Never again
The day started off bad and gradually got worse. We booked an 11:52am tee time and got bumped behind a slow five some. The front nine took three hours to play. The marshall was about as useful as an ashtray on a motorcycle. At around 4:15 we were told that carts must be returned in 15 minutes. We still had four holes to play. We were never informed of this policy. Never again.
Pace of play kills what's otherwise a great round
Tee times are so close together that there's usually multiple groups waiting on the 2nd tee. Front nine usually plays brutally slow, but you get used to it by the back.
Don't expect to finish in 5 hours or try and be anywhere after, or you're in for a very long day.
However conditions are usually great.
Poor conditions
Played today 10/21/18. First time in 2 years, what happened to this golf course? horrible conditions, from tee boxes, fairways and especially the greens. The snack bar at the turn had no food only drinks and peanuts. What happened to this place? will never play here again. My 3 golf buddy's felt the same way. Disappointing.
Good course
Poplar Creek is a good course. It has a very good layout although the condition of the course is mediocre. It is challenging .It is windy most times I have played.
Bumpy greens
Greens were not in very good shape, very bumpy and slow. 4.5 hours to finish on a Wednesday afternoon was a bit longer than I expected but wasn't too long. Fairways were in good shape which is why it was such a surprise to find the greens below average.
Super slow play 5+ hours
We waited at every hole. About 4 or 5 holes, there were multiple groups waiting. Excruciating slow play but nothing the marshal can do since there was no noticeable gap. This course is normally super slow on weekends so I expected it going in.
Poplar Creek
They did not honor the Golf Now rate and charged us for a cart and was pretty rude about it. I think Golf Now needs to contact this course and get this straightened out.
3.5 Hours for 9 holes.......no refund for poor management
Nothing like showing up for a tee time and teeing off +30 mins late. When we asked why the delay, the check in employee told us they had a 250 man tournament running......why in the world would you continue to take bookings if your course was full!?!
After 3.5 hours to complete 9 holes, I asked for a rain check for when they weren't so busy OR a refund for 50%. The employees wouldn't say anything other than "we don't do that".
Amazing how poor management can turn a decent course into a horrible experience. I'll be choosing a different course going forward.
Airplane lover's Eden
The course was in greatl condition with several challenging holes to offset several fairly easy ones. So there was something for every skill level. The price was definately right (cart included), and being on the flight path into SFO, airplane watching was a nice perk for those who enjoy sightseeing to offset any errant shots.
Course Okay but not a happy camper
Besides the greens being in good shape and the picturesque clubhouse and 18th hole, there was little to like about Poplar Creek.
The pro shop seems very unprofessional, for two reasons. The first, is there inability to keep the pace of play up, as was evident over my 5 1/2 hour round. The group in front of us consisted of two beginner golfer who where playing from the back and intermediate tees, when they should have been playing from much closer. Also, a joke of a golfer waited for a group to vacate the green of a 285 yard par 4, thinking he could hit it on with a 15 mph wind in his face. These things where obvious and seen by one of the pro shop employees multiple times as he made his marshal rounds.
Secondly, they did not honor the rate we paid for through Golf Now. It was a Hot Deal tee time, which said it included a golf cart, but upon checking in, the guy said it was a walking only rate, because they recently stopped including carts with the hot deals because they where "loosing money". We had to pay an additional $34 on top of the $85 steal... I would have believed it was my mistake, if our playing partners hadn't had the same experience. THIS WAS A SCAM. Poplar Creek should honor the agreed upon rate and Golf Now should be more vigilant of their course partners participation in their reservation system.
The collusion of this rip-off, paired with this unexciting dog-track of a course is extremely upsetting. This course, which is in a great location right on the bay, should be much nicer, but also very ashamed of their business practices. A $34 refund for us and our playing partners is the only decent action that would not necessitate anyone from reading this review to boycott Poplar Creek.
good course in fair condition
Poplar Creek is a good course in reasonably good condition. The layout is good . The staff is very accommodating and friendly..
Poplar Creek
A reasonable municipal course. Not extremely difficult. In fairly good condition
Nice course, flat but always wind to make it a test
Relative short course with an layout that makes it easy to find your ball as it is pretty wide open. Always some wind to lots of wind that adds a challenge to this fairly flat course. It is directly south of the San Francisco International Airport so you can check the weather for the airport to get a good handle on what will be happening at the course.
My feel good course
Poplar is a great practice course. You don't lose too many balls. Slice and you will usually have a chance to recover. If you are a long hitter there are a number of drivable part fours. Really good bar and food.
Breezy Afternoon
Wind up as is most often the afternoons at Poplar. Green running well. Tee boxes and fairways dry and decent. A good walking value without a lot of distinction.
Short course, condition of course is improving, close to my home
Meet a lot of good people
