The Good, Bad & The Ugly
Good: The course is expansive after the 5th hole; other players were friendly and didn’t take it out on each other because of the wait; and the staff at cart return were super friendly and helpful.
Bad: They overbooked players; bunkers were ridiculously pathetic, driving through neighborhoods while dodging kids playing; poor cart management; only 1 bathroom, and the cart paths were like driving after an earthquake.
Ugly: A staff member said we have “two choices”. Either start early or give up our cart…even though our tee time was 20mins away and we were stacked behind 4 golf carts waiting at hole 1.
Bad experience
I've played this course back in my beginner days (2011), i've withnessed the transition from below average to a great choice to play weekday or weekends. I appreciate the steps of progression, by having a marshalls present.
On a saturday morning 4 average players (88-97 score) 37 degrees, started @ 9:20, was on the 12th hole @ 11:50........why is the marshall asking us to pick it up? -I get skill levels/pace
, but that experience was unwarranted. If this is a direction of ensuring a flow, I highly recommend utilizing a cart sheet to determine when carts are launch for a round, so unwanted conversations don't occur.
Overall Southland has evolved as 1 of Atlanta's best places to play, so let's not spoil that growth with bad regulation of the course,
First and last time playing here
Tee boxes are 1/10, Fairways are 2/10, Greens are 5/10, layout is 8/10, golf carts are 1/10. The only reason this isn’t being rated a 1 star is because of the layout. If it was taken care of, this could be an awesome course. Really cool layout and holes. Staff is fairly nice. The other golfers (the members) were rude. Took 5.5 hours for 18 holes. Would NOT recommend and will not be going back.
Not bad, not bad at all.
This course has some challenging holes. Could use some sand in the traps, most were unplayable. No amenities to speak of, but that’s ok.
Hilly terrain and slow greens
You definitely wanna be firm with your club and shot selection. It’s also December so weather was very influential. Great bang for the buck though.
Good Value
Have played here for years, and the course condition is improving.
I wish they would do a Youth on Course deal for junior players like Heritage and Smoke Rise CC.
Southland
I ended up playing as a single and played just under 3 hours. Thanks to the twosome and two foursomes that let me play through. I played the white tees and some of the tee boxes were grassless. It's almost like they have not been moved for a couple of years. The blue tees and gold tees were all in good shape. The real issue for me was the greens. I understand this is the time of the year when the leaves start falling. The grass itself was in excellent shape for putting but it seemed like nobody had taken a blower to the greens in at least 2 weeks. Not only were there leaves but also little leaf pods, and little twig scraps. There were only about 2 or 3 greens without this problem. On 2 of the greens, I was about 3 feet off the green and I had a really difficult finding my ball. The fairways were pretty clear of the leaves but the rough just off the fairway was difficult. Some of the fairways had some really bald spots. I really liked the layout. There were some holes where you had blind shots.
Terrible Conditions
Greens were so long, ball rolled like it was in US OPEN rough, leaves all over 50% of the greens, I mean you couldn’t even putt for birdie with all the leaves on the greens, fairways were had as a dick, rough hasn’t been cut in 3 weeks, tee boxes had NO grass on them. Total waste of a day.
Pleasantly surprised
It has been difficult to find a course in Atlanta that is public and cost friendly. This course exceeded expectations for the price point compared to others. I will be looking forward to playing here again.
Decent course
The course of in decent shape. a few bare tee boxes and bunkers need some attention. Pace of play was ok once we got started. Didn't get going until 30 minutes after tee time, which is a bit annoying because nothing prevented us from going out except the starter and his regemented cart alignment process.
