Matfen Hall Golf Club - Standing Stone Course
About
After four years in a temporary clubhouse, Matfen Hall Golf Club made its long awaited move into Matfen Hall itself at the beginning of March 1999. Built in 1830 amid beautiful Northumberland countryside, the imposing ancestral home of the Blackett Family has been converted into a luxury country house hotel with excellent facilities for golfers.
The Conservatory Bar is an impressive and hospitable '19th' hole with panoramic views over the course. Each of the thirty-one bedrooms has its own individual character and with superb dining to be had in the Library restaurant, Matfen Hall is the ideal venue for a golfing break.
Other golfing facilities include a driving range, short game practice area, and practice putting green. Plans to create a purpose built Golf Academy are well advanced.
A regular venue for professional and country amateur events, Matfen Hall's golf courses are rated as some of the finest in the North East. Sympathetically laid out on a landscape originally created by Capability Brown, parkland layout offers an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all abilities. The picturesque River Pont comes into play on several holes and the dry stone 'ha ha' which bisects the estate presents a unique obstacle. Many holes stand out but the short 10th and 17th are particularly attractive. Seven redesigned holes with new green came into play in the spring of 1999 and have improved the overall quality of the course even further.

Truly Excellent, Best In NE
Top class standards under new ownership, the course is in impeccable condition and is unrivalled in the area. 5*
Great course
We played the Dewlaw and Douglas, both 9 holes are very good, greens in excellent condition and very consistent. Stay out of the rough, it’s absolutely savage!
Brilliant Round
We had nearly all 4 seasons in a day but, that didn’t stop us from having a great round.
What a turnaround
I was a member of matfen 3 years ago but left due to the poor state of the course. This was my 1st time back playing and want a turnaround the course is in fantastic condition. Bunkers are full of sand and give you the confidence to fully commit to the shot. The only negative point I have is that the rough is beyond treturous if you go into the long stuff forget about finding it. Absolute pleasure going back for a round and it won't be a 3 year wait for my next round.
generoous fairways so miss the fairway at your peril as rough is brutal ! Great condition overall thoroughly enjoyed my repeat visit . Shame it wasnt being fully utilised
Gale force winds
Course still open with winds in excess of 40 knots. Almost impossible to play. Asked reception if we could kindly return on another say to day and lady was extremely unhelpful.
The course was very quiet and was in excellent condition for the time of year. There could be more markers to identify the next tee box, and more visible range markers, but overall a lovely course to play. Will definitely play here again.
Joanne & Bob Matfin
Returning to golf after 4 yrs--so i needed a easy walking course , Matfen ideal and having played here many times it was good to see progress of the course itself . My caddie (the wife) again proved to be a better putter than me.
Played Dewlar--across the road then Douglas. Both were fine but the ground was like walking on Pease pudding .
Staff great-they always are ! ..
Yes a good day & suprised i got round 18 holes especially with new clubs--many thanks Matfen from a Matfin
One of the best courses I’ve ever played
Not one thing bad to say about it, course was in great condition! Staff were sound and played at a good pace on the course. 100% be back again
Very nice !
Friendly, helpful staff and welcoming. Course well manicured, bunkers proper sand, greens in good condition, very enjoyable round of golf ! Thanks
