TPC Harding Park ranks among the most famous municipal courses in the country, along with Torrey Pines South and Bethpage Black. TPC Harding Park, which is part of the San Franciso Recreation and Parks Department, hugs the shores of Lake Merced in close proximity to the Lake Merced Golf Club, The Olympic Club and San Francisco Golf Club. Dating to 1925, it has a long history of tournament golf among its stately Monterey Cypress trees. Byron Nelson won back-to-back San Francisco Opens in 1944-45. The PGA Tour's Lucky International in the 1960s attracted winners such as Gary Player (1961), Gene Littler (1962), Jackie Burke Jr. (1963), Ken Venturi (1966) and Billy Casper (1968).

After falling on hard times, the course received a $16-million renovation in 2002-03 that brought it back into the tournament fold, hosting the 2005 World Golf Championship-American Express Championship, the 2015 WGC-Match Play Championship, The Presidents Cup in 2009, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship from 2010-12 and the 2020 PGA Championship, its first major.

In need of some TLC

Going to Harding Park to play the TPC is always a thrill. The fact that is has hosted some major tournaments now and has such a wonderful golf history makes it a special day. The course right now is in disrepair. The sand traps are hard pack, barely any sand in them and there is now grass growing in some of the fairway bunkers. The greens are a mess now and they have now ariated and sanded them. That's the first step to getting them back in shape. The rough is so thick that it looks like it hasn't been groomed or attended to in quite some time - easily 5-6" of gnarly stuff making it very tough to recover. US Open Level for sure! The fairways are ok and they are reshaping/reworking green side bunkers on 10 and 14. Look, the bones are all there to bring this track right back to were it was when Colin won there a few years ago. It just needs a BIG dose of TLC - PLEASE!! They did lower rates to 1/2 price @$75 weekdays on Golf Now, but right now, I think that's even a little too much.

Harding

Everything was great. The only criticism is that they should let you drive the cart on the fairway. If you are going to play here, rent the push cart instead.

Nice course but far from a typical PGA course

I live close to Harding but don’t play the course much. The Bay Area is blessed with many golf courses to choose from. While Harding is nice, the course isn’t very challenging and the conditions of the greens was appalling as were some bunkers. The fairways were nearly manicured while the rough was penalizing.

Overplayed and okay layout

For how much you have to pay, the condition is just okay.

Greens are super slow with a lot of ball marks. Patchy fairways here and there. No sand in bunkers. Classic overplayed Muni where they somehow hosted a major tournament. Don’t even compare this to Torrey Pines or any other TPC courses. There are 4 holes in the front 9 that look identical without much inspiration.

I play here regularly with the resident rate and would never play here for a dime more than $90 (or for a advance booking fee) For those of you who pay $130-200, you will be seriously disappointed. There are way better courses with better value around the area - half moon bay, presidio, wente - just to name a few.

Historic, not what I would expect from a TPC venue

Need drink holders in the pull cart. Clubhouse was in poor shape. Can easily see how tough the course is and the history behind it. But greens were like shag carpet. Didn’t putt true once.

Low Expectations

I originally had high expectations coming to play this course on a last minute decision.I have previous experience in the golf industry in the Monterey Bay Area as pro shop staff. The staff at this course facility were awesome. The clubhouse facility was quoted dated unfortunately. The golf course was my major gripe. The greens were the slowest type I had ever played. The rough was torrential to say the least.Too much time spent looking for any players ball.Too much time spent putting on slow greens. The course layout is great..the format of the course turf conditions was not to my liking. which seemed to be suited to high volume play expectancy..For such a storied course my expectations were definitely not met and I am hopeful to a return of upstanding for this great course layout and it’s facilities.

Stay out of the rough

Great course, slow greens, but amazing layout. Rough is tall and very punishing if you miss.

An overrated golf course

As a non resident you pay at least 3 times the resident fees. This the way that the municipaly welcome visitors Being a TPC you expect that the golf course will be top shape. All greens where at different speed with spot of different grass. Fairway where with brunch of dry cut grass everywhere with spot of no grass ans also with different type of grass in the fairway.

At 180$ it is much payfor this quality of play. It is the same situation with Torrey Pines 45$ vs 265$. Never again I will pay non resident fees with this huge difference.

Played Harding Park on the 4th of July, 12pm tee time. 3rd time playing this course and the conditions were the worst this time out of the 3 times I’ve played here. The tee boxes were very good but the fairways had some bizarre bare spots, not many but enough to be noticeable for sure, and the greens looked good but were almost “sticky” which obviously made them slower. The winds were not bad at all for Harding Park, picked to maybe 10mph at most. The layout is nice with the front nine going back and forth in the middle and the back nine going around the entire property. The fairways look wide but there is A LOT of rough on the sides and the actual fairways are narrow and hard to hit. Played from the Blue tees and I like to cut the ball which was difficult on some tee boxes with tree overhanging. The driving range is a little small (only 220 to the net) and not very wide, it’s also only mats, no real grass, the putting and chipping area is nice though. Overall I would recommend this course if you can get a deal on the price, the regular price seems a little steep to me, especially in the conditions right now.

Pace of play was horrendous. No marshaling. Groups in front hitting multiple tee shots and spending 10 minutes on the greens. The fairways were cracked and patchy. Unacceptable for such a high price

Surprised... to say the least

I reside in Chicago and during my time in San Francisco for work, I wanted to check out TPC Harding Park. Would have LOVED to take a right turn at Olympic Club on way to TPC Harding. Nonetheless... was very surprised to see the conditions the way they were, especially with hosting the PGA Championship in 2020. Pace of play was great, which was nice. Greens were running at an 8 or 9, which were brutal.... Fairways seemed to have disease and bunkers had grass growing in them. Very disappointed playing TPC Harding Park and expected A LOT more, especially for the money. I am a non-resident, so I wasn't surprised with the fee they charge. Other thing that was a shocker was them telling to not leave any valuables in your car because of theft. Not used to hearing that when you pull to a golf course paying $150+. But hey.. it is the Bay Area. Scenery was beautiful and I'd suggest playing once, and only once, just for the name recognition.

Good value for money if you can get it under $100

Course itself is fantastic, apart from the odd bare patch from what I presume is some sort of grass disease they course is in fantastic condition. The greens were slower than expected for a PGA major venue but still rolled just as good. For some reason even though the course is pretty wide they have made the fairways extra skinny so you have to really be precise off the tee. The rough is not stupid crazy long but it’s punishing at times which makes it a good challenge.

If you can get a good deal on this course for under $80 you will feel like you’ve grabbed yourself a bargain but anything over $100 I feel you might be a little disappointed. Keep an eye out for those deals as you will thoroughly enjoy this track!
