Good Value Golf Course
Good value golf course place in the Bay area / Peninsula; friendly staff and relatively well manicured course plus great cart (Yamaha!)
Nice public course
Po[lar Creek is a nice, well kept public course. It is a little short, but very playable
I purchased the round as a hot deal on golfnow so I'm not too upset about this but the course really doesn't seem to care about pace of play or customer experience if you're not a regular. It's just not a concern in the pro shop for random singles like me. They let my group tee off early while I was grabbing a beer in the restaurant so I didn't tee off at my time and instead got stuck behind a 4some of elderly women and men who were extremely slow (presumably why my first group went before them) which is normal on a Wednesday afternoon I guess, but on the second hole they split into two twosomes, and didn't me play through. There were zero marshalls on the course to help with situations like these. After waiting for 10-15 min on each shot I knew that this was going to be the worst slog ever, but I wasn't mad because I assumed they could offer a rain check and I could comeback another time when it wasn't so slow, so after the 5th hole I told the pro shop about the situation. They just stared at me blankly and said it's "not their policy" to offer rainchecks and that rounds will take 4-4.5 hours. Fine guys. I get it's a business but I know a 5 hour round when I see it. It would have been so easy to just give me a spot later in the week. This course and management do a lot for junior golf in the area and I know they're not complete jerks, but this wasn't how I expected the day to turn out, so I abandoned the round to go play at a different course.
The greens looked good though. Rolled better than I remember in the past. The restaurant and beer selection are decent too. Just don't expect the staff to care much about your experience if you're a single golfer who carries your clubs. I know people don't read course reviews for these stories but I had to share. You're better off playing Metropolitan in San Leandro for the same price. And they will treat you better.
It was a perfect day to play a round. Getting to the golf course was tricky.
Perfect weather, well maintained course should have been a good experience. However, it took much time and effort to get to the golf course through winding mountain road, not to mention the traffic through the half dozen little cities. Enjoyed the game but I will not return here. There are just too many wonderful courses here in Sacramento and Roseville areas. Thanks anyway GolfNow.com.
Great Course for Mid-to-High Handicappers with Excellent Staff
Poplar Creek is a fun course for all. It is wide open and is forgiving for the occasional errant shot.
The Staff is friendly and very accommodating. They even allowed me to change my Tee-Time from afternoon to early AM and honored the Golfnow discount. Thanks
It's a fun course to play, with full rounds ranging from 3.5 Hours to 4.5 hours. It is the bay area so when the wind kicks up, which is often, remember to Club Up, Choke Down!
Enjoy.
Snack shack
I like playing in the morning @ 8:00 every time I get to the turn after the 9th I stop off a the food shack it's open but they never have hotdogs or hotlinks ready only premade sandwiches , I don't understand why they don't start making them when they first get there.
Poplar Playing Windy and Fast
The course is in good condition following months of rain. Greens and rough have been trimmed down and you'll find the putting surface much faster than has been the case over the winter. Nice that most of the wet spots have dried up and lost balls are not a concern.
We are getting lots of onshore flow which translates to increasing winds in the afternoon. Usually always a factor when playing on the northern peninsula
Wind Tunnel
The course has a nice layout and fairly well maintained. Some fairways have bare spots but not bad, except #15 has hugh bare spots on the fairways. Some Par 3 fairways are under maintained. #7 has been changed from a short Par 4 to a long Par 3. It is a straight forward course unless you play the black marker. It will be more challenging, specially playing the long Par 3s and long Par 4s in gutsy wind. Play in the morning if you can. The afternoon wind will blow your ball to the no man land. Have fun.
Another Round at Poplar Creek
Course is in pretty good shape. The typical late afternoon wind was in fine fashion and the pace of play was slower than usual. Thanks to GolfNow for a $29 price that included cart. We had a good time and would do the same deal again.
Poplar creek
This my home course so therefore I play it frequently. Nevertheless, I am critical of the course shape as follows:
1. Greens are bumpy due to the inferior
Job they did in aerating them.
2. Fairways have large patches of dirt. No grass, which is unacceptable. No excuse for that!
3 Green fees are high considering the condition of the course. Needs help!
Poplar is Poplar
Decent layout. Food shack is terrible and I haven't seen a food cart in years. Good course to try shots and get practice. Pace of play is SLOW.. Condition of the course is good enough. Greens are surprisingly in good shape, considering the recent weather..
The play was brutally slow. I picked up after 13 holes.
Easy lay out. Holes are straight up, straight back. No imagination from a design stand point.
Would NOT play there again.
Weekday Specials
I played this course the day after a Men's Club Tournament. The pins were located in "you must be kidding me" locations. The greens were running true and fast. ENJOYED IT.
The best thing, it only took 3.5 hours to complete the round. That would never happen on a weekend or busy summer day.
Worthy
This course is a good balance of challenging holes and short holes that give you options off the tee. Greens are in great shape from all the recent rains . Practice areas, putting greens and driving range in good shape for warming up and post round practice. Definitely a mid peninsula course worth visiting for a round of golf.
