Nicklaus Greens
The greens are really tough but the course itself is perfectly fair and playable. Pin placements can be tough.
Course was in amazing shape and the amenities are outstanding. It's a typical Nicklaus design so unless you are familiar with greens, be prepared to 3 putt of 4 putt. Lots of retirees and course-members playing very slow...not sure if always the case but i didnt see a marshal go around to help people move along. Waited every hole on every shot. Including having to wait on par5s was annoying.
Great course
Great conditions, everything was well watered.
The ice/water machine on hole 4 was not working, however. Sucks on a 110 degree day.
Pleasurable Round
From dropping your clubs off from the car to check-in, Pick your cart up after check-in, and proceed to a great practice facility. As to get close to your tee time, visit Terry the Starter, who always has a joke for you. Terry saw us on #10, offering us water and a fresh towel. Would definitely recommend Sterling Grove to anyone visiting Arizona.
Love Sterling Grove!!!
Best staff, best hospitality, best facilities and best amenities I’ve seen in a course that’s open to the public! Play it and dine at the Copper & Rye after before it all turns private.
Good as you get for Summer Rounds
While the course is still growing (trees), I’ve always enjoyed Sterling. Has some of the best facilities I’ve seen in a golf course. Course is in about as good of condition for summer. The course needs about another week or 2 to let the sand ware down from the aerification. But outside of that conditions are great. Fairways and greens are cut nice. Little firm due to the summer and greens are always an adventure with all the curves.
Awesome facility
Everyone warns about the fast undulating greens which I found justifiable. I also found they rolled true in my view. I don't know enough about grasses to identify the particular type but the surface was not at all smooth though. Kudos to the grounds crew for maintaining a good balance of speed and true roll. I'm a 12 hdcp (blue tees) so I had more trouble getting to the green than I did putting on them.
Not many trees on the course to provide protection from high temps and gusty winds, so I struggled to score well. Once I rested and cooled off near hole 14 I think, I managed to finish 1 over par over the final 4 holes.
I truly enjoyed the round and admired the surroundings, including the upscale community. Incidentally, Wifey wants to forego the renovation project on our current home across town. Hum...?
Pace of Play Biggest Concern
Teed off at 1:23pm and just arrived at hole 12 3 hours later. No ranger in sight or water throughout the course as it has been a hot day. Course is in worse shape than some of the sun city courses down the road that are half the price. Would not recommend playing here during the summer wait for season when they actually care about what’s happening.
Sterling Grove SURPRISE AZ
I had a medical emergency (high blood pressure) and tried to cancel my tee time . I was advised that I could not cancel .
WOULD LIKE A CREDIT PLEASE for $48. My friend did use one of the two times that I booked.
the course had recently been plugged which I get. Around the greens was muddy and wet. In places it was unplayable due to mud.
Golfer Friendly!
Nice course. Well kept. Tough greens. Best part of this course is the people you encounter.
Tops
Beautiful layout with smooth greens and fairways. Makes you work for your scores but well worth it!!!! A must play in the West Valley!!!!!
OK Course
Why OK and not nice. Because off the top of my head I can think of 20 courses in the greater Phoenix area that have a better layout, are more scenic and have better greens.
I guess I was just disappointed. I had heard so much about how nice of course this was, and I drove an hour from the east valley to make sure I could play it before it went private. Other than I can now say I played it, it wasn't worth the drive.
The course was in good condition. And felt like a private club. But almost zero elevation change. No memorable holes. Unless you want to count the tricked-out greens. A few so bad they belonged on a putt-putt course with a clown's head and a windmill.
I have play more than 60 courses in the greater Phoenix area. I tend to rate them A, B, C and not worth playing again. This course was a mid B. I guess I expected an A. Nothing wrong with the course, except the aforementioned greens. But nothing that stuck out that said "I have to go back and play it again". This time of year, it should be a $60 course, and I got a great last-minute deal on golfnow for $80. If it was in my backyard, I would not pay $80 to play it again.
On the plus side the starter was extremely nice and helpful and I played with a member that knew the course well and was also very helpful.
