Providence Club
About
Conveniently situated between Athens and Lawrenceville, the Providence Club has a scenic location stretching right along the Appalachee River that makes it feel much more like a getaway. The golf course has been considered one of northeast Georgia's best since opening in 1998. The layout takes advantage of the rolling terrain, incorporating elevated tees and uneven lies. The greens often feature slopes and undulations but they are fair and they roll true. They are also known for being excellently maintained. Mature trees frame many of the holes and there are several strategically placed bunkers lurking throughout. Water doesn't come into play too often but the elevation changes will provide plenty of challenges. The golf course is player friendly enough to accommodate a wide range of skill levels with a few tricky holes to keep the round interesting.

Quality, albeit slow, Sunday Round
This was certainly not my first time playing at The Providence Club, however it was my first time playing there on a weekend morning which I most likely will not do again anytime soon. Upon pulling up to the first tee we realized there was no starter on duty and the tee times had already fallen at only 8:45AM. Once we finally got out on to the course things picked up for a while until about hole 5, then it was relatively slow for the rest of the round. One issue which probably caused the slow play was the course being cart path only, though most of the holes were fine for carts to travel on the grass (some wet areas could have been simply staked off). We also only saw a ranger once during the entire round; if they had a ranger continuously traveling the course, I think that would've alleviated some of the pace issues.
Now on to the course itself. The greens at Providence were ok, but left a bit to be desired. They rolled fast but tended to bounce a lot, and they looked very thin in some areas. The fairways and rough were in excellent shape with tall pine trees lining many of the fairways. Some of the bunkers had a bit of wash out, but with the rain in the earlier weeks, that is to be expected.
All in all, Providence is a very enjoyable course to play during the week when the course is not packed. With a little more attention to pace of play, it would be a great weekend stop for the causal golfer.
The Tale of the Lost Greens
All in good shape except for the greens which seem to have not survived the winter very well. They were normally difficult but are now extremely difficult.
Noticable Improvement
There is a noticeable improvement in this course. The personnel were exceptionally nice, the course was in great shape (especially considering recent weather) and several subtle improvements on the course. We played with a couple of out-of-town friends. They were impressed and plan to play here when they return. Price was exceptional through GolfNow offer!
Weekday play
Great place to play, the staff is always friendly and the course was in good condition except for the greens. Once we get some rain and the greens get better it will be hard to pass on this course
Sunday March 6th
I have played here frequently in the past and will eventually return but not until the greens and fringe around the greens are back. The fringe is essentially just dirt and the greens were so covered in sand. I understand punching and rolling is an annual event but this was unknown and should be advertised.
Pace of play 4 hours, F&B as always great, $$ for the round no issue there. In the end putting surfaces will make or break a golf course there are too many places around to play.
Maybe try Providence again in late June this feels like 4-6 weeks to get those areas back in playing shape.
Needs work
The greens may have been the worst I have ever played on. The sad part was it didn't matter where the pin was.
Beware of greens
Played this course several times but first time since summer last year. They have completely lost the greens and they are in horrible shape for this course. They should have a warning for sure that the greens won’t be back for quite a while if at all this year. Mostly sand around the greens and can’t hit a reliable putt unfortunately. The rest of the course is really nice as usual but the greens ruined it for me this season here.
Nice course and excellent value on GolfNow. Greens recently airated so putting left a lot to be desired.
Overall I really liked the course but my only issue was the greens, they were not in the best conditions hopefully the next time will be better. They were really bumpy and not smooth. Overall I liked the course
Love the course and layout. Greens were not good though as they were somewhat bare and had green paint on them that would stain your hands.
Not that bad! Still Providence.
Wasn't as bad as previous reviews had mentioned. Looks like greens are being redone not sure what the stuff was but you can putt on it (rolls kinda fast at that). The fairways were still dormant as to be expected this time of year. I've played here numerous times and I trust that the staff here will have the course in good shape in the near future.
Greens are in trouble
Fairways were freshley plug aerated, greens were awful. I would have preferred to putt on the parking lot asphalt - at least I could have better judged the pebbles in the parking lot. When I marked my ball and put it back down, it would roll off the cracked scales.
Good old Providence
Great pace, great company, beautiful day. Just saying
The free are AWFUL!!!!
This was not the first time I've played here, normally I do enjoy this course but the greens were awful!!! They were painted and there was basically no grass on the greens, you could see some small patches here and there. That's the worst I've ever seen them and hope they get this problem addressed and fixed ASAP!!! Way too late in the season to have greens looking like this!!!!!!
Great course, good value
Course wasn’t in the best condition but it had also poured the night before and this time of year isn’t easy to keep up. Greta layout, greens were hard and fast, fairways were a bit soft. None of my drives rolled more than 2ft but still loved the course. Cart paths were a bit rough in places.
