You get what you pay for, awful
My experience here in the past has been fine, I always come in knowing it will be poor golf, but it will move at a fine pace and the people are super nice. Today, I was met with something different. The people were mean, I had my ball picked up from the middle of the fairway twice after a drive, and the pace of play was so horrid I couldn’t even stand to finish my round. I will never be giving my money to them again and I recommend you never take it there in the first place. There is much better value around Atlanta and I recommend you take your money to a better course and not this awful place.
3rd Generation of ATLien who plays Candler
This is a no-frills urban course with zero pretensions. You just go and play 9 holes without breaking the bank and get a good walk in. It keeps me sane and healthy, and I get to maintain my game as well. My grandfather and my father before me played there, and I feel connected to them as well. Hole's 2 & 3 are a challenge, but hole 9 is the hardest. You're hitting blind up a hill to a par 3. See if you can par it.
For some reason you ALWAYS send this survey before I have even played this course, It does not give me confidence in spending extra money with you
For some reason you ALWAYS send this survey before I have even played this course, It does not give me confidence in spending extra money with you, and you always ask me to check in the day before?
Fun but not fancy
Great value and fun but not a golfing “test”. Greens were slow and although mowed, not cleared. There are unavoidable muddy areas especially on holes 4 and 7. Very slow play due to a “teaching” session two groups ahead of us, but groups on either side of us were fun and friendly. Always a good value and fun times with family.
Perfectly average
Can’t beat it for the price - greens could use some work but better than expected. Definitely worth checking out.
The Candler Mystique
It was mid afternoon on a Saturday, and the August air in Atlanta was thick enough for the breaststroke. I begged off vacuuming and folding laundry for a few hours. I was alone on the first tee at Candler with foursomes ahead of me as far as the eye could see. It was going to be a long one. I pulled a hybrid into the gulley along the left side of 1 and hit the mandatory Candler 1st tee mulligan into the rough on the right. My wedge came up inches short and trickled down to the bottom of the Cliffs of Despair fronting the first green. I got up and down, though the greens were shaggier than David Hasselhoff’s chest hair. I parred 2, but then the rains came. A deluge. Animals marching by in pairs. I waited it out under a tree. When the rains broke, the course was empty. There was a serenity I had never felt, like earth and heaven had co-mingled. I parred 3 and 4 and was crossing over the muddy depression behind the fourth green when I saw a man standing under the canopy of trees. “Mind if I walk with you?” he said. “Not at all, Shivas,” I replied. He urged me to club up on 5 and I parred again. On 6, my well-struck 4 iron fade clipped a branch on the Tree of Life that stands majestically astride the fairway. I snarled at my misfortune and feigned at wrapping the club around the tree. “The Lord taketh away... but the Lord also giveth,” Shivas said, handing me an 8-iron. I pured it to 8 feet. Another par. Behind the 7th green, Bagger Vance leaned against the rail of the bridge. “Give you a hand?” He took my bag. Feeling buoyed, I laced a 3-wood down the middle; another up and down for par. With the two men ambling along with me, we approached the 8th tee. Another pristine 4 iron left me in the middle of the fairway. Lob wedge to 15 feet, par. I was even through 8. I’ve never been under par. Not ever. I wondered if this could be my day. We stood together on the 9th tee and gazed uphill at the top of the flag, lolling in a gentle late day breeze. Bagger winked at me. “This is your moment. This is all there is,” Shivas said, handing me the same 4 iron. I found my grip, took a deep, slow breath, waggled a few times... and swung. The ball exploded off my clubface, arcing high into the air toward the green... moving inexorably... right. A push. Into the trees. Surely it fell into the rough? No sign of it. I plunged down the hill, scraping my legs on twigs. There, at the bottom of the hill, in sight of Mary Gay Elementary School, was my Callaway. “I can get up and down from here,” I thought. I sized up the shot. I had an obstructed backswing, but gave it a fearsome hack. The ball moved 4 feet. I re-set and swung again, in the vague direction of the green. The ball sailed through the dense thicket and landed on the far edge of the fairway. I looked around. Shivas and Bagger were gone. I got up and down for a double bogey five. This was not to be my day.
And yet, in a strange way—a way that only those who have ever been fortunate enough to play a round at Candler Park—it was my day. It was my day, indeed.
Great bang for your buck
For 15 total pp, it’s hard to complain about candler park Gc. The tee boxes need love, as well as the greens, but they were far from the worst I’ve seen. Maybe put out sand at tee boxes, or move markers? Get their early for an easy 90 minute round - there are lots of new golfers so be prepared for that, however, feeling like you’re on a private course because of the enclosure is great.
