Golfer Reviews
Awesome facility
Everyone warns about the fast undulating greens which I found justifiable. I also found they rolled true in my view. I don't know enough about grasses to identify the particular type but the surface was not at all smooth though. Kudos to the grounds crew for maintaining a good balance of speed and true roll. I'm a 12 hdcp (blue tees) so I had more trouble getting to the green than I did putting on them.
Not many trees on the course to provide protection from high temps and gusty winds, so I struggled to score well. Once I rested and cooled off near hole 14 I think, I managed to finish 1 over par over the final 4 holes.
I truly enjoyed the round and admired the surroundings, including the upscale community. Incidentally, Wifey wants to forego the renovation project on our current home across town. Hum...?
Pace of Play Biggest Concern
Teed off at 1:23pm and just arrived at hole 12 3 hours later. No ranger in sight or water throughout the course as it has been a hot day. Course is in worse shape than some of the sun city courses down the road that are half the price. Would not recommend playing here during the summer wait for season when they actually care about what’s happening.
Sterling Grove SURPRISE AZ
I had a medical emergency (high blood pressure) and tried to cancel my tee time . I was advised that I could not cancel .
WOULD LIKE A CREDIT PLEASE for $48. My friend did use one of the two times that I booked.
Tops
Beautiful layout with smooth greens and fairways. Makes you work for your scores but well worth it!!!! A must play in the West Valley!!!!!
OK Course
Why OK and not nice. Because off the top of my head I can think of 20 courses in the greater Phoenix area that have a better layout, are more scenic and have better greens.
I guess I was just disappointed. I had heard so much about how nice of course this was, and I drove an hour from the east valley to make sure I could play it before it went private. Other than I can now say I played it, it wasn't worth the drive.
The course was in good condition. And felt like a private club. But almost zero elevation change. No memorable holes. Unless you want to count the tricked-out greens. A few so bad they belonged on a putt-putt course with a clown's head and a windmill.
I have play more than 60 courses in the greater Phoenix area. I tend to rate them A, B, C and not worth playing again. This course was a mid B. I guess I expected an A. Nothing wrong with the course, except the aforementioned greens. But nothing that stuck out that said "I have to go back and play it again". This time of year, it should be a $60 course, and I got a great last-minute deal on golfnow for $80. If it was in my backyard, I would not pay $80 to play it again.
On the plus side the starter was extremely nice and helpful and I played with a member that knew the course well and was also very helpful.
pristine
my wife and i were paired up with a fantastic duo, father-son. weather, pace of play and conditions were perfect. the greens were running a comfortable 10-12(estimate). pro shop person was very pleasant and engaging. one of my favorite west valley curses. i hope they don't go private as being part time residents, it would not make $ense to join and we would be very disappointed to lose sterling grove as a primo option
Sterling grove CC
Will definitely be back. Staff at the course was top tier in friendliness and making sure you were well taken care of.
Course itself was in great condition considering the time of year I played. First 100 temp day of the year and greens were still responsive and in great condition.
Fairways were perfect. Rough was well maintained however with winter grass dying off they weren’t great but that’s to be expected.
Will definitely be back before it goes completely private.
class act
. one of the west valley's gems-well run, great shape. pace of play was just under 4 hours. paired up with a father-son whom we had all the more enjoyable round with. hoping this course can stay public/private. class from beginning to end.
Awesome
Fast greens, beautifully manicured fairways, service to make you feel welcome and pampered. A truly awesome course!!!!!
First time @ SG, would like to play it next year
I've played 61 different courses in the valley over the past 22 years and always looking for a new one to play. We stay in Scottsdale so this was a 50-minute trip for us but well worth it. Pro shop, staff were great, course in very good condition. Everything about it was top notch. Course layout kind of benign, flat, but that's OK. Would definitely recommend you play it before they go private in a couple of years.
The Best
The "Sterling" was the 5th course I have played this month, and it was definitely the best. After playing 18 my wife and I had supper at the restaurant, and just like the course, it was also fantastic. If ever in the Phoenix area again I will most certainly play the "Sterling" again
Pretty darn good
This is a beautiful course that is in great shape..The fairways are generous so if you make great contact and sometimes it goes straight you will love this course. The greens have significant slope and some false fronts that will affect your score. Only two small complaints. $115 Is a lot to pay for a 3pm tee time when they tell you you wont finish because you are behind three groups of college golfers that are playing the tips and walking. One group let us through and they quit at 9 so we skipped one hole and played 18 with little light left. Our biggest complaint was we hit the beer cart on the first hole. We asked if she would be around and she said one more for sure maybe two but she would give us a last call. We bought one beer a piece and that was the last time we saw her...it was °88. We would have bought more if we knew.. I will definately play here again

4.5 hour round, Blue Tees 6485 yds, nice tees, nice fairways, nice undulating greens rolled like a 10, nice driving range, played behind college students that walked. green to tee box is long walk and thus, delay or slow play for those who ride following walkers. Pace could or round could have been completed in less than 4 hours but due to walkers 4.5 hour round.
small bar area, small restaurant. nice staff in bar and restaurant.
Clean clubhouse and manicured course, with nice tees, nice fairways, nice greens new carts, although no GPS on carts, undulating greens, nice restrooms, clubhouse small bar area 8 seats, small restaurant for seating.
