Neglected
The course is in deplorable condition. Burnt fairways, mud filled bunkers, Greens checkered with two grasses make for a ridiculously bumpy mess, lumpy barely covered tee boxes, several rancid animal carcasses on multiple holes, driving range trashed, and litter strewn across the property. Arnold Palmer's name should be removed from the property. According to staff they're currently working on refurbishing the tee boxes and then the bunkers in the spring. Maybe TROON can bring this place around again. I won't be returning anytime soon. Sad to see such a gem of a course falling apart. Apparently the owner is unwilling or unable to fork over the Necessary funds to properly maintain the facility. I hope he sells it and opens up a put put course. Sounds like that's a better fit for him since there's no maintenance involved with one.
Mud Pit
Tee boxes were a mess.
Greens were punched not too long ago, multiple types of grass on greens causing terrible rolls.
Fairways were a swamp, over watered.
They tout the course was on roto for the LPGA, AND it is an Arnold Palmer design, but, as it stands, it's a complete mess.
Hopefully Troon's money and management will make this cool layout actually playable.
Hiddenbrooke
Still a very solid course. The conditions (bunkers under repair) we're a little below par, but overall the course was in decent shape. Absolutely a great deal $33 on a Saturday including (I normally walk, but it was 98○).
Awesome Course
Hiddenbrook is an amazing course which challenges the best players and delivers on great shots.
The tee boxes are cycling and are being repaired so the front boxes are in use making the Par 5s reachable in two strokes.
I say for three Eagles yesterday and shot a 73.
Great Round!
Do yourself a favor and play Hiddenbrook.
It is challenging and provides amazing opportunities for lifetime memorable shots.
Took my brother for his birthday he never played coarse before he loved it greens were a little plunged but a fun day!!
Great course ruined by conditions
my first time playing here, course was amazing with a great clubhouse and main area but the conditions ruined the round. tee boxes were bad but bareable and the greens were terrible. just recently had the holes dug in everywhere. not sure what that is called but it makes the greens miserable. every putt would bounce all over the place and hitting or chipping on would be very unpredictable. overall i loved the course but the for whatever reason they did that to the greens completely ruined it. probably won't play again
A good course gone bad.
The conditions are the worst I have seen them. This is not to the standards of a Troon golf course.
Tee boxes & fairways are not in good condition.
What a Day
What a day we had, course was in perfect shape,weather-perfect,Proshop staff a10. Food and drink 2nd to none.Zipped around in 4 hrs, had lunch a couple of pops, The course and Staff were PERFECT!!!!! WHAT A DAY!!!! You should absolutely spend a day here.
Tight course!!!!
You need to know the course and place the shot. Not a forgiving course if you are playing it for the first time like me.
Conditions
I was very disappointed to see the course in such bad shape. The tee boxes were not maintained well and the water holes did not look as nice as they once did. I was hoping Troon management would take better care of the course. In its current condition I would not pay more than $20 to play it
Hmmmm
I have not seen this course in this condition before. I always remembered it in pristine condition but always wet, which I was ok with. Tee boxes are in terrible shape and most of the fairways are infected and/or riddled with dead spots. Too bad.
Really Needs Help
This was the first time at Hiddenbrooke, and unfortunately, the last. It just isn't any fun. The design is really tricked out. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but too many elevation changes, and I like elevation changes. Sometimes you just want to stand on a tee box and see what you're hitting right in front of you. Blind tee shots with drastically sloping fairways make this a very difficult course. Also, typical of Arnold Palmer designs, the long hitter is penalized on many holes. Palmer liked to place bunkers or other penalties out where the big boys play. All of that being said, the course is not boring, but very difficult.
Course conditions are very rough in spots. The tee boxes or awful. No excuse for that after all of the rain we've had. But the rough is simply unkempt. As other reviewers have said, you can be a few feet of the fairway and lose your ball. And aesthetically it just looks bad. The maintenance really needs to improve. The greens are in very good shape and roll very well.
Overall, if you like tricked out courses that are really hard this could be your place. But I'm never going back. Rancho and Paradise Valley will get my business around here.
Course is fine but needs TLC
This once perfectly maintained track is not perfect anymore, but it is still good. Anyone who says that the course lacks character is way off. Its still very playable and a good test of golf. Greens roll neatly, slope is there so beware still. Tee boxes are in need of a roll and tape, but I am teeing it up so not a problem. They need flattening out and grass though on a few of them to say the least. Sand is perfect to ok on most holes, tough in some other spots, to be expected from a HAZZARD! Layout is good, so play Hiddenbrooke when price is right. I would not pay more than 30 weekday or 45 weekend. They are close to those ranges so I'm still in. $85 for weekend play early is criminal though, unless they tend to the course more. And to be fair, they could hold a tournament qualifier there right now. I have seen worse. I always highly recommend Hiddenbrooke in any condition, and its not bad right now. We will see how they do into 2018 and re-evaluate this course as we play there often enough.
Still Problematic
I continue to review this course because if you are like me and play public courses, you end up here every so many weeks as there is not that much to choose from. This was once a gem and is undergoing yet another management change (from Casper to Troon North). I have a lot of respect for Troon North, and expect things to improve steadily.
But $85? Really? No way. Not yet. As others have said, the tee boxes are terrible. After a record rainy season, there simply is no excuse for these tee boxes. How hard is it to spread a little seed and keep golfers off a box for a while. It's not like there aren't options. On 2 for example, they moved the tee to a rarely used forward tee on the right. Think it would be better? Nope. Horrible.
What's worse these days is that they clearly don't have the landscaping budget they used to have, and perhaps not even the paltry budget that Casper Golf had. You WILL lose tons of balls and you WILL lose them within two feet of the cart path. You WILL lose them even if you had your eyes on the ball and tracked it into the junk. The "grass" is so long and unkempt that you stand no chance. And I'm not talking about really bad shots here. Just marginally offline shots that you should at least play or be able to drop as a lateral.
It's totally unfair and a waste of money. Greens are okay. Bunkers spotty but getting better, but if you like plaging the Bridges at Gale Ranch, then you;ll like this. Unfair and ultimately not fun. If you get stuck behind the legions of slow players (getting worse now), then it has almost nothing to recommend it. On the plus side, the food in the grill isn't bad.
very sad to hear. Hiddenbrooke used to be the best public course in the bay area 10 years ago, but seems to have gone down in the past 6 years.been down a long time I guess. I haven't played there for 6 years.
