TPC Harding Park ranks among the most famous municipal courses in the country, along with Torrey Pines South and Bethpage Black. TPC Harding Park, which is part of the San Franciso Recreation and Parks Department, hugs the shores of Lake Merced in close proximity to the Lake Merced Golf Club, The Olympic Club and San Francisco Golf Club. Dating to 1925, it has a long history of tournament golf among its stately Monterey Cypress trees. Byron Nelson won back-to-back San Francisco Opens in 1944-45. The PGA Tour's Lucky International in the 1960s attracted winners such as Gary Player (1961), Gene Littler (1962), Jackie Burke Jr. (1963), Ken Venturi (1966) and Billy Casper (1968).

After falling on hard times, the course received a $16-million renovation in 2002-03 that brought it back into the tournament fold, hosting the 2005 World Golf Championship-American Express Championship, the 2015 WGC-Match Play Championship, The Presidents Cup in 2009, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship from 2010-12 and the 2020 PGA Championship, its first major.

Nice Course - Not worth it for me at all

I got into a short texting battle with a friend about being unhappy with this course, so it's a controversial stance that I have.

Overall the course was in very good condition based on these observations: The fairways were very nicely mowed with a consistent height, however there were quite a few divots that weren't filled. The rough was lush and overall very few spots on the course seemed to be hurting for moisture or lacking grass. The rough however is what makes this course extremely difficult, and that coupled with narrow fairways and tall trees means GIRs are hard to come by. Tee boxes were in great condition and flat.

My biggest issue is with the greens. They are purposely kept slow because of the general amount of traffic the course sees, which I heard from locals that frequent the course regularly and the starter who obviously is there all the time.. This just kills the game for me since putting is such a big part of the scoring process. So even if you do manage to somehow get on the green from the rough, you're likely to 3 putt. It's just so difficult to read the speed, and many greens are inconsistent so the same putt you had on the previous green might fly by because it's faster.

The second big issue for me is that I really can only recall 4-5 holes vividly and that just makes for boring golf. The course is flat and the test is whether or not you can hit the ball dead straight onto a narrow fairway. That's all... The rough is basically a stroke penalty which is fine, but couple that with slow greens and a sterile layout, I just don't see a reason for me to drive an hour to the city, then 2 hours back home.

For a local with a resident card, I'm sure it's a great deal and can help your driving and iron game. But for a non-local it's simply overpriced and far less enjoyable than so many courses in the bay area that have true character and still provide a challenge with good course conditions. Also, their range with toptracer cameras is great!

TPC Harding

I’ve spent many rounds playing public and private courses. But just say, TPC Harding might be the best public course in California. The layout was terrific, the views breathtaking and conditions were wonderful.

Since there had been so much rain the last few week, the rough was as if we were playing in a US Open. Had to keep the ball in the fairways. Greens roll wonderfully and were well maintained.

There were a few bunkers that were under repair but stayed away from those.

Love the track and with a SF resident card best round for the money I’ve spent in years.

Heading back next week for sure!

Fantastic w GolfNow

Paid $86pp. The hot deal usually pops out 15 min after midnight 7-8 days before and they go real quick. They trimmed the thought down a bit so i had a less terrible shot. Bunkers are packed underneath w loose sand on top. It should be easier to hit out for some since it’s not overly fluffy. It’s challenging and you could still lose your ball easily in the rough. Glad I had 3 ppl helping to look. Cad path only rule was in effect which did not help but our group is super fast. We finished the round in 4 hour 10 mins. Could have been quicker if the group in the front moves faster. Will come back to play again when we visit!

Nice conditions except for the greens were aerated and were very bumpy and slow. No warning when tee time was made. We got stuck behind a 4 some for about 13 holes. The group was holding up a few groups behind. Marshall should have asked them to speed up or let groups pass.

Best course in the Bay

This place speaks for itself. Rounds later in the day when you can get out there by yourself or pair with another single are some of the most peaceful rounds I’ve ever played. Hot Deal rates are always worth it here.

First time. Big fan.

This was my first time on the course, got to check this off my bucket list, I’ve been wanting to play it since I watched the PGA on TV. Really great layout, great conditions overall. Friendly staff and great halfway house with all the snacks you could want. Try the breakfast burrito, it was huge and delicious.

The course needs work.

For a TPC course it's not up to standards. Over priced for this TPC course.

Great course

The only thing that bugs me is that there is no reason to rent a cart because it’s cart path only and it is more walking doing that then just bringing push cart. It’s always that way so just know that when playing Harding Park. Beautiful though best public course in Northern California

In need of some TLC

Going to Harding Park to play the TPC is always a thrill. The fact that is has hosted some major tournaments now and has such a wonderful golf history makes it a special day. The course right now is in disrepair. The sand traps are hard pack, barely any sand in them and there is now grass growing in some of the fairway bunkers. The greens are a mess now and they have now ariated and sanded them. That's the first step to getting them back in shape. The rough is so thick that it looks like it hasn't been groomed or attended to in quite some time - easily 5-6" of gnarly stuff making it very tough to recover. US Open Level for sure! The fairways are ok and they are reshaping/reworking green side bunkers on 10 and 14. Look, the bones are all there to bring this track right back to were it was when Colin won there a few years ago. It just needs a BIG dose of TLC - PLEASE!! They did lower rates to 1/2 price @$75 weekdays on Golf Now, but right now, I think that's even a little too much.

Harding

Everything was great. The only criticism is that they should let you drive the cart on the fairway. If you are going to play here, rent the push cart instead.

Nice course but far from a typical PGA course

I live close to Harding but don’t play the course much. The Bay Area is blessed with many golf courses to choose from. While Harding is nice, the course isn’t very challenging and the conditions of the greens was appalling as were some bunkers. The fairways were nearly manicured while the rough was penalizing.
