Queen Park on a sunny Saturday!
Played Queens Park for the second time this year, only getting back into golf after many years off, so a challenging course which I have always enjoyed due to tightness of holes and variety. The only down fall was lots of the general public out for walks and not keeping to the paths, quiet a few just wondering down the fairways and a few greens could do with some work to them as only a few were a bit patchy, but in general a great experience and I improved from my last round 😊.
A Great Old Established Course
I've always wanted to play Queen's Park, having lived in the local area all my life. It's a magnificent local amenity with mature trees, lovely views and a little bit of countryside in a built up residential area. Having played on a par 3 course for 6 months as a novoce since redescovering golf (lessons 25 years ago!) we finally felt we were just about ready for a more challenging course. The gentleman behind the counter was friendly and welcoming, reassuring us that it wasn't too busy and off we went. The hills were a challenge at times having only played at Solent Meads which is flat. We stopped for a break after the 11th and went back to the club house for a comfort break and refreshments. Back to the course afterwards and started back on the 15th hole and carried on from there to the 18th. We found the dog walkers mainly respectful to us and apart from one group the walkers ok too. We didn't do too bad for the first attempt on a big course and for a skilled golfer it must be a challenging and enjoyable course.
Summer golf
The course played well with the greens quite smooth..the fareways were very firm due to not much rain.. there is a nice bar for a drink afterwards.
Not good enough for the money
Queen’s Park is a challenging course and really its only appeal. The greens are in poor condition, flooded somehow in some places and the swathes of dog walkers really take the shine off playing there.
You can pay the same £25 green fee and play at Bulberry Woods, a considerably better kept course and no dog walkers.
Great layout. Shame the club doesn't have more money.
Queens Park is a great layout and years ago was a championship course however the club doesn't have a lot of money to keep it in really top condition. Some of the tees are quite old looking and the fairways and greens require more maintenance. I would recommend but you must be patient with dog walkers and the general public. Staff are always welcoming and helpful. I have enjoyed playing the course over a number of years.
A bit tired
Tight course that is feeling a bit tired. Grass thin everywhere. Poor temporary tees. Greens pretty good.
Self righteous walkers galore
Lovely course and staff let down by absolutely stupid moron walkers who walk across green and let they’re feral lose to run around and some walkers rude and think they know everything if you can get over this it’s a amazing course
mr Farmer
took advantage of a hot deal so had a great price, weather was wet and windy so we had the course to ourselves..
consequently pace of play, value for money was good, the course for recent weather conditions was average with some greens suffering from vandalism (mountain bikes skidding on greens, tyre marks) as it is a public area too. Dog walkers were very sensible and waited for our signals to cross fairways.
We took advantage of what was on offer, i wouldnt be happy to pay the full tee prices as they would be too high for the round considering the overall condition of the greens.
Queens Park visit
Was bit worried reading reviews after a few years since last visit but still same enjoyable challenge. Yes tee mats and one temporary green but is middle of February. Yes quite a few walkers around course but you just have to be sensible and patient still round in 3 hours 10 minutes not bad at all. It is a public area and for green fee it’s a decent course not as thick rough and fast running for ball to run into trouble so more playable. I enjoyed it and very friendly in shop and cafe
Winter golf
This is a good winter course not too wet although it had a few temporary greens.
Pros and cons
Pros:
- (main one) normally open in winter when other courses are shut
- some challenging holes
- very friendly staff
Cons:
- it’s a public park so often busy with dog walkers and others, some with no consideration for golfers (although some very good)
- the greens aren’t great
- easy to have a ‘blow up’ hole that wrecks your card
It’s Still Got Something About It
I played the course for the first time in a number of years (used to play it regularly when I was younger).
For January it wasn’t in bad condition and we had a very enjoyable round. Greens were running true the main frustration with the course being on public space is the dog walkers who literally have no regard for where they are and just walk up the middle of fairways.
With some care and attention this course could be the gem it once was.
The lady running the cafe was wonderful, nothing was too much trouble and she was very welcoming.
This course just needs some investment from the council again which would make it a very attractive proposition to golfers young and old!
Accident waiting to happen!!
Booked as a lads golf trip and I could not believe what I was seeing! This course is open to the public which I've experienced before but not to this degree! Normally walking paths are separate from the course and people have a sense of what danger a golf ball flying through the air can potentially be....not here....people have a total disregard of the fact people are hitting golf balls and often walk across fairways, stand andd have a chat and have no thought whatsoever for the golfers...I was stunned by the fact children were walking across fairways and adults with babies in the firing line....we were often waiting for long periods of time simply to allow people to clear the fairway! This is not just dog walkers, this is a public playground with couples, children, groups and if course dog walkers walking around oblivious to the dangers! There will be an accident at some point and I for one would never play here again...it's almost as though the public are protesting to the golf!! Awful experience and a shame....if it were managed better and more safely it could be a gem!! You've been warned
Always good value
£20 each is a bargain. Not too many dog walkers out & greens a bit iffy (some good, some not so) but to be expected this time of year.
Can’t go wrong for the price
Terrible condition
This course is now a joke , shame really as it good be decent , but the greens are disgusting fairways are like a 2nd cut of rough in parts and there are litterally hundreds of people just treating the golf course as a public park ! Walking up and down the fairways and over the greens and not giving a care in the world . Paid £27 which was £20 too much.
