Matfen Hall Golf Club - Standing Stone Course
About
After four years in a temporary clubhouse, Matfen Hall Golf Club made its long awaited move into Matfen Hall itself at the beginning of March 1999. Built in 1830 amid beautiful Northumberland countryside, the imposing ancestral home of the Blackett Family has been converted into a luxury country house hotel with excellent facilities for golfers.
The Conservatory Bar is an impressive and hospitable '19th' hole with panoramic views over the course. Each of the thirty-one bedrooms has its own individual character and with superb dining to be had in the Library restaurant, Matfen Hall is the ideal venue for a golfing break.
Other golfing facilities include a driving range, short game practice area, and practice putting green. Plans to create a purpose built Golf Academy are well advanced.
A regular venue for professional and country amateur events, Matfen Hall's golf courses are rated as some of the finest in the North East. Sympathetically laid out on a landscape originally created by Capability Brown, parkland layout offers an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all abilities. The picturesque River Pont comes into play on several holes and the dry stone 'ha ha' which bisects the estate presents a unique obstacle. Many holes stand out but the short 10th and 17th are particularly attractive. Seven redesigned holes with new green came into play in the spring of 1999 and have improved the overall quality of the course even further.

Great Course
This is about my fifth time i've played Matfen, the overall condition of the course was great and the greens were excellent. My only gripe was i booked a Hot Deal and was told on arrival we were playing another 2 ball, which i just wanted a friendly game with a mate, anyway i had to pay a further £10 pound so the 2 of us could play.
I was told by chap at clubhouse its in the Golfnow rules........so take note!
Great and challenging course
Fantastic condition with some tough shots! I lost a lot of balls but really enjoyed it!
Outstanding Course
WOW what a course 3 separate 9 hole courses , we played Dewlaw & Douglas courses 1 was over the road. Great course condition greens where excellent. Views amazing would highly recommend
Matfen Hall ( definitely worth a round )
Ive played here before and never been disappointed.
Access and car parking are spot on.
Staff are extremely friendly, professional and polite.
Course is in tip top condition.
Beware of the rough though.. If you stray off the fairways, its reload time. Very deep & thick rough .
One disappointment today was the ‘ usually wonderful ‘ bacon sandwich.. No buns ( not acceptable ) and pre-cooked bacon in cheap sliced bread, and at £4:10p very overpriced...
That aside, an enjoyable day at Matfen Hal Golf Club..
I will return
Covid layout
Played here today for the first time but enjoyed GoApe a few times in the past which is also on site. Driving range to warm up with. Staff very friendly. Course is a temporary layout for covid but having never played before, it ran well for us. Green keepers were out maintaining the course which was in a lovely condition. Only downfall was the rough, if you happen to go in there then safe to say the ball is probably gone. Would definitely go back.
Windy afternoon
The staff were super helpful and friendly but the course and greens were in poor condition. I’ve played several courses in the area and they are a long way better than here.
My other niggle is that the rough just off the fairway is very long so spend long time looking for balls
A game of two halves
Played the Standing Stone /Dewlaw combination. Standing Stone course condition was ok although tee boxes were a bit mixed, some a bit rough and needing to be cut. Greens were undergoing maintenance and accordingly played poorly. Dewlaw loop was in much better condition and greens were all good. Overall an interesting course with lots of length variety between holes. Fairways are all generous so suitable for everyone. Scenery was good and pace of play sensible. Shop and off course facilities are excellent. Overall well worth a visit and decent value for money.
Lovely evening
Excellent evening playing 28 holes course in excellent condition. Greens fast which you’d expect this time of year. Staff very friendly. Had a experience on the 14th that was rather surreal a Streaker or a spooky encounter running through the green into the woods. Helped me though as it’s the the hardest hole and I got a par. All round a great evenings golf and some lovely scenery to look out to with a cold pint of Guinness !!
Water works
I love this course with its lake and meandering streams which I managed to find on a number of occasions. Weather wasn’t great. It was windy and raining on and off but it didn’t stop up from having a thoroughly enjoyable round.
