Golf Now 36 dollars each started at 12:45 and was able to finish 18. Awesome course in great shape, friendly staff, good pace of play best bang for the buck so far this year !
Cool morning but course made up for it
Morning started out very cool but found the course very playable. Wide fairways, tricky greens with some undulation but more with the subtle breaks. Very pretty course and holes not real close together so you have the feel you are out there by yourself. Not a true "desert" course as there are many trees. Helped that I played well. Staff was not real friendly and almost seemed to avoid us. I really enjoyed this course and would definitely go back.
A must play golf course.
Shadow Ridge is one of my top 5 courses in the valley. The fairways and rough are perfect in height. The greens are difficult to read but are realistic.
Cart paths only.
It was a pity that it was cart party's only, which unnecessarily slowed the pace of play down. To try to speed up the pace the ranger asked us to play three holes using 90 degrees, why could this not be done at all holes ?
The halfway stop was a cart, you do not pass the clubhouse. Otherwise a good facility.
Extremely Slow Play
While the course was in excellent shape, the pace of play was extremely slow - Close to 5 hours to play the round. On more than 1 occasion there were 3 groups waiting on a tee box. We were behind 2 threesomes who were waiting for a slow foursome. The course marshal said we were within the pace of play guidelines. He made no effort to improve things. After looking at the scorecard, it said the standard was 4.5 hours per round. Unfortunately in my opinion that is a very low standard. There is no reason you cannot complete a round of golf in under 4 hours, especially with carts. My wife and I often complete a round in under 3 hours so anything over 3.5 hours seems slow to us. The course itself is beautiful and I would play it again given the right conditions but when you wait on every shot, it is difficult to get any consistent timing. I would say that the course staff that we had interaction with was cordial but not friendly. It felt like a bit of a stuffy atmosphere to us. We played 9 times on our vacation (8 of those rounds were in under 3.5 hours). If we were to rank the 9 times we played on pace of play and friendliness of staff, this course would be the worst of the 9 while probably having the best playing conditions.
Great Course and Even Better Instruction!
We went down for a 2-Day instruction school at Marriott Golf Academy, so had the opportunity to play the course twice.
There are several sets of tees and the fairways are very generous, to suit every type of player. The greens are large and undulating, but not terribly fast, so again it allows players from every level to compete.
We had a great experience playing, but the true highlight of our short trip was instruction at the Academy by Senior Instructor, Mike Ellis. Even though our handicaps and skill levels are very different based on the length of time we've played the game, Mike was able to assess our swings in all aspects of the game and give us immediate feedback, plus take-away drills that we can work on to improve our games going forward. They also have state of the art video equipment that allows you to access your video at any time to recall the finer points of your lesson. Mike was professional, friendly, easy to talk to and we both felt that we could not have asked for anything more at the end of our two days. Highly recommended!
Four Hackers
Beautiful course in very good shape for the last day before overseeding. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The course was challenging but fair. Play from the appropriate box, long from the tips, perfect from the golds.
Fun and Challenging
This is the second time I've played this course and it's one of my favorite in the area. The staff is friendly, carts have GPS and Yardage, and are equipped with towels, tees, coolers, and ride nice. The course itself is in good shape. Fairways are plush and wonderful to hit from, rough is cut low so you can still hit a wood if needed. Bunkers for the most part are good, but some could use a bit more sand. The course is moderate when it comes to open space, so place your shots where needed. If the GPS shows trouble, it's pretty much right on. For long ball hitters you will have troubles on a few holes as bunkers and water have been placed precisely in your way. Overall I like this course as you will use quite a few different clubs and really get to work on your game. The greens are very hard this time of year October, and watch the grain as it does make a difference.
Great Course
Loved the course but didn't love the bunkers. Lots of them. Stay out of them and then it is heaven. Well maintained, greens are true and even the bunkers had nice fluffy sand. Will go back now that I have a better idea of the course. You should go!
Great fun
Staff was great, told us to hit some balls then jump right out. No one there in the afternoon we got around in 3 hours and had a great time. Course was in good shape and fun to play.
Pace of play
Pace of play was a big disappointment people playing from black tees not capable of playing of gold tees. On one hole had 14 or 15 shots.
Bring your sand wedge and a rake.
Great time playing today at Shadow Ridge. Played from the Gold tees and found many sand bunkers. Greens that were like the Dipper at Belmont Park. Friendly staff everywhere! Definitely a course to find my way back to.
amazing experience
From start to finish this course has everything. The staff are welcoming, helpful and well informed. You collect your clubs and cart and meet another set of people who live up to all expectations. You cannot ask for anything more for a truly great game of golf - lovely course, challenging, great scenery and the staff are amazing. They even ask how you got on at the end - and are genuinely interested! What more could one want?
Fantastic desert layout
Great course. Difficult but fair. Need to make sure you play the proper set of tees
Visitor from Vancouver
Hot, humid day. Only took 3 hours.
Greens a bit sandy. Great Hot Deal on Golf Now!
Know your limits
Playing golf anywhere in August is very difficult in Palm Desert it is dangerous....Bring two water bottles and fill them at least five times each round... They provided a towel that should be soaked and worn around the back of your neck tucked in at the collar... Rest in the plentiful shade.
Use a ball retriever when searching in the brush for your ball....anything that moves will move before you are too close.... The fairways were in great shape but the greens were under dressing....I play two to three shots each time so after making about 150 swings you need a rest...I let two 20 somethings who hit from the black tees pass me and they were very courteous....people in the desert off season seem to be extremely polite, including the staff here....Enjoy
