Chateau Elan Golf Club - Woodlands Course
About
Chateau Elan boasts three public courses, two championship courses and a nine-hole course, as well as a private golf club, The Legends. The Woodlands Course is one of the public courses. It is considered the most scenic of the three championship layouts with stunning views of the north Georgia foothills and a landscape of sparkling lakes and towering trees. Of the two public championship golf courses, the Woodlands is considered to be slightly more challenging thanks to several tree-lined holes that require a fair amount of accuracy. The rolling terrain provides plenty of elevation changes, so be prepared for some tricky blind shots. The lakes and ponds dotting the course come into play on several holes as well. Although it enjoys a beautiful mountain setting, Chateau Elan is conveniently only 40 minutes from Atlanta.

Even better than I expected
I played the Woodlands course at Chateau Elan for the first time, and it was fantastic. I've always wanted to check out the course, and I got a hall pass for early Sunday. The guy at the bag drop was very friendly, offering course management advice once I told him it was my first time playing the course. In the club house, their credit card machine was down, so checking in took a little extra time, but no big deal. The course itself is very well maintained... challenging, but not overly penal. The elevation changes force you to think your way around the course. I consider myself an above average putter, but the greens had my number. Green speed was consistent hole to hole, but reading the breaks was killing me! Anything outside of 2 feet is no gimme on this course.
The only "knocks" I could give are that the course is not well marked. I don't mean sprinkler yardages (we all have devices for that at this point), but the course itself. I couldn't find the driving range without asking someone. Then, when I got to the first hole, I couldn't tell if I was on the right hole. The hole number is actually on a small plaque on the ball washer stand, which was covered up by the ball washer towel. Of course, I didn't notice this until about the 5th hole. My only clue on the 1st hole was that the scorecard said it was a par-5... and the hole looked like it was a par-5. Besides that minor getting started confusion, it was a great morning of golf.
I often play Reunion GC, which is nearby. But for just a few extra dollars, Chateau Elan-Woodlands is easily a better track.
Make sure you play this course
Great course, could not have been in better shape. We had a great time, the staff here treats you like family. Make sure you get out and play this course.
Great layout. Lot of sand.
Very open course with a lot of sand. Very fun and challenging to play. Will play it any chance I get.
Woodlands not maintained - very poor shape
From rocks in the bunker and sand washed outside of the bunker lip to huge patches of torn up fairway, the course was in terrible shape. Greens are rolling decently, but the undulations in the greens are absurd. I've played the course a few times and never seen it in this bad of shape. For what should be a prestigious course and the amount of money they normally charge for a round, it should be in much better shape. Also, the yardage markers are very hard to find. Grass grown over the tops, etc. Glad we got a last minute tee time and got about 60% off.
the course looks really bad from the fairways and the edge of rough
the bunkers seemed to have rocks in them, instead of sand and i was really dissappointed in the conditions, this used to be such a really nice and beautiful course,no one to greet you when you drive up. i got out loaded my on bag on the cart and went inside.. what's happening with chateau,it need's a change and quickly.
Potentially Great Greens not Good
I was very disappointed in with the greens when I played at Chateua Elan. I visited the hotel before but this was my first time playing there. It was noted that the greens had been aerated three weeks prior to us coming so we called and asked if they were in good shape. They weren't in good shape. I know I didn't pay full price but $40 is nothing to sneeze at especially after driving all the way up there. We were offered a $10 off coupon for next round. Not very much on a $80 round. Overall very disappointed for what is perceived to be a class facility.
Bad greens and traps
Greens were recently punched and needed to be rolled. The traps were hard packed. Not what I expected. I have played Wooglands many times, but not recently. I expected better conditions.
Greens are horrible.
Dont go to chateau right now.. Greens are in terrible shape after spring aeration. Unputtable to say the least. No mardhall to move the stagnant play. Absolutely mind boggling slow play. Much nicer courses in the area. I wont be back.
Great deal with the discount, overpriced normally.
The day we played Woodlands, the greens had just been aerated and were bumpy and slow. Everything else was great. The course was quiet; all the trees blocked sound even from golfers behind or in front of us. The views were great and the holes played smoothly with wide fairways and forgiving rough. The only real complaint is that you have to buy a yardage book if you want to see a course layout. Fortunately, most of the flags were visible from the tees, but it's frustrating to have to guess or waste time looking.
Course has great variety of holes.
The course's greens had been large hole aerated 17 days ago and still putted fairly rough. We knew that going in but we still expected the greens to have been in better shape.
Staff was awesome and friendly.
The bunkers need major renovations. Hard clay on the Woodlands course. Will only play the Chateau until bunkers are fixed.
For the Money on GOLFNOW.com, best value in Atl
Greens were surprisingly in great shape and course in good shape for this time of year -- Challanging, but enjoyable.
Decent shape....challenging layout
I like this course. It is challenging for all levels.
Course has potential
Bunkers desperately need maintenance. Greens have an abundance of scalped ball marks. It was hard to get a true roll on the greens.
Overbooked and understaffed
We had a 12:52 tee time on the Chateau course. When we arrived at the first tee, there were at least 8 carts sitting there with groups waiting to tee off. There was no starter in sight and it was total chaos. I finally went all the way back to the pro shop where I had to wait for someone to come to the desk. I asked if we could switch to the Woodlands course and was told yes. There was no starter on that course either but we were able to tee off. It was agonizingly slow, howver and we had to wait on nearly every shot. It was obvious that the course had been overbooked and there were no starters or marshalls to control/monitor the pace of play. I will not play there again.
Great course. Challenging greens. Perfect green condition.
There were some construction going on and had to play #12 hole before playing #7 hole. Although the sign was kind of small and we missed playing #12 hole.
The person at the pro shop should have told that there are some irregular routing before playing...
This course is a great challenge for golfers of all levels.
This course has a real nice layout. Enough length for the high handicap golfer without being to long.
disappointed with the course condition.
The course definitely need an attention. Fairways were too wet even with no rains at all for a week. don't understand why it is that wet all over. It was not a $75 value course condition at all.
Great course!!!
I played with two my friends. we very satisfied this course and enjoyed much.
Love this course!
Has plenty of "bite" for low handicappers. Don't try to play further back than you should, and you'll enjoy it.
The bent grass greens are now healed and immaculate!
