Lake Chabot Golf Course - The 18 Hole Course
About
Situated within the Oakland Hills, Lake Chabot Golf Course offers stunning views that stretch across Oakland, Bay Bridge, and the Lake Chabot area. The course has been a local favorite since it first opened in 1932. Slight changes have been made over the years to improve the layout but it has always maintained its playability. The terrain is hilly, which makes flat lies hard to find. Accuracy and precise shot placement will get you far. The stretch of holes from the 15th to the finish has the best scenery on the golf course. From the risk-reward 15th hole, you can see all the way to San Francisco. The unique final hole is a par 6 that plays to a whopping 673 yards from the back tees. It's a straight, downhill hole with a memorable view.

Challenging course, up and down fairway
The course is well maintain, Provide enough challenge with
up and down fairway, elevated tee boxes and greens, a couple
of blind tee shots and an exiting par 6 last hole.
typical muni conditions
fairways mostly ok, some dry areas, some areas need grass seeding, at least the daisys are cut down, greens were decent but could be faster.
One of the best municipal courses in CA
Single digit handicap having completed 3rd round on course in a month. Competent cordial staff, good pace of play on a challenging course that has few flat lies. Greens were very well maintained and ball rolled true on 95% with speed very predictable and consistent with club house practice greens. This is the hilliest course have every played requiring extra thought on club selection and stance to ensure good distance. Not much difference in Blue to White tees having played both with driver or 3 wood easily on Par 5s in 3 or less. Only real criticism is that Tee boxes need some serious attention having to tee up on most well behind the markers for a decent flat playing surface not severely chewed up.
Highlight of round I'd time on 11th meeting Charlotta and savouring her hamburgers which have no rivals anywhere in the Bay Area! In addition to the food, Carlotta sets a standard for personality and customer surface unmatched by any food service on a golf course played to date. If your in the customer service industry, spending some time observing Carlotta work her magic is time well spent for anyone who wants to master this skill. All-in-all, Lake Chabot provides a great round of golf at a very reasonable price.
Down Hill
This track is a shell of it's former self. The playing surface plays worse that it looks. The shredded and torn American Flag they chose to display is a direct reflection of how disgraceful this place has become. I won't be back.
lot of up and down terrains
The course fair ways is a bit dry with brown spots. That is understandable due to the dry weather. However, the greens are very good. Marshall is great in patrolling.
It is situated up in the hills and inland. So you don't hear much of traffic and that is very good. It is a lovely course and playable.
Lake Chabot
So driving in I couldn't help but think I was on the wrong course, compared to the images on the site and reviews.
Well, I set up a 4'some on a Sunday and the price was decent enough so I gave it a shot. The pro shop seemed well stocked, and I did like their logo design on their hats and shirts. The staff behind the counter seemed to be all over the place. They incorrectly rang me up, partially because he tried to take a phone call while ringing me up.
They might as well not even offer a driving range, there were no nets up, it was a hill with 2- 100 yard markers, and a 150 marker. You could only hit SW - 6 iron because of the lack of nets. The overall look of the driving range was saddening. It was a dirt hill with some dead grass. The ranges balls were either chipped, cracked, or downright covered in mud as well.
Well, we get some swings in and press out. The marshal checks us in, and says hang tight and ill let you know. Then wanders off, doing who knows what. Finally he comes back and we ask him if we are clear to tee off and he looks and says well yeah, you should have tee'd off already.. (don't tell us to sit tight, and then wander away)
The course was a mess, It looks and plays like concrete. The course was almost completely dead grass, the grass that was green was crab grass so it made for interesting rolls on the hills both up and down. For some reason the course was designed with only one access road which drives through about 6-8 holes right down the center.. the entire lay out was not well thought out. I have played plenty of hill courses and this was the least desirable.
The overall maintenance on this course was downright embarrassing. From lack of garbage cans, to restrooms that look like falling apart sheds, to no ball washers to the cart paths... oh man don't even get me started on the paths. They are a terrible wreck and often felt like we were going 4 wheeling on a atv and not out to play a round of Sunday golf.
Also, we had a 2'some in front of us that was a older couple. We were not trying to rush them and the marshal comes up around hole 5 or 6 to tell us we are off pace and need to speed it up. As we were sitting in the tee box waiting for the couple ahead to clear the fairways. Never said anything to the actual group causing any sort of delay, and there was no one behind us clearing their hole so just seemed random for him to come to us to discuss pace of play.
