Pace of play is so slow, greens are poor!
We had a Sunday afternoon tee time at 2.04. Tees off 20 minutes late due to a queue on the tee. Things did not improve we had to wait at every shot for the groups ahead. At one point 5 groups on the tee of the 8th. The round took 5.5 hours to complete as a 2 ball,.
The greens look like they have been in a drive by shooting. Never seen so many unrelated pitch marks! The 4 ball in front played from
Many bunkers and didn’t take them after they were done. The holes had damaged edges.
Practise facilities were very good, pro shop well stocked and friendly staff. Half way house was great too. An ice cream and an ice cold drink took out mind off the wait on 10!
Won’t be revisiting here any time soon, a lot better value for money available at any other Newbury course.
In to the Grove
Good day out to at a very challenging course.
We were made to feel very welcome as visitors.
The course was in good condition considering the weather.
Expect a long walk from certain greens to tees as the course is split by the A34 which you have to go over to play half a dozen holes. Not that I would let you put that off.
Would I go back - absolutely. I would like to play it again when conditions are much kinda and the weather is warmer.
Lovely course spoilt by no marshalling of pace of play
4 hours 45 minutes and we were a 2 ball. We could see 4 hole gap at least in front of a group 3 holes in front of us, no marshall came out. When we got back to the clubhouse it turned out to be a large group of friends who could barely play from what I was watching.
My advice play the course but check for societies before hand and ask for a marshall.
The course is good
The course is quite long and will recommend use of a buggy. It is also very challenging especially around the greens
Donnington
Fantastic course with friendly and welcoming staff.
Would definitely recommend and looking forward to returning for another round soon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Long Walk
Played for the first time and pleased with layout and course condition however the front 9 and some of the walks between tees are a real slog...you walk over a dual carriageway twice!!!
Good looking course but take a buggy if not up to the walk.
Challenging
Fantastic course. I play off 14 handicap but still found it very challenging (if not too challenging) for me. My partner (4 handicap) had no such problems.
A great parkland golf course
This is a great golf course with lots of course features that make it an excellent challenge to any golfer.
I played off the white tees which was about the maximum distance for my play and I must admit, I loved it. The course was in brilliant condition.
I hired a buggy which was definitely an advantage if you have any knee problems as the walk from green to tee can de quite a distance.
The greens are large and bunkers were well looked after, all in it was a fantastic days golf and will be going back again.
Lots of off course walking
Had a great round the course was in great condition. The only criticism is the amount of walking between certain holes
A long, but fair test of golf
The staff in the pro shop were helpful & welcoming. Course is in good condition overall, although the bunkers leave a lot to be desired and they also had a lot of stones in them. Greens were true, looked good but running a little slow. Overall a very enjoyable day out.
Not what it once was!
This used to be my favourite course to play. In fact I used to be a member. However after playing a round here this week I am sad to say that it really has gone down hill. Scruffy tee boxes, patchy fairways, bunkers that have seen better days and greens that need ALOT of work to bring them back to how they used to be.
£25 for buggy hire is also a bit steep in my opinion.
Donnington Grove
The course really struggling from lack of water as lots of fairways very firm and several tees quite badly damaged.
Greens where also quite uneven (could do with a good roll)
Donnington grove
Great course but the condition has really gone downhill. Greens were so bumpy was very scruffy in general and there was so much sand in the bunkers with loads of stones. We were also behind 2 balls who all looked like they'd never played before and had to ask to be called through as a 2 ball. Shame because the layouts fantastic
Great
Enjoyed the round, been struggling to play on some of the shorter courses in and around Newbury, but something seemed to click on this harder track, I was a member here between 2008 and 2010, and it improved my game then, you basically have to strike the ball well to post a good score. Greens were very good,
Best course in West Berks...
Excellent course - the best test of golf in West Berks, although the greens need attention and the bunkers require a total overhaul to bring it back to its very best.
Great facilities, and a well stocked pro shop make for an enjoyable day and I would recommend to all golfers - unless you're a low handicapper I'd recommend the yellow tees though as 7100+ is a tough test!
Disappointing and sad
Having been a member at this course I thought I would return to see what the condition was like. Very sadly my reason to leave was vindicated and even so much as the condition is deteriorating rapidly. Tee boxes were uneven and mostly sandy, fairways not lush and very disappointing are the state of the greens..little pot holes and uneven. Could not trust the roll as went all over the place. For USPGA greens they have lost them and need a lot of work.Could even see a liner in one bunker where they have clearly done one renovation work. Donnington Grove has the potential to be one of the premier courses in Berkshire but sadly its neglected and only deteriorating on this evidence.
