The Golf Club at Rancho California

This round was my third round in 3 weeks. I've been playing golf for 59 years, I've been working in the industry for 40. The first time I played Rancho California was in 1990, the course was good enough for me to drive here several times from Costa Mesa. I played Rancho around 2008 and things were far different with much worse course conditions (I dented my 7 iron in the middle of the 13th fairway). So it has been over a decade since I tried Rancho, what a pleasant surprise! I have a couple suggestions, bulldoze every tee that isn't level and instead of only putting expensive white sand in less than half of the course, fill all the bunkers with a less expensive sand that is heavier, so it doesn't blue away... I'm playing again next Wednesday!

Rancho California is a demanding golf course. It has lots of elevation, water hazards and once they fill all the bunkers with the white sand that's in about 30% of them around the course, it'll be fairer. PLEASE FIX YOUR BALL MARK'S! The greens are lush, so everybody needs to repair then...

Especially liked that there was white fluffy sand in the greenside bunkers!!!

Only negative comment... at 19th hole apparently the cook had quit and there was no one to prepare our food order.

So, we had a couple of cold ones and left.

Overall, a good day.

Had not played this course for a few years, enjoyed the re-visit. Greens were in excellent condition, some of the rough was punitive, fairways were very good. Overall a nice outing.

Lots of the bunkers are being renovated with fresh sand and all which is great. Others while maintained are not nearly as playable and basically just groomed dirt.

Course was in generally good repair.

Course does see a wide range of playing abilities so keep that in mind as it might slow down your round a bit depending on who's in front of you. For instance, I'm pretty sure the group on 10 picked up my wayward ball from #9 tee when I played, even though they disavowed any of it.

Great place to play. excellent layout. Moderate difficulty. Great pacer of play. .

Certain patches of fairway were pretty sparse but not enough to really affect play. Greens stuck pretty well. Last played when it was SCGA more than 15 years ago and I remember then that the greens were hard af. Hardly anyone playing after 1pm. My foursome finished in just under 4 hours. Only complaint was a slow twosome in front of us. Nothing that a few early drives didn't take care of.

The fairways and greens were very nice. One thing that stood out was their white sand traps around greens. The sand was fluffy which made easier to play. Most other courses the sand is hard like compressed dirt, which is hard to play. I recommend this course

Great layout maintenance on the bunkers in progress

The Marshall was buddy buddy with 1st off, that tee’d off at 545, After calling in 2x in front 9 to speed them up he only came out one time and waved and didn’t say anything. We teed off just after 600 and got to #10 at 9:07. After finishing #10 we waited behind 2 groups on 11. When we finished 11, the lead group was still on tee box on 12. We jumped in front of 3 groups on 12 tee box and jumped straight to 13. Our 3 some finished at 1053. We waited and watched the lead group finish at 11:11.

If you cant finish a round under 4 hours you shouldn’t be setting up a tee time first off in the morning, Tell me I’m wrong!!! We won’t be back anytime soon!!!

The course was challenging lots of hazards throughout the course ravines, water on some holes left and right with bunkers placed in areas that make it hard to play it safe . The front and back bunkers closer to the club house have that pebble beach sand very fluffy the bunkers all in between are hard dry sand/dirt the greens were very well taken care fairways and tee boxes were in good shape . Overall had a Greta time and would go back to this course especially in the winter months where she isn't as necessary.

Very pleased and surprised by this course it was challenging the entire round up hills , in between water , ravines before holes , some of the greens had steep drop offs . The condition of the course was solid the greens well maintained and the bunkers closest to the club house front and back 9 have that fluffy white sand you see at Pebble however there are bunkers all in-between that are like pavement stay out of those and you'll be fine. Overall had a great time on this course would recommend playing a round here to anyone.

This us a very good course with excellent greens, tees and bunkers. The faurways are playable but hit and miss regarding tyrf conditions. The range is great and there is a small restaurant/snack bar. Carts are good with no GPS. A good value gor the money! Dave in the pro shop was great as well as other staff members.
