Potomac Shores
Very well maintained, staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Price is always very high here, so getting a good deal online was too good to pass up.
Great conditions
This was a great course, that was in fantastic shape. Fairways and greens were immaculate. Pace of play was average.
Beautiful Course.
This course was recommended to me by a friend who lives in the area. The course exceeded expectations. The course was in perfect condition and the layout is beautiful. Played from the Gold tees which is about 6,500 yards. Tee boxes and greens were in great shape. Pro shop staff was friendly and inviting. The starter Harry was extremely friendly and gave us a great send off before we hit the first tee. We played in the afternoon for $59 which is a great value for this course. We ate after our round at the onsite restaurant which had great food. I would highly recommend this course if you’ve never played it.
Under appreciated
I’m shocked that the reviews of this course aren’t as high as I would expect. The new fairways were in pristine shape. With them being so smooth, you can really take advantage of all the undulations and elevation the course offers. It makes for a really stimulating round that will keep you thinking. Only visited one bunker but it was in great shape with plenty of soft sand. Greens were firm and rolled true. Tee boxes were a bit beat up but not nearly as bad as similar tier public courses are. Beverage cart came by four times. Our round took 3:40. There is literally nothing I could complain about. If you’ve played here in the past and had a bad experience, you will be seriously rewarded for giving them another shot.
Problems corrected
If you scroll below, you are bound to see some bad reviews for this course, as it looks like it had a bad 2017-2019. Whatever those problems were, they have been corrected. The course was in fantastic condition, with teeboxes, fairways and greens showing no signs of issues.
The only thing I would suggest to the course owners is working with the GPS providers to fix the hole routing. There has been a change and its weird to figure out what hole your GPS is measuring versus what hole you are actually on. Truly, a nitpick if there ever was one.

Great first experience
First time playing at Potomac Shores and will definitely play it again. Been living in the area for a year and this is by far the best course I've played. The course was immaculate, challenging and well staffed. Highly recommend playing here, I don't believe you will be disappointed.
Great Layout
Good value, great layout. Fairway conditions good, rough ok, tee boxes fair, and greens smooth but very slow.
Friendly staff, tasty menu choices, and nice outdoor "19th hole" overlooking 16th hole, which used to be 18th hole.
Great Improvement
Potomac Shores has improved since my last visit (2018). It is definitely not a course for a walkers. The new re-routing makes for some long spaces between some holes. However, it is nice to finish on what was Hole #3; unless you don't like to hit your approach over a wide gully
The fairways and greens have improved and should get better when the weather warms up. Their was a beverage cart out with snacks and food. I will play there again...soon.
.
Nice course kinda pricey
Great course condition was great. $90 pp and no military discount on weekends. Guess military is only valued on weekdays.
First Time
Our usual foursome wanted to trying a new course. The price was right and it was an easy drive down 95. The course was in good shape but will be better in a few weeks. Challenging, but not too challenging. Greenside bunkers were no joke. I like that off the tee, you can be a little aggressive with the angles. But you will pay if you bite off too much. The greens were a little hard to hold. I expect they will hold better and be faster as the weather improves. Worth it and we'll be back.
Course Looks great!
Played 18 in 2.5 hrs. Course was in great shape. Fairways were beautiful and hard patches from the late fall were more lush. Bunkers in good shape. Greens recently punched were a bit slow and sandy but all else was great. Although the new #16 was a nice finishing hole, I Like the new layout and old #3 is a nice starting hole and makes more sense even to to the driving range. Good work Potomac Shores Team!
Great Course
The course is in great shape except for one recently repaired green. I love the course layout.
Needs Serious Work
This may have been a very good golf design and could be a fine, challenging course. But Troon needs to spend serious money. Rerouting 18th to 16th hole ruins finish adding drive back through condos. Clearly done to save money so starter can monitor both practice tee and starting hole, former 3rd. So many blind shots that course almost unplayable first few times from cart path only. Fairways have damage; rough a joke. Greens punched but many bare spots and no effort to make them consistent at least. Bunkers concrete under top sand layer. Clear drainage problems. 150 yard marker poles are silly and in the way.
Greens need to be mowed
Nice layout but greens were real shaggy. Need to cut the greens. Also cartpath only was an issue.
Unfortunately needs some work
This was at one point one of the better courses in the area, but still some work to be done. Half the greens were shag carpeting, and the rest were inconsistent at best. Some areas you couldn’t even putt because of holes/dead areas. Fairways were better, but still some areas were not great. Also 18 coming up to the clubhouse now being the 16th hole is just a bad decision. Hopefully one day they put the money in and make this place what it could be again.
Progress is noticeable!
I have continued to play this course at least every 6 weeks. The fairways are immaculate and some of the best in the area. They are fantastic. The tee boxes ARE the best in the area. I play alot of other courses in the area - Westfeilds, Old Hickory, Raspberry, Whiskey, Lake Presidential, Worthington, etc. - and the Potomac Shores tee boxes are excellent (Hole 2, formerly hole 4, is really the only exception). The greens are in the best shape thus far this season and the season has really just started. The traps are broken in from the massive redo last season and are in good shape.
The rough is rough. There are still patches from all of the construction the last two years. There are is still patchy rough that has not grown in; however, its really only behind a bit compared to other courses in VA that have been getting pounded with play because a certain MD governor is ... well that is a different post.
Cart path only is killing me and I am not sure I love the new layout flow, especially when it gets to 16, 17, 18.
Keep up the good work Potomac Shores! See you soon.
