The two courses need major repairs to bunkers, fairways and tee boxes
Played in a two-day tournament at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard, CA. While I think the staff are nice and friendly and the pace of play was not too bad for tournament playing, there were some significant problems with the course. First, the driving range is probably the worst in the area. We were hitting on very worn mats, balls need replacing, and you hit into what appears to be a movie set for WWI trenches and bunkering. Tee boxes were very thin and many dried or overused portions. Fairways were inconsistent. However, the poorest conditions were the bunkers. Unfortunately, I hit into many on the two day tourney and they were, simply, terrible. This course is minutes from the beach and yet sand was sparse. We are in the middle of summer yet many were full of mud. Not standing water but mud and wet. While I do not consider myself a bunker whiz, I had so many shots where my club skipped through the ball because there was 1/4 inch of sand on the bottom. At the least, they should take a machine and groom each bunker. It’s embarrassingly bad. Workers caring for the course conditions simply have no pride. While everyone should rake after their shots, there were so many footprints and divots in the sand it was just frustrating. Whoever is maintaining the grounds is definitely not taking care of the bunkers. I will leave it on this point. Unless I had to play in a tournament there, I would not waste my money. Los Robles Greens, Rustic Canyon, Moorpark Country Club are all nearby courses that place the conditions of this course near the bottom. Maybe Camarillo Springs has worse conditions but that is becoming a toss up.
Best bargain in the area
For the money RR cannot be beat in this area. The back nine on both courses is interesting and challenging and the course is generally in good shape (nice greens this time, although hole placement was questionable). Friendly staff, nice snack bar, and above average warm up facilities.
5.50 am tee, Sunday 6/25 at river ridge vineyard course
Course was in very good condition. Tee boxes are a little rough here and there but overall, the course is in its best shape in 3 years. Water/ rain is amazing!!
Greens had just been rolled and were very flat and smooth. A great morning. 3 hours 45 min to walk the course with two others.
Staff is accommodating
Greens are well maintained
Price is fair
Pace of play is not marshaled like it used to be.
Bunkers need sand now!
Over all riverridge is a nice course for the money.
Worth every penny
The course was in great shape and the pace of play was fantastic for a holiday.
Oxnard GEM
Victoria Lakes & Vineyard are excellent tracks in Ventura County. One setback is new wave of Covid Golfers slowing pace of play.
Good time on course. Starter was very helpful and friendly. Slight back up a few times but got thru in 4:30. Conditions were ok with some dry patches but greens in good condition
Disappointed
Played Victoria Lakes at River Ridge several times. Has always been decent, except this time was a major disappointment. Drove over an hour to get there and the greens were unmanageable. Hadn’t been cut or rolled. So bumpy and unevenly grown that the ball couldn’t hold a line even if you hammered it. So poor we had to call off our normal skins bet. Wouldn’t make it back unless the manager reached out and confirms they fixed it.
American golf does it again!
Just pathetic conditions since American golf took over, hold 14-18 weren’t as bad but this used to be such a nice course. Thanks again American golf!
Grass. We don’t need no stinking grass
The only green on the course is the overgrown weeds. The bunkers are solid rock and haven’t seen a racking in years
They take your money but don’t give you much in return
Backup option
The River Ridge courses have gone downhill considerably since American Golf took over management. The greens used to be fast and true. That said, the courses are a good backup option if other local courses are booked up.
Conditions Improving
Played the Vineyard 5/26. Conditions have improved recently. They are finally getting through the mowing and the fairways are better - actually delineated from the rough, and the turf seems to have improved. The grass on the greens is also improved. They are not as splotchy and bumpy, although still very slow. Looks like the grass health is coming around after a rough winter. The traps are still a wasteland. In general course conditions are significantly better than a month ago.
