Be the Ball Photo submitted by Penelopepapa on 12/05/2015
Never got a chance to play
They were out of carts before 10:30 am and had no answer when they would be available.
Tee times we’re running over 1.5 hours behind without any control if and when carts were coming in.
If a course cannot honor reservations on a busy day they should not accept them.
We did get a refund for the charges at the course but not our reservation fees.
Won't go back
Played Smoke Rise today (somewhat reluctantly, as I played here about a month ago and did not enjoy it).
We had the 11:30 tee time, but somehow they were not able to send us off until 12:30 because they were so short on carts. Obviously a problem, but to make matters worse, they were without range balls for the first 20-25 minutes of our wait. I've never seen a golf course run out of range balls and golf carts at the same time.
Whole course was backed up when we got out there because once they got carts they were just sending everyone out at the same time.
Course is not in great shape either. Apparently this place used to be really nice, but I am too young to remember that. The course plays pretty hard, but is frustrating because the tee boxes are horribly maintained and there are a lot of weeds in the fairways. Also, the bunkers are in pretty bad shape. Either hard as a rock or somehow full of water on a hot summer day.
Greens are okay. Will not be coming back here. I could see someone coming here to practice, but there is no reason to pay for 60$ to play here when there are so many better options around Atlanta.
First and last time playing smoke rise… Running an hour late on teetimes because some brain child decided to let all the members take single carts in the morning so there was none available for anybody else to use. The greens were in great shape otherwise the course is pretty torn up. Bunkers rock hard and some full of water.
Conditions were rough
Course didn’t appear to be in good shape outside of the greens. Love this place but haven’t seen it look like this ever.
Good conditions but some erosion problems
Challenging course with lots of dog legs and elevation changes. Greens were in great condition, some places on tee boxes and fairways suffering from erosion. Overall though good value and friendly staff.
Good Condition / Terrible Loop
The course was in good condition, for the money.
The greens were fine, the fairways for the most part solid, tee boxes looked like dog shhhhugar...
The staff were great, but my god was this the worst piece of land I’ve ever played on.
Super super gimmicky course. Play the same hole over and over again. Looping back and forth and up and down, not a challenging amount, but just plain stupid. Feels like they put a course on land it doesn’t belong on. Nice homes around the course makes me feel like it’s a country club for non golfers.
private course
First, it was nice to play a private course on Golf Now for a reasonable price. Then it was disappointing that the practice facility was closed for a clinic (the whole thing?) and the Pro Shop had once person who didn't care much for answering questions or explaining where anything was, e.g. more signs indicating where hole # 1 would be helpful.
The course was hard, as are most first time plays are, but it was interesting and very tactical (I used irons on the tee for 5 holes other than par 3's). The fairways were rock hard as were most of the bunkers which made me choose a different club than usual. The rain actually was welcomed since it softened the fairways somewhat. Never did get the greens since some were very slow and some were average.
I won't go into more but i was disappointed and most likely will notreturn.
Great day on the course.
course in great shape. Challenging, but fair and a fun course. Enjoy playing this course.
Excellent course.
Always enjoy this course. Friendly staff. Course in good shape.
Great, tough, but fair course
Another fun round at Smoke Rise. Classy course. No petty hassles. Just play golf. Always look forward to playing SR.
Just bad
I have played Smoke Rise 10-15 times and this was, by far, the worst. I wanted my cart so that I could wipe it down. The refused to bring a cart until my actual tee time. Not 15 minutes early, but at my tee time. That later mattered when we made the turn at 2:15 and they told us to pick up the pace.
The course was in horrible condition. There were weeds everywhere. Greens ranged from fair to great but the fringe/first cut were in need of serious attention. Tee boxes were in bad condition as well. If I managed to find myself onto a course for a mere $15 this would have been such an issue. Instead, I paid $60 including booking fees. In the past, I was able to pay something like $30 for green fees. This was a terrible value. To land the fairway and have you ball sit behind a clump of weeds 6 inches tall is unacceptable.
I would not be surprised if I learn that they are closing or shutting down soon. This used to be a nice weekend or holiday treat. I will not be back and advise others to stay away.
Fun Course but not in the best shape
Fun and challenging course but very poorly maintained (at least when we played on 5/24) . Very very very thin fairways . Greens were super fast and dry. A few had quite a bit of dead grass.
Some Tee boxes were not very well maintained.
I feel this round was over priced for the condition of the course compared to what else is available to book.
Great Layout
You will have to manage this course well. The best way to play many of the holes is with long iron off the tee. Ball placement is a must to score well. Bad shots will have you taking a drop. Manny dog legs left and right so just hit it towards the 150 mark and do not try to over power the course. You must be patient and trust your short game. Staff will not allow you to take cart to the parking lot, no worries because it’s a very short walk anyways. I look forward to playing this course again....
I just wanted to play golf
We teed off at 7:40am and it looked as we were the first out. The sprinklers were on as we putted on the 1st green, 2nd green and then the ground keeper said he got a late start but had to water the greens. I said okay, not knowing the sprinklers would be going on every hole even the 18th when we finished at 10:45am. The front desk said nothing he could do, not even give us a rain check; it was like it was raining on every green with water puddles and everything. I asked to speak with someone who could, he stated it was the course pro, who was gone for the day. I asked for his card, but he could not find one...hmmm? The golf pro, when I finally was able to talk to him, said in so many words "Too Bad". He said, "we did not do intentionally". Really, if you did, I would think something else. I play golf to get away and enjoy the outdoors, I did not enjoy my round. The course is a mess starting with the tee boxes, fairways are hard and the ball runs through them a lot. The rough on most holes leads straight into high weeds that sometime hangs over the rough. Not a well kept course. The guys handling the carts and the starter were very nice. Oh, the carts have hard to set brakes and this is a very hilly course. I do not plan on going back there to play. Not upset with no one there, but we have to treat each other with respect in these tough times. That goes both ways, the golfer and the golf course's staff. Don't like the course just move on. That's what I am doing after this review. Enjoy your rounds and be safe.
Will not play course again
This was not my first time playing Smoke Rise for each time I have played the course it has gone down hill like many of the steep cart paths that they warn you to go slow on. They have you to sign for a cart that the parking breaks are hard to set or don't work at all. I asked about the service of the carts before I signed, but got a response that had an attitude and that I knew wasn't true. On Thursday May 14th, 2020, me and a friend played there alone with the sprinklers on every hole. I started taking pictures of the sprinklers running after I realized they have been on since we started our round. We were approached by a friendly grounds person on the second hole, who apologized for the sprinklers. He said he got a late started with watering and it should have been finished. I informed the person with the attitude at the front desk and it was a too bad response. I asked if I could talk to someone else, he stated I had to talk to the course pro, who had the same type of response when I talked to him two days later. The course pro stated that it was a technical issue when the grounds person said he got a late start. I wasn't upset, for I had made up in my mind that I would not play the course again even if it was free. I wanted to see how they would respond when we should be caring about each other in times like we are having. THE COURSE IS IN BAD SHAPE....tee boxes are mostly sand or dirt, the ball is constantly below or above your feet helping with thin or fat shots. The ball constantly run through the fairway and the so call rough heads straight into the high, thick and hilly brush that overhangs the rough on most holes. Don't hit the first ball you get to because it's a lost ball from the other fairway that the golfer couldn't find or care to find. I know I said a lot, but I did not enjoy golf that day. Thanks for reading.
