Great but...
I do very much enjoy playing this course it’s fairly easy with beautiful greens however they need to do more about bathrooms and hygiene. There is only one out house on the entire course the whole entire back nine has no bathrooms which is great if you’re a man I suppose. however even in the bathrooms that are at the clubhouse there is no soap I’m not sure what the deal is but it’s one of those things where it can make a course kind of not as desirable to play as others
Overall I would still recommend the course to play as I said the maintenance of the course itself is very well-kept it’s good for beginners and for better players definitely will come back but I think there needs to be something done about the bathrooms and the lack of sanitation.
Clear day with good winter sunshine and a little breeze tat made chilly.
Good day for a round of golf in a chilly winter day at 51 degrees at 2 o’clock that made the game extra challenging. Pace of the play was not very good due to overbooked players. Some players, most of them appeared to be out-of-towners, we’re unruly and noisy.
Fairways are narrow, some bunkers are filled with water and there were quite a few unrepaired divots on the greens. Otherwise the course seems to be in good condition relatively. Need to come back when the weather gets better.
Fast round, good value
Every course I’ve played in the Sacramento area the last couple months looks a little rough, and RO is no exception. Bunkers are rather hard, lots of yellow grass on the fairways, etc. The greens, however, are in good shape and still running surprisingly fast considering recent rains. It doesn’t look great, but is very playable.
Whenever I’ve played here it’s been fast and today was no exception - under 4 hours for the round. It’s a very walker-friendly course, which is a big bonus in my mind, and it’s probably the best bang for your buck for weekend golf in this area.
Needs a lot of work
I haven't played this course since it was Rio La Paz. After playing it as River Oaks, I can see why I haven't played here for quite some time.
Driving Range - very expensive. A small bucket of 35 balls was $7. Even though we hit from the ground, it was all dirt, very little grass. 2 stars out of 5
Tee boxes - horrible condition. You would be hard pressed to find a level spot on the tee boxes. If you did find something to hit from, there was a good chance that there was a hole right under where your foot stood. 2 stars out of 5
Fairways - overall, not too bad but a there was a lot of wetness on the ground. The fairways were mowed. 4 stars out of 5
Greens - mediocre at best - Almost every green had bad areas that need to be cut out and replaced with grass. Twice I had a shot land in one of these bad areas and saw it bounce in some other direction. Very disappointed. 2 stars out of 5.
Layout - I usually play white tees however I found that a majority of the par 4's were 325 or less from the whites. Also one hole we almost got hit by a ball from the group behind us because blind hill in front of the tee box. 2 stars out of 5
Overall, I was disappointed with River Oaks. I will probably not come here. Also for some reason, there were a lot of flies everywhere.
Fun time
Everyone at RO is friendly and attentive. Always a pleasure to play here.
Watch the tee boxes
Overall, this is a enjoyable course to play with a diverse set of holes which are well-designed and can fool you into aiming in the wrong places if you’re not careful. Good value for the money, very walkable, seems to move along fairly quickly.
Right now, the conditions aren’t the best, but not bad. My only real complaint about the course would be the tee boxes, specifically that the majority of them are crowned, so it’s not always easy to find a flat lie.
Nice firm quick greens
Greens were in great shape for post-summer conditions--firm, quick and smooth. Tee areas need to be mowed lower and rather rough. Fairways in very good shape. Rough on sides of fairways makes the course play much longer. Like to see a garbage can on each tee--I only saw one or two on the entire course. I didn't see a restroom on the course--only at the clubhouse. Pace of play is a hit-or-miss. I got lucky and teed off before several very slow groups. No marshalls on the course.
Great condition and very fun layout. My only negative was there were no yardage markers on the course.
