Callippe is best course very nice
the Calliope golf course somewhat challenge many different way course and more slope on green putter mild rolling down some fast
Another 5 1/2 hour round
I have played this course several times, and despite my frustration with the pace of play I continue to try it out because of the overall layout and location. Its an interesting and challenging layout with decent greens. Overall the course conditions are on par with other muni's and a good value. The downside to this course is its pace of play. I have never finished a round in better than 5 hours. They stack people up on tee times and do not have any marshals to monitor pace of play. Its always amazing to me to see how slow some of the groups are and inconsiderate of anybody else on the course. We did manage to finish in the dark but it was like a death march in front of us waiting on every shot. Other than that this course has great potential.
The course calliope is best layout.
During spring or summer time. There have nice full view all over see mountain large view. Plus. While there course best layout very good green is all and love there place. Thumb up !!!!!!
Fun Course-Great Shape
Visiting from Los Angeles, I wasn't sure what to expect. It turned out to be one of the best courses for the value, hands down. Although it was 40 degrees, the course was in great shape and it was a really fun round. If you hit your tee shots in the right zones, you get some really good, golf shot approaches. The kind the complete stranger, who is now your golf buddy says, "that's a golf shot". The two finishing holes are good, but brutal. The staff was unremarkable but the course made up for it. It was also freezing cold at 9am the day after Christmas. I can't wait to come back in the spring time.
I'll be back
Got a great deal by paying 50% in advance ($50 pp).
Course was in great shape and had a wonderful time. 2 or 3 groups in front of us I understand were very slow and never saw a Marshall to get them moving.
I'll be back.
Challenging Course
A lot of risk/reward holes with fast greens.
Nice views and a very quiet location.
Course is challenging...lots of dirt areas in fairways
Lots of dirt in fairways...greens are mult colored but roll evenly fun course to play
Challenging Local Course Fun to Play
Played as a single on a Tuesday at 10:30 and paired up for a foursome. Weather was great, no wind, and pace of play was much better than usual at just over 4 hours. Recent rains have somewhat improved fairways, but not enough to avoid hitting off packed dirt on numerous par-4, 5 holes (nothing new for east bay this year). The greens were in excellent condition and pin placement was especially tough, forcing many putts from above the hole with sharp breaks. Course layout has much elevation change, especially the back nine, so I strongly recommend riding a cart . Great combination of long/short par-3s, with numerous par-4,5s requiring carries over barrancas with careful club selection. No two holes play the same, each challenging and fun to play. Shot distance control is important on many shots and it is great that the carts are equipped with GPS and monitors. Highly recommend the course, although pace of play on the weekends can be brutal.
Fun Day
Great day on the course. Really liked it but a tournament slowed us down.
Great Golf Course any day
One of my favorite courses. The woman at the golf shop was excellent. Very welcoming and helpful. Pace of play was bad as there were some slow players walking the course. The dark haired woman at the food counter needs to find a friendly and inviting personality. Seems miserable. Soda was watered down too. Course was in good shape.
Still a great place to play.
Desperately need to improve the pace of play
Weekday 10:20am start with 3 people and the round took 5 hours and 10 minutes. The problem is 8 minute gap between tee times and marshal not enforcing pace of play. By the 4th hole, there were 4 teams on that hole and the marshal just drove by and did nothing to improve the pace.
If you enjoy 5 hour plus round, try this course.
Good value close to home
My wife and I have played three rounds in the last two weeks. We find the course to be in above average condition considering the drought. Staff friendly and helpful and pace of play acceptable.
Course has enough twist and turns to keep it interesting and elevation changes add a bit of difficulty.
needs attention
Course was good but the greens need alot more time to get back to being good. Very bumpy not worth playing now
Aeration-Poor Greens
The greens were recently aerated and appeared to not have been mowed or rolled for several days. Information about this condition was not provided in advance through Golf Now or when checking in at the pro shop counter. Typically the greens are good, but poor communications by Golf Now and the staff resulted in a unsatisfactory experience.
Excellent Course
What an incredible discovery. This was my first time playing Callippe and I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Even with the severe California drought, the course was in great condition. The layout, especially the back nine, makes for a challenging and fun 18 holes.
For the money, you won't find a better course. The weekends are discounted due to green aeration, but surprisingly, the greens are not negatively impacted.
I will definitely be playing this course again...and again.
Poor pace
Very disappointed in the pace of play. Marshall sent us to play the first nine versus the back nine. Not very good to not play the full course for the fees paid.
Yet Another Course Nestled in the Hills
I decided to play this course because our entire family wanted to spend a day in the area, so I thought that I might as well play golf. I had to play early in the morning, so the rate was around $80, but normally I would wait until after 1 PM, where Youth on Course is $5, a HUGE deal.
The entire course I would say is in pretty good condition, but not the best. It seems as is they are not managing their water usage the best, as the rough next to the tee was in better condition than parts of the fairway. The greens were pretty soft, one example being when I nearly landed the ball in the hole on nine and spun it all the way off the green. The greens were also quite fast, especially on downhill putts, which can really get away from you if you are not careful.
The entire course is set in a valley, nestled back in the hills, so you can't really see the highway. The front nine wanders around through the bottom of the valley, where there is not a whole lot of elevation change. The back nine, however, goes around the side of the valley, and there is a ton of elevation change. A previous favorite hole of mine, which is still one of my favorites, is #15. It is a short and downhill par five. I was able to hit a great drive and get very lucky with how it bounced down the hill, and I only had a 5-iron in to the water-protected green. Apart from that hole, there doesn't really seem to be any other significant hole. There is just one really good hole and 17 other ones that do nothing too special, but are still interesting and don't do anything wrong either.
The food is some of the best I have ever had at a golf course, and the entire staff was very nice. Unlike other courses like Cinnabar Hills that use the same cart system where everything is mapped and you can call for a marshal, they still have marshals roaming the course and keeping track of things, which is a huge help. All in all, this is a really great facility, as the food is great, the staff is very nice, the course is a blast to play, and the views are incredible. Unfortunately, my phone stopped working halfway through the round.
Decent but not great
First off, I would play again. The main 2 reasons for my low rating are pace of play and course conditions. The severe drought has not been kind to this course. However I do feel they're losing parts of fairways that they shouldn't. Also, the pace of play was pretty poor. Just over 5 hour round. No marshal at tee caused confusion with groups teeing off and pairing up on own. And no marshal on course to keep play moving. Also 2 separate groups behind us hit into us. The first group did it twice while we were just a couple steps off the green. The second group teed off on a par 3 while we were still putting.
Course has some interesting holes
Course played much tougher on back nine especially for first time players. Greens had a lot of breaks in them and were challenging to read. Beautiful scenery and deer/wild turkey come close and pay no attention to golfers.
Beautiful Course
Such a beautiful course! Considering the drought, this has been by far the best condition course I've played in the east bay. A few areas in the fairways were being worked on, but other than that, amazing condition.
The course isn't overly difficult, but when the wind is blowing, it can quickly become challenging. I loved how all the bunkers are placed exactly where the wind will push your ball. Definitely requires some thought before each shot. Also, greens were very fast.
I had a great time, and absolutely will play here again.
