Collins Hill Golf Club
About
Collins Hills Golf Club is a little known course to outsiders, but it is a local favorite. The traditional parkland layout tumbles across a rolling terrain. The golf course features small, undulating greens and narrows fairways bordered by towering trees. The layout demands accuracy especially with the numerous sand bunkers that have been incorporated into the design. Several ponds and lakes are scattered across the course, coming into play on seven holes. The layout has its challenges but it is still gentle enough to accommodate a variety of different skill levels. Before playing, golfers can warm up on the driving range or utilize the other practice facilities. Collins Hills Golf Club's atmosphere definitely plays a role in the club's popularity, offering all of the amenities of a private club with a casual and friendly setting

Read this if you are thinking of playing here
I have never played here before and arrived exactly 20 minutes before my scheduled tee time. I have played thousands upon thousands of rounds of golf and have done so on well over 100 golf courses. I walked into the Pro Shop and the fellow behind the counter greeted me and I said that I had a tee time at 12:48 p.m. and gave him my last name. He looked at his tee sheet and clearly saw that it was a discounted GolfNow rate and his demeanor changed immediately. He said that he would get me out onto the golf course 10 minutes before the time and that I'd be paired up with the other players. Ok - that was in 10 minutes! This was baffling to me as I had never heard that before. "So what do I do for the next 10 minutes, go sit in my car?" is what I thought. He wasn't offering a cart or anything.
He knows as well so does every golfer in the world that I have gear that needs to be loaded onto a cart. Every other time I’ve ever played golf the attendant understands that my only need from him is to be shown to a cart. And we had this conversation - I'm asking "Can I have a cart key" and "If there are other players here that are in the same tee time group, where is one so I can put my gear on the cart?" If I’m the first guy they should give me a cart key or if there are other people there that I’m supposed to be paired with, then they should show me who the person is so I can put my gear on the cart. Instead, the awkwardness of being pushed away and back into my car is stinging. What an experience!
I arrived on purpose just in time to get my gear on cart and to hit a few putts and pitch the ball - that's it. So, the time is nearing, and it's 12:44pm. No one has come out and I'm supposed to tee off in 4 minutes. I'm already worried because there were reviews of a 5 hour round, and that's the last thing I want to be involved in - a 5 hour round at a goat rodeo.
So, I am standing there at the putting green in front of my golf bag with 3 minutes to go and someone pops out and hollers my last name and says "you're playing with those guys" to which he makes no gestures, so I'm supposed to figure out who "those guys are" I guess.
"What a sack of excrement this place is" is what I'm thinking. This is my very first impression of the place! So, I take it upon myself to find "other guys" and ask what their tee time is, and manage to get myself onto a golf cart that's already occupied. Ok. It's past 12:48pm, my tee time, and I'm just now on a cart with no knowledge of the course, etc.
I'm a real golfer so I can handle myself once I get a ball in front of me and near a tee box.
Here's my review of the golf course - It's super short and you have to have local knowledge to play well. Lots of cambered fairways, some hidden hazards, and small greens that are super duper slow.
There's nothing memorable about the golf course itself. Will I be back? I honestly don't know. I really don't know.
I honestly don't get the whole "Let's poo on our customers" vibe - it doesn't get them anywhere.
Hey Collins Hill,
Why don't you chill out on the whole greeting your players thing. You're not getting any style points!
Signed,
The World
A nice afternoon
My wife and I were I town on business and had time for a round. The course was a very pleasant surprise. The staff very knowledgeable of the course and its history and the course itself very enjoyable for both the serious and recreational golfer. I will definitely play it again when in town.
Pace of Play
Decent course for the money and it is in the best shape in probably the last 20 years. However, my biggest complaint remains pace of play. Played 9/9/17 and the round took 5 hours! We were behind a foursome who were taking forever and there was no ranger to make them speed up. It seems like every time I play this course we're stuck behind some group that plays way too slow. I'm all for newbies learning the game, but taking 10-12 shots to complete a par 4 is ridiculousl
Needs Work
Couldn't find yardage markers anywhere on the fairways and sometimes not on the tee boxes. No beverage cart service on a Saturday. Most traps were loaded with weeds and no sand. Cart paths on back 9 were dangerously crumbling. Fairways and greens were decent. Won't play this course again.
Very good course, some holes a little challenging but that's a good thing. Will go back in the future.
Value Course
Got a great deal on GolfNow. 2nd time playing the course. Course is in slightly above average condition. Tee boxes are in pretty good condition. The fairways are also in pretty good condition however dead patches of grass on the green were unsightly and sometimes affected roll on at least five of the greens. Also, I was told that due to the wet ground it was cart path only that day. The issue is that these were some of the worst cart paths I've seen in the metro area.
I played it on a Monday afternoon consequently the pace of play was not an issue. Its definitely a value course. Not willing to pay normal price to play here but would play again.
I am new to golf, and with only after 3 lessons I found Collins hill an excellent course.
Good Pace of Play, but course was dry and hard
I really wish they would take better care of this course as I enjoy the layout. Very dry, lot's of hard pan and bare spots. Some tee boxes so hard it was a struggle to get the tee in the ground. Several green had bare spots as well
It is worth the price
The course is in a fair condition, not the bunkers. For the hot deal, it is worth your money.
Enjoyable round
Friendly staff, clean facilities, challenging course. Tees, fairways and greens are in good shape. Only 17th green needs some work. Well placed shot selection is key on many holes. Varying elevations keep you challenged. Limited drinking water on the course so bring your own.
Bad
Course bad shape. Cart paths are very bad. Staff inside club house bad.
Fun course that should be better
I play about 25 different golf courses each year. This usually includes at least one round at Collins Hill. The course conditions are ok, but a significant renovation is needed. The staff seems to be making the most of what they have. My only negative maintenance observation was several trees that need to be removed or trimmed. Munis in locations with much smaller tax bases than Gwinnett country operate considerably better facilities. This includes a few in metro Atlanta.
Good and Fun course
First time I have played this course. With a couple of two holes, overall this course is in great shape. Bunkers could use more sand. However, we have had a lot of rain lately. The day I played was very hot, which may explain why there were not many people playing. Thus, the pace was great. I started playing around noon and was done by 3:35 Pm. This course has some challenging holes to improve your game, and some easy holes to keeps you excited. The staff was very friendly as well. Finally, I booked my tee time using Golf Now Hot Deals search engine, which is a great resource as you can find decent courses around the country and pay $20. Very hard to beat and complain when you are only spending $20 to play golf on Sunday afternoon.
Great Local Course
Great neighborhood course. It is conveniently located near my home and work, playing 9 on a week day after work is very enjoyable. Challenging enough to improve your game and easy enough to reward a good shot. The staff is always a treat, very friendly and sends you out on a positive note. Yes, it's not the perfect course, the cart paths are a little rough, the bunkers could use some more sand and on the weekends the pace of play can be better (more often then not, its white tee players hitting from the blues). The are other courses which have better accommodations, though very few have the charm of Collins Hills.
