Nice experience
Haven't played here before. Due to the afternoon breeze, it was a tougher course than anticipated. It was in nice condition. Staff was nice enough to let my wife's mom ride (her first time on a course). Thank You!
Overpriced, esp non-resident
Plenty of courses in better condition for the money in the Bay Area. It's a decent enough course, but $60+ on the weekend for a non-resident is ridiculous. Los Lagos, Tony Lema, and others are the same price or better and put Poplar Creek to shame.
Nice local vourse
Fun and flat. Very narrow but fair course. Given the drought the course is in good shape.
price is right
we played a round of golf for 29.00 including cart.
that is had to beat. and we did not have to drive two
hours to get there.. the course was in very condition.
the greens were very good shape.
Customer Service says it all!!
Not very friendly start at check in, and pushed us to start at the tenth hole. They have a summer league for a group of people, and they gave it priority over our tee time. That's how we felt, hope your experience beats ours.
Everything Average, Not Bad, but not Great
Overall my experience at the course was good. Most of the tee boxes were in good shape, though a few were beat up. Greens and fairways in pretty good shape, though I was impressed with the quality of the sand in the bunkers for the few I was in. Pace of play was relatively fast, but not many people on the course for a Sunday afternoon. I'd recommend to a friend, but the cost is a bit high for what you're getting. I put this as a $40 course with a cart. Practice facility was nice, but not allowed to hit your driver.
lots of doglegs
course played tuff in fairways lots of bare spots not marked as under repair, not all sand traps have are alike.because it's a muni greens are rarely rolled, but course fun to play
Great place to walk.
Great course to walk. It's flat but the wind keeps it challenging. Use GPS if you have it. There's a hidden creek on the back nine. The course is holding well considering the drought. Nothing tricky about the greens. Get your speed right and you're golden.
Very Playable Course
Poplar Creek is a nice course with enough to challenge even the better golfer.
A Well Kept Muni Course
Now that the driving range is completed and all 18 holed are open, I decided to try Poplar Creek again. The weather was good the day we played. It can be windy there, though. The pace of play was also very good. With the addition of the driving range, the routing of a few holes has changed. #16 went from being a challenging par 4 to a more playable par 5. Holes #2 and #3 continue to be difficult, especially being so early in the round.
For a muni course with all the play it gets and the drought, the staff keeps the course in good condition. It is worth playing.
Excellent public course
I enjoy playing this course. Me and my co workers play @ 12 times during the summer. We also play the fall league. Course is normally in great shape. The pro shop and the bar staff are always friendly which makes the experience the much more enjoyable. Food is ferry good as we always have a drink and food after our round.
Keep up the good work
Love this course
My home course :) Always play here................................
Breaking into the 90s at Poplar
I shot my lowest score of 92 and for me the round was the best I've played, consistently over 18 holes - I had two triple bogies, without which I could have had an 87/88 score. Considering the lack of rain, the course conditions were very good, although the greens seemed excessively slow and aerated, possibly in preparation for an even drier spring and summer... I got through the round in 4 hours, which was fast, especially considering my partners and I walked. In all, easily my best round and one I will remember for some time...
Poplar Creek...Popular...not so much
This track is going through some improvements (mainly the addition of a driving range) that I think actually detracts from the quality of the course...not really improving it. The real estate that is lost to the range makes for an odd re-routing of the course. Plus, you actually have to walk through the range to get from hole #6 to #7...awkward.
All in all the course is in decent shape; the fairways/greens are consistent for most of the course. Depending on the wind, it can be a really tough round if the wind picks up...otherwise, in calm conditions the course is pretty receptive.
My one complaint is that the clubhouse staff leaves much to be desired in the customer service department. They aren't rude, just always seem to be preoccupied with the previous nights festivities, if you get my meaning...
It might be just me, but when I put down my hard earned money, I expect to be the center of attention, at least for the amount of time it takes to run my card....I really don't appreciate having to wait for the night's re-canting to end...Just me venting...but I am sure others feel the same way.
Poplar Creek is on the lower end of my rotation, I will keep there until the guys behind the counter wake up. Kudos to the service/food staff at the 19th hole; they are always spot on helpful and attentive.
First Impresions of Playing Poplar Creek
I have passed by Poplar Creek on Hwy 101 many times...finally got my first chance to play. There are some dry spots and patches on fairways. The 18th fairway could be better maintained and more scenic, for a signature hole. The driving range was still under construction. Severe afternoon winds favored low drives. The only slow play was about a 10 minute wait to tee off the shorter 7th hole. Our foursome finished play in about 3-3/4 hours total, walking. Also, the on-course men's room is not well-maintained. The Pro Shop has a friendly staff, and the store is well-stocked with merchandise. Dominic's Restaurant vacated about 4 years ago...I missed their fine dining, but they still have one remaining Peninsula location at Oyster Point, plus catering for Peninsula Elks Lodges, I was told. In its place, the restaurant is now known simply as "Poplar" with "Happy Hour" food and bar service when I looked inside. ...it did not appear as vibrant as before. However, Poplar Creek is an excellent value with the GolfNow discount. I will come back for subsequent weekday afternoon play, in this modern facility.
Decent Course but has construction
We skipped holes 6,7 due to construction but other than that decent experience. Get ready for some wind as it gets windy. Pretty flat and easy golf course overall
Okay Course for a Practice Round
Being that Poplar is just that...Very Popular! I read an article that stated it was the most played golf course on the peninsula. Being that it is, the course is in okay shape. Brown spots in some areas, sand traps are actually medium soft dirt traps. They are putting a driving range on the facility so that you can practice prior to your tee time.
The course is flat and it is more of a practice round for me. I am a single digit handicap player and at that course I am trying different shots, low shots, cut shots, draw, etc. So the course is open and you can afford an errant shot or two or three. There are some fun challenging holes i.e. hole #2 needs a cut shot or else you're in the lake. Hole 3 is a long par 3 with water to the left.
The greens are bumpy and this is surprising with the amount of players they get...so you just have to deal with it.
Around 3 pm the wind kicks up and makes for challenging back nine...that's when its fun!
The only thing I don't particularly care for is the pace of play...which is snail pace slow. 5+ hr round which makes it tough to get a rhythm in the swing. I would much rather go somewhere else where pace of play is better, and a little more challenging than what this course offers, but if you don't mind the slow pace, it's an okay place to practice your new shots.
Soooooooo Sloooooooow!
5-1/2 hour rounds just aren't any fun, no matter the conditions. Impossible to get into any kind of rhythm when you have to wait on every tee shot and almost every approach. On all par 3s, there were at least two groups waiting on the tee, sometimes three - one of those in plain view of the clubhouse, but don't expect anyone there to do anything about it. The fairways and greens are in pretty good shape considering the drought, but that just can't make up for the death march it takes to get through it. Two employees behind the register were in a conversation when I checked in, I didn't get a "hello" or "thanks for coming out" or anything, but that's pretty much the norm everywhere so I can't hold that against them. I like the course overall but rounds that long are unacceptable.
wait until construction is done
two holes are closed during construction so they allow you to "add" a few holes when done.
pace of play is normally slow but crawls now.
very windy in the afternoon.
nice "feel good" course for practice
