Back 9 was spectacular
Great parkland corse, somewhat wide to spray a bit. Really enjoyed my round.
This course has gone downhill
While on vacation in the Outer Banks, I played Kilmarlic with my friends twice. I had remembered this course as being one of the finest In the Outer Banks area. I'm just not impressed anymore. Many areas are burned out, making it much harder to hit your ball off of burned, hard ground. Most of the sand traps have either little or no sand in them, which is very annoying. Then there's the greens...really in mostly bad shape, with weeds and muddy areas, just not even close to befitting a top grade golf course. Now, if they charged a fair amount of money to play there, it would be different, but they are still wanting high tee time fees. Not likely I will be going back any time soon
Crabgrass growing in the greens, greens not in the best shape. No ball washers.Too much money per round and not enough ammenities.
Great Experience
Bag drop was well managed and friendly welcome. Starter was very helpful and professional. Tap Room 19 hole was over the top. Would recommend to anyone. Thanks!
Visually intimidating, fun, a little weird, odd routing
This is an interesting course and worth a play. Fairways were in fantastic condition, greens were hit-and-miss. Bunkers, not really all that good. Most holes look frightening off the tee and often so from the fairway: tall grasses, lurking hazards, bunkers, trees. However, it's not quite as hard as it looks, as the greens are huge and pretty accessible.
The weirdest thing about this course is the routing, which is affected by being laid out among bogs and subdivision plots. But the fact that the designer only designed two courses explains some of it, too--Nos. 2 and 11 are twin par 3's played side-by-side. Holes are spread far apart and it's hard to keep track of where you are on the course. For example, from 9th green you pass 5th tee, 4th green, the clubhouse, 1st tee, the driving range and finally you're on 10.
What's cool is all the holes pretty much stand alone. What's not so cool is there are a few too many risk/reward gimmicks, such as the C-shaped 12th short par 5, which actually plays shorter than the severe dogleg par 4 4th. Obviously, walking is pretty much out of the question.
Overall a good/fun challenge. Like many OBX courses, very expensive, but I played midday and not only was the price lower, but there were very few others on the course, making for a nice quick pace.
Amazing course layout, greens need work
Absolutely gorgeous course with awesome bunkering, ponds, and penalty areas. Challenging, but not too tough for almost all handicaps. Only downside was divots on fairways and really bad punctures on greens, they definitely need some work.
Good day
Staff is always friendly and helpful. Fairways were in good shape. The greens were recovering from maybe a disease, but weren’t bad. What made the greens role inconsistent is the lack of care fellow golfers take on repairing the pitch marks. The bunkers are in need of new sand and weeding. This might sound like a bad review and it’s not. The course is a good course to play. It just needs a little TLC.
Nice Course but the Greens Need Help
Overall, the course is very nice with some interesting holes. I’d have rated it higher but the greens were in mediocre shape, This is mostly because many players don’t repair their divot marks (we came across quite a few today with a relatively early tee time). This lack of courtesy and respect for the course has taken its toll on the greens. I’’d gladly play it again and hope the greens keepers can repair some of the damaged areas from today as well as days past.
Love this course
$125 is a little more than I like to pay, but we decided to do it and we were glad we did. Friendly staff, great conditions. Loved the layout. Greens were smooth and rolled true. Fairways were beautiful as were the tees. Very nice clubhouse and pro shop. Some of the bunkers need work but still playable. Will definitely play this gem again.
Nice course, terrible bunkers
Played the course during our beach trip. Course was in great condition, had a nice layout but pace of play and bunkers were terrible. Their website said a round should be 4 hours 15 minutes with a Marshal monitoring. But we’re wet on pace for a 4 hour 45 minute round. Constantly waiting on the group in front of us and no marshal. We had to skip the 18th hole because 1 in the group had to get back for a dinner reservation. For a course by the beach the bunkers were terrible. Some hard or muddy. Others with weeds and the faces not managed properly. A ball should not plug on the face.
Otherwise very pretty views and some wildlife. We would play again. Course is cheaper to book directly through course than even a hot deal on here.
Not worth it
Kilmarlic, like seemingly every other golf course in the OBX area, cost considerably more to play at $120. For that money, my expectations are to find a well maintained country club style course with fairways and greens in excellent condition, groomed bunkers, etc. Instead, we found what amounted to a municipal golf course with many of the greens in poor condition. What was worse, several of the hole locations were put directly in the areas where the greens weren't in good condition, Bottom line, Kilmarlic isn't worth your time or money.
Pretty good day - vacation golf
Great course, great challenge and glad they are getting relief from the rain. Great guy in the shop said 11 inches of rain in 3 days. We had some wet areas on cart path and 90 degree rule today but nothing that will ruin your day. Some under repair areas that we played free drop from, no biggy. Love that you hit driver on mostly every hole even the 2 or 3 extreme dogleg holes. Great par 3 and back 9 is fun with 3 par 3 and 3 par 5. Par 5 aren’t super long even on a wet day.
I can see why most prefer this place over any other in OBX. Awesome bridges on the back thru the woods. The Loblolly pine forest to be exact.
