Hole #8 - Par 5 - "Empire" Photo submitted by Shawn2245237 on 03/08/2013
Always a Treat
Always a treat to play Astoria, every staff member I encountered were very professional in their approach. Even the misty of and on rain did not spoil my play, the course was in great shape save for the construction which eliminated hole 16. Definitely a must play whenever I am in the Orlando area.
Challenging and beautiful
Playing from the back tees offers challenge to those that want that. The course plays well and is fun.
Disappointed
Played here for the first time in September 2020 and it was great. Course condition was awesome and staff was friendly which made the high green fee worth it. Have played maybe 10 times since and it has slowly gone downhill with pace of play issues and course condition. Played yesterday which was the first time since they “renovated” and it was so disappointing I had to write this review. In classic corporate America fashion they have completely destroyed the back 9 to squeeze out some more profits. It used to be a beautiful par 36. They have now decided to build a new ballroom/building on the back 9 which has destroyed 3 holes, and they are calling it a par 34, when in reality it’s a par 33. They took what used to be a par 5, stuck a green in the middle of the fairway, and call the first half of the par 5 a par 4, and the second half a par 3. To the eye it’s obvious what it used to be. 16 which used to be a beautiful par 3 is completely gone and now a large construction zone. The par 4 17th has also been shortened with construction behind it. The par 5 18th which used to be a nice finishing hole is also gone and has been replaced with a construction zone. The new 18th is the first half of the old 18th, dead straight 230 yards that they are calling a Par 4, but really should be a called a par 3 given the length. After the 18th you get to drive by a large construction zone on your way back to the clubhouse. There was also very little sand in the bunkers yesterday. The starters try to pitch the new back 9 as if it’s really great, but it’s terrible and an obvious attempt for Waldorf to increase profits, make the golfing experience worse, and still charge the very high green fees. Green and fairways were in good shape, front desk staff was friendly as always, but very disappointed to see the company destroy the course. Used to be my favorite course in the area to play when I was in town, after seeing the changes yesterday I won’t be back.
Outstanding Golf Course
This is one of the best courses I’ve played. The staff was very friendly and helpful and professional. They made me feel very comfortable and like they were happy I was playing golf there at their course. I will definitely go back there to play again soon. Thanks for a wonderful day.
Nice course but way overpriced
Good condition, small greens and some narrow fairways. Not a particularly memorable course and very pricey
Okay.
Good. - greens were in great shape, smooth and interesting contours.
Bad - lots of parallel holes. Construction for next two years causes modifications to course. Noise while putting in pilings. Rental clubs were brand new taylormades, but $100!
Overall - not horrible but there are better options nearby if you have easy transportation.
Hidden Gem
Nice layout, good pace of play, very friendly pro shop staff. Well maintained with friendly, attentive , respectful grounds crew - no attitude ! Will play it again.
Course is in Fantastic Shape
From tee to green course is in great shape. Cart girl was professional and around at the perfect time. A bit pricey but okay with a Hot Deal.
Great course and very friendly staff!
Best greens we've played while on vacation. The course is marked well and is very nicely maintained. The staff was extremely friendly.
Amazing Course. Nobody around!
Snow covered ground here in NJ, so I decided to fly down to Florida, alone, last minute on Saturday night to play Sunday, and get back to NJ Sunday night. Orginally wanted to play the Ritz Carlton course, but couldn't book singles on Golf Now. When I booked tee time the night before I could have played at anytime. The tee sheet was wide open. Arrived at the course. They have valet parking, so headed to the pro shop to pay and was on the practice range where my clubs were waiting for me within 5 min of arriving. Everyone was extremely nice. Warmed up for 35 min on the turf range, no mats. Then I took some putts and headed out. Starter was super friendly. I was blown away by the course conditions. It was playing par 70 due to construction on 18 that shortened the hole. No temporary green though, they built a proper green for the renovation. Looked like they were building a legit 18th hole. Over water, bridges, etc. The pace was amazing. Nobody in site. Cart girl was around 6 times. I give it 5 out of 5 for every aspect. Cant really think of any disappointments besides I didn't get to see any alligators. The course is very scoreable, as you would expect from a resort course. Can't wait to play it again!
Good course
I enjoyed my round at this course. It has a good layout and it was not crowded because it was a cooler day in January. I’m not sure if there’s renovations or not but the 18th hole is almost a joke as a 240 yard par four. The pro shop also seemed like it was not very stocked and was locked when I finish my round at 1 PM but it may be the time of the year or it may be renovations. Overall good experience but for the price was hoping for a little more.
Completely agree. A shame they ruined a spectacular course.
