horrible pace of play no marshall in sight.. they were 20 mins behind
Challenging Track
This is a challenge for a bogey handicapper such as myself. It helps to have someone with you that has played here previously, some of the holes are tricky to navigate. Also, bring a few extra balls - lots of opportunities to lose some along the way with all of the 'environmental areas' on every hole. Bring your A game!
Shot makers course
Course was in excellent shape ! Being able to know where to put your ball off of the tee and on the green will save you a lot of strokes. First time I played this course I thought it was almost unfair but now on my third round you really learn the course and it becomes a true players design. Live in St Louis and visit here every year and Callippe will always be on my play list.

Bill's Tale
Probably the best muni in the Bay Area. Gorgeous setting.... challenging but fair layout...great course conditions
Great course. Slow play.
Played in 5 hours. I get Bay Area weekend play but, 4 some in front of us was not playing ready golf which didn't help. Marshalls comment about "just a lot of people on course" didn't make sense. Isn't their job to ensure people are playing ready golf on busy days?
Too crowded and slow
Walking should no be allowed on this course. It is too long and has too many elevation changes. People who walk simply slow everything down.
Location it is on top of hill so little bit of out of the way driving is necessary, overall experience is good.
Good Public Course
The threesome that joined me on one had already played the front, decided to not wait another three and a half hours to play back nine. 7 hours to play a round of golf? TOTALLY NOT ACCEPTABLE. But, since I know that this course has been slow since day one, I come out late and play the front twice, get in 18 holes and I'm good with it. Do not expect to tee off near 2pm and expect to finish 18. You will have a six hour round. Great views of valley and no noise from cars or p[lanes. Good course, good layout, long day if you want to play 18. Its been the same since 2005. Good for them, making money in this business has been tough on some courses closing and all, must be nice to squeeze in every golfer. This place is not hurting for business.
A Course Worth Playing
First time playing all 18 holes. Played the back nine a year and a half ago. Got a good deal on Golfnow so went down and played. The course was in great condition, actually had sand in the traps I went into. Back nine is totally different from the front nine. Nice layout and I played with another twosome, father and son, the father plays here often and I got some good tips. If you haven't played here before you need some course knowledge, some holes you need to hit to some areas. The only thing was slow play. We were a threesome and the group in front were a foursome with three walkers. They weren't the problem, just slow play in front of them. Took almost 5 hours but I really enjoyed the course and will play it again.
Great job with the course BUT...
The course was a good playing course which challenged my skills. The only thing which caught me off guard was that the clubhouse staff was not as friendly as I expected. I had asked since there were open gaps prior to my tee time (at least half hour). I thought they would let me out earlier but they sent me out exactly on my tee time. Logically, it was not a welcoming customer experience.
Good course
Pace of play was super slow, 24 minutes on one tee box waiting.
Super slow play
3 hours to play front 9; sometimes 4 groups on each hole. Not sure if they send out too many groups or the golfers don't understand proper pace of play rules. More than one Marshall would help.
Perfect Time of Year
The rainy season has worked its magic on Callippe. The course is in lush conditions compared to the dry summer and fall seasons. This is a perpetual favorite for my golf buddies when we're looking to escape the Bay Area.
We usually go for the twilight rates for the value, but it can be slow - I don't think we've ever finished a round under 5 hours. Not sure what it's like after they've been freshly cut in the morning, but the greens were bumpy at times. Our group struggled more than usual from the 4-6 ft range.
Really wish they would redo the practice green near the first tee! It's way too much slope to be of practical use. Just one minor on course suggestion to flatten the black/blue tee box on 16 so we aren't forced to play a draw or fade :)
