Not very good
This course seems to have suffered from all the recent rain. There were quite a few boggy areas which led to plugged lies, soft conditions underfoot and large bare patches on fairways.
Given this is a council owned course with minimal maintenance it is hard to see the condition improving to a decent standard. I expect the course will veer from being very soft in wet weather to being rock hard in dry weather.
There are much better courses in the area to spend your hard earned money.
Great potential let down by very poor condition.
The layout, views, scenery are excellent. It is a tight course and not for the wayward hitter. Unfortunately the condition was very poor. The greens are like decent fairways, the fairways were ok. Tees boxes were overgrown as was all rough from 1st cut onwards. If you missed the fairways, which is easy on the tight sloping course, you had to spend too much time looking for your ball, even when a few feet off the fairway. We only saw one green keeper working with a small ride on mower and this is the issue. It needs more staff to help get on top of it so it can be kept and maintained to a good standard. When this happens I would happily return, until then, no chance.
Great course
Great course, friendly staff, some really challenging holes, and great value for money, couldn’t have asked for more! Will be back again!
Great value for money
To say the weather the last seven months the course is looking great, fairways great, greens true, the only thing they need to do now is cut the second cut
Course
Found off fairways was full of loose grass which made it difficult to find your ball
Great value in summer
Was disappointed.4 holes closed, lot of overgrown fairways...been previously and been very good
We could only play the first 9 holes twice through even though nothing was mentioned when I booked it 2 days prior. The fairways were at least 4” long and the leaf blower that was parked up must have been broken as it’s definitely not been used any time recently. Every group we spoke to complained about not being able to find fairway shots let alone shots into the rough. We walked off of the course after 7 holes.
You get what you pay for
The general course layout is decent, reasonable fairways, the rough is consistent and not too high. However the greens aren't in great shape, some are okay whilst others are struggling and a little patchy. And every single bunker may as well be GUR considering the lack of sand and weeds growing in them... but then for 15 pounds on a weekend, it's still a reasonable place to play on a budget.
Nice course but below average amenities
Nice course and layout, but the course should have definitely been closed on the day we played due to how wet it was. Had to give relief on 99% of shots as it was like a marshland which made it hard walking round. If we could have got our money back we wouldn’t have turned up.
The clubhouse (if you can call it that) is very much in need of a refurb. Was more like a working mans club, so don’t expect anything other than a John Smiths or Worthintons for a half way pint. Not the friendliest of staff either we found.
Despite all that though, we’d go again, when it’s more dry, as it’s nicely tucked away and there’s some scenic holes, which is ultimately what we go for.
Not too bad
For a municipal course it wasn't that bad, £18 for the weekend is a good price, that said the bunkers were terrible, full of stones, tees boxes were a bit tatty, and in a couple of greens there were tree roots coming through the surface.
Nice in Summer
I fancied a change of scenery from my local course and saw a bargain here- so assessed the course in summer compared to my last winter round- pleasantly surprised.
The tees were in good condition and of course due to the amount of rain this year should be. No practice putting green however, new grass and roped off.
There are many varied holes on this course set amongst the hills on the outskirts of Doncaster, take the 1st - downhill par 5 with a blind landing of your ball- hit towards the pole and find it when you walk, (despite a 3 ball setting off nearly 18 minutes before me they were still on the 1st Green, and after waiting for them to move along after there 2-3rd shot on the 2nd, I decided to move to the 4th- since they were not letting me play through- this was their game and their course- nice members not!).
So the 4th-7th holes are all parallel and consequently accurate -straight shots are required whilst playing these, I bet there are a few "fore" shots when it is busy lol.
Hole 8 is a long 200 yard par 3 with a McKenzie green- up hill approach- what a challenge to say the least!
9th downhill then back up hill is also a challenge.
10th back downhill with a dog leg-then onto their signature 11th, drive over a water ditch, dog leg right slight downhill then back uphill over a wall to the green- will take up many shots if you are not precise!
11th straightforward par 3 again with a slight McKenzie.
12th back to the same tee area as the 11th- slightly confusing 1st time you play - avoid the woods on the left and some trees on your approach.
13th an interesting Par 3- easy to lose your ball if you overshoot, miss the tree on the left and measure accurately-hey presto a par.
14th shorter par 4 but woods again on the left and a ditch far right- enjoyable, as is the 15th- then uphill to the 16th at the end of the course- interesting and do not overshoot=lost ball.
17th a long par 5, the bush on the right that used to catch every wayward ball has been removed- thanks, there is a long water-ditch running on this hole and I managed my first par.
Onto the return home 18th with out of bounds on the right and a water ditch around 200 yards from the tee-then back uphill.
Nearly all the greens were in great condition- no bobbles and fair pace- so well done on this-(have known them be quite bad- occasionally due to vandalism).
Given this experience I would not hesitate returning before Autumn
Cannot comment on the 19th- did not visit.