Oh, both carts in our group died by about the 14th hole. We literally had to push them to make it up the hills. and turn them off in between any tee shots to try and save up enough juice to make it to the final hole. They did make it but not by much., Thank god the 18th was entirely down hill.
Finally, after all said and done we went to grab something to drink while we tallied scores and sat around for about 5 minutes, no one.. Asked for a bartender and they said they will be right out.. 5 more minutes pass and we finally said, its time to go and headed out.
Really one of the most negative golf course experiences
Great views of the bay area
Nice course to play for the price. It has a lot of challenging holes where placement is crucial. The greens are in fantastic shape.
Unique layout, could be a lot of fun under more lush conditions.
Fairways baked, tee boxes a bit scruffy. Greens on the other hand are quite nice. Solid muni, good value, but there are other courses in the area that offer a more complete package. Nice staff.
It's a Muni....
Some of the most beautiful terrain you will see for a golf course. That's the good.
Now the downside(s):
- Fairways really sparse - You will need to play winter rules to have grass to hit from on some of your shots in the fairway.
- The fairways cross the entrance road several times; Really nothing they could do with the design, but kinda strange waiting for cars to pass before you hit.
- The driving range is adjacent to the first hole; As you drive up hole one cartpath, you are in jeopardy!
The greens are good, so no worries there.
This is the first time that I have ever played a par 6 (#18)
Very interesting hole.
Interesting layout
Fairway dry and patchy.
Green are in really good condition
Challenging course.
Restrooms not abundant.
No food /drink carts on course or drinking water sources
Very nice course
Had a very nice round of golf on a course that has some very tuff holes. If you hit the ball straight you will love this course.
Best course for the money in the East Bay
I have played Chabot for many years and have seen it transform from a beaten mess of mud and cart tracks into a my favorite course. Though it's a muni and far from perfectly kept, the design is challenging. You MUST control your ball or you will lose many. Despite the difficulties the short length means that an accurate player can shoot a low round.
The greens are excellent and may be the most challenging part of the course. A few holes have fairly flat traditional types, but most are small and dramatically sloping, some tucked away in tree guarded corners or on plateaus with precarious dropoffs for the errant approach.
Probably the best thing about Chabot is that it's not a flat 6400 yard cookie cutter surrounded by houses. It's up and down winding through a beautiful part of the Oakland HIlls and thus has immense charm and character.
course was lacking water, lots of brown and sandy tee boxes
enjoyable other than alot of brown dry areas...lack of watering
The course needs attention.
The course conditions need attention. The condition of the course was not as good as some of the other heavily played courses that I've played. I would say that Diablo Creek is the standard and Lake Chabot falls far short of that course. The greens and fairways were just not in good condition.
Hole No 18 - Par 6
Heard about the Par 6 18th and drove up from South Bay - of course chose the wrong day as it was sweltering hot. Fairways and teeboxes definitely require attention but the greens are well maintained - but all in all was a great experience as I birdied the Par 6. This hole really plays like a Par 5 if you can drive straight( or even a little right) and get that downhill roll. Staff are nice and friendly especially the starter ( he tried getting me earlier than my booked time).
nice views with challanging holes.
while I enjoyed the course, the fairways seam to be needing some attention in the form of water. Hard to hit off dry, hard fairways. While the 18th hole is unique, it just seams to be long for the sake of being long. Sense it is downhill, all you have to do is hit the ball in that general direction to make a good score. The 9th hole on the other hand, was interesting and challenging. All in all, I don't think I'll be rushing back anytime soon.
Fun layout, fairways are very brown in places though.
I really like the layout. Pace of play is usually pretty good. Greens were in good shape but the fairways were pretty poor with lots of brown areas. At $43 it wasn't much of a bargain.
Excellent greens and views
Using the golfnow, the price was very affordable.
Greens were in excellent condition and rolling very true. The fairways were very hard, almost hard pan so very hard to hit the ball. The rough was all dried up and similar to hard pan.
There are roads in play on many of the holes. You have to be very careful when there are cars coming. Very hilly so take the cart.
Most likely I will be back, for under $30 to play 18 with cart, it is a very good value. I just wish they would water the fairways so it is not a hard pan.
Well maintained...super friendly staff
Breakfast at the café was vary tasty. Check in, cart assignment and tee off time could not have been more professional. Staff must have been attentive to pace of play....as a twosome we moved through the course quite nicely. Rough just off the greens was a bit too thick for my ability. ALL the greens were in great condition.
