Could Be Worse
This is way better than Woodley Lakes, but that’s not a high bar. The course is very forgiving (long, straight, wide) and would be a lot more fun/challenging with more fairway bunkers (which I heard they’ve slowly removed over the years). That said, most of the bunkers on the course are in terrible condition (I had one bunker shot that was basically a deep rough shot). The greens are pretty rudimentary (basically, they don’t break at all). Pace of play is a bit of an issue, especially on par threes, but that’s par for the course on LA public courses. All said, there are worse ways to spend $40 in four hours, but this isn’t a top notch golf experience.
Encino Golf Course
Fix the bunkers already! Grass and weeds growing in half of them. Inconsistent sand. Always unracked. Terrible!
Slow Pace Great Challenge
Been several times . Pace is just over 4 hours unless you get behind a party group. Course plays long. Lots of fairway woods needed
Nice course that needs some love
I have been playing Encino since I was a child. The course is straight forward and does not have much to it but is normally in pretty good shape. Greens were super slow and spongy. Bunkers were full of grass and hard as a rock so not really sand traps at all. Pace of play was fine but would help if more water available on course as nothing at all on course and to stop takes a desc ent amount of time as not location convenient.
Greens are dead
Somebody didn’t look after the greens properly. They have brown patches and are soft and hairy. Just horrible. Receptive, sure, but they are terrible to putt on. Shaggy and sponge-like. Really disappointing.
And will somebody do something about the bunkers!!! How about maintenance??!! People pay the same money as at other courses, since the price hikes it’s all the same, so why are the bunkers dead with green growth in them???? Unconscionable and irresponsible!!!
But, at least the fairways are not land-mines like at Wilson with the gopher holes and mounds. That’s about the only positive.
Encino
Normally, Encino is maintained in decent condition. The last two times we played the bunkers have been in horrible condition. Grass growing in them, not edged, unraked and uncleaned of debris. Very disappointing.
BEST VALUE FOR YOUR MONEY
Course is in great condition. Greens are in great condition. I’ve never been paired up with unpleasant people. Great, fun track to work on your game.
I have played here for over 38 years and a week ago was the last time playing the encino course and the greens were rolling so pure and evenly throughout all 18 holes that I've ever played on,so congrats to the greenskeepers for that, only problem I have, which is for every city course as of the past two years, with the influx of amateurs and other trashy people who have no respect for the golf courses is, they don't fix their divots and it's gotten really bad, also please put more sand in your bunkers!!
Overall, I do enjoy playing both sides of the courses,Balboa/Encinitas and will play here again and again!!
Pro Shop and Cart guys
Pro shop was very friendly and helpful. The cart barn guys went above and beyond with customer service as well. Will definitely be back.
Great value and course!
This course is easy to walk even though I used a cart today.
The course was in great condition and I played a solid round of golf :-)
The course is pretty flat and with wide fairways, it makes it a little easier for us Slicers :-)
The staff here is the best and the nicest!
They got putting areas, chipping and a driving range.
I come as often as I can.
Price hike
LA City’s excuse to push the twilight rates back to “match” the other, non-City courses in the area doesn’t hold water, because at least at those other courses the course is maintained, with sand in the bunkers and raked, with much better, smoother greens, so you get your money’s worth.
Now LA City just wants your money so the twilight time being pushed way back, 2 hours later than it used to be 2 years ago, is unconscionable, since the courses are not in any better shape, are not maintained, most of the bunkers have grass bits growing in them and are not raked daily.
LA City is truly the worst place in the world
