The Golf Club at Rancho California

I was visiting from out of town and found this course by sheer luck. I picked it because it was designed by Robert Trent Jones. This course was in very good shape fairways and greens were outstanding for a public course. Many of the bunkers were just redone. A few need to be redone still. That was the only drawback. I’ve played many RTJ courses around the country and this one did not disappoint. Every hole was unique in its own way. If I get back to the area, I will be sure to play this course again. The driving range needs help. It could use some seed and water. The balls I hit were a thousand years old.

This time of year, all of the golf course are being aerated, it's a necessity. Rancho California punched on 10/25-26, they are almost playable again. I didn't expect them to be this good, so soon, but I'm glad the greens will be 100% sooner than later. I noticed that they filled a few more bunkers with pretty white sand, I just wish their were more golfers that cleaned up after themselves and raked them. Ball marks too!

This course remains one of my favorites. I enjoy trying to overcome any challenges or obstacles that may have befallen me during a prior round.

Rancho California was in very good condition on the day before aeration on the 25th. My only complaint was the big globs of cut rough that caused me two lost balls. I played by myself at my own pace on an idyllic Sunday afternoon, I'll be back in three weeks, for sure!

Can't complain about the current green fees...pretty fair. Need improvement on starting the groups and keeping the groups spaced out. Some dead spots on certain fairways need attention. PEOPLE...fix your divots on the green. Other than a few minor things, this is still a great track to play...please don't let things slip any further.

Pace of play was perfect, greens and fairways, bunkers were excellent, layout was fantastic and challenging. Staff helpful and friendly. Drove an hour to get there and wasn’t disappointed. So many public and semi public courses should care as much here in SoCal before charging/ gouging for their rates for conditions not even half as good as Rancho California. This golf club is a good blueprint on how to value and care for patrons. Thank you all at Rancho!

The greens were in the best condition of the 4 weeks in a row that I've played here recently. I played at 7:35 each day and the greens were soggy until today's round, when they were nice and firm. The rest of the course was in good shape also, except for half of the bunkers being dirt clay without any sand. I played the White tee boxes, with many of them needing to be leveled and resodded. I Everything else in the course is better than good. At this price point, a great golf course!

Played the course four years ago, it was in terrible condition. The greens were a little spongy, the rest of the course is in excellent condition.

This round was my third round in 3 weeks. I've been playing golf for 59 years, I've been working in the industry for 40. The first time I played Rancho California was in 1990, the course was good enough for me to drive here several times from Costa Mesa. I played Rancho around 2008 and things were far different with much worse course conditions (I dented my 7 iron in the middle of the 13th fairway). So it has been over a decade since I tried Rancho, what a pleasant surprise! I have a couple suggestions, bulldoze every tee that isn't level and instead of only putting expensive white sand in less than half of the course, fill all the bunkers with a less expensive sand that is heavier, so it doesn't blue away... I'm playing again next Wednesday!

Rancho California is a demanding golf course. It has lots of elevation, water hazards and once they fill all the bunkers with the white sand that's in about 30% of them around the course, it'll be fairer. PLEASE FIX YOUR BALL MARK'S! The greens are lush, so everybody needs to repair then...

Especially liked that there was white fluffy sand in the greenside bunkers!!!

Only negative comment... at 19th hole apparently the cook had quit and there was no one to prepare our food order.

So, we had a couple of cold ones and left.

Overall, a good day.

I would play this course again

Had not played this course for a few years, enjoyed the re-visit. Greens were in excellent condition, some of the rough was punitive, fairways were very good. Overall a nice outing.

Lots of the bunkers are being renovated with fresh sand and all which is great. Others while maintained are not nearly as playable and basically just groomed dirt.

Course was in generally good repair.

Course does see a wide range of playing abilities so keep that in mind as it might slow down your round a bit depending on who's in front of you. For instance, I'm pretty sure the group on 10 picked up my wayward ball from #9 tee when I played, even though they disavowed any of it.

Great place to play. excellent layout. Moderate difficulty. Great pacer of play. .

Certain patches of fairway were pretty sparse but not enough to really affect play. Greens stuck pretty well. Last played when it was SCGA more than 15 years ago and I remember then that the greens were hard af. Hardly anyone playing after 1pm. My foursome finished in just under 4 hours. Only complaint was a slow twosome in front of us. Nothing that a few early drives didn't take care of.
