Matfen Hall Golf Club - Standing Stone Course
About
After four years in a temporary clubhouse, Matfen Hall Golf Club made its long awaited move into Matfen Hall itself at the beginning of March 1999. Built in 1830 amid beautiful Northumberland countryside, the imposing ancestral home of the Blackett Family has been converted into a luxury country house hotel with excellent facilities for golfers.
The Conservatory Bar is an impressive and hospitable '19th' hole with panoramic views over the course. Each of the thirty-one bedrooms has its own individual character and with superb dining to be had in the Library restaurant, Matfen Hall is the ideal venue for a golfing break.
Other golfing facilities include a driving range, short game practice area, and practice putting green. Plans to create a purpose built Golf Academy are well advanced.
A regular venue for professional and country amateur events, Matfen Hall's golf courses are rated as some of the finest in the North East. Sympathetically laid out on a landscape originally created by Capability Brown, parkland layout offers an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all abilities. The picturesque River Pont comes into play on several holes and the dry stone 'ha ha' which bisects the estate presents a unique obstacle. Many holes stand out but the short 10th and 17th are particularly attractive. Seven redesigned holes with new green came into play in the spring of 1999 and have improved the overall quality of the course even further.

Great course
A lot of fun, tricky bunkers, streams and walls, beautiful venue and course
DO NOT BOOK HERE
Absolutely terrible customer service. Got a phone call saying two of the courses where closed due to water logging and told would have to play 9 holes only and could repeat if wanted. Told no refunds as course still open for play?! No offer of a refund or to rebook due to weather conditions.
Good course and in great condition in February
Good course in great condition. Good facilities and staff are friendly. Enjoyable day alround
Great course windy but very enjoyable
Fantastic course amd a lovely setting.
Only spoilt by a ladies three ball taking far too long and demonstrating really poor etiquette.
Not the clubs fault but they could have waived me through and not stayed on the green chatting whilst I was waiting to tee off on the par threes.
Thankfully they walked off after nine holes.
Not a good course when wet
Nice layout, greens good, etc. Main problem was the wet winter conditions. The grass was allowed to grow too long, probably due to it being wet. The rough was long and damp. Every shot was a mud ball. We gave ourselves preferred lies. I think this course will be excellent in summer and autumn but not in winter.
Poor fairways
Fairways were poor due to being very muddy. We haven’t had much rain so don’t know why the course was so heavy. Spoke to a couple of members who said the same and it’s the reason some haven’t renewed. The greens were excellent but £17.50 for 3 beers afterwards is ridiculous
Tee me up again...
Crisp, cool and damp, but what else would you expect in November... The course played extremely well, but long, and the greens were in great condition. Thoroughly enjoyable round of golf, finished with a hot buttie and coffee in the Keepers Lodge.
Old Favourite
Haven’t played here for years but good to see it’s still in great condition and you forget how good some of the holes are.
Facilities very good
Good Condition for October
Played Standing 9. Then Dewlay. First 9 more challenging and better layout. Some very interesting variety of holes. Well worth a visit good value on a hot deal
Great Game
The course was in a great condition, and the greens were fast and true.
Terrible greens
Played yesterday and course was terrible, tee boxes as long grass and hadn’t been cut, greens were a disgrace but still got charged £45 each to play. Won’t be going back.
Good Course
I've played Matfen a few times and although we booked to play Dewlaw and Douglas courses on arrival we were advised it was Douglas and Standing Stone we'd be playing. It was a little disappointing as Standing Stone is a bit tough for my skill set. Needless to say the course was on really good condition and it was quiet so we were able to take it at a good pace. I still feel £35 is above average for a round of golf but I suppose you get what you pay for. Good Course and good round overall.
