A course so ratchet it's not even in the GHIN handicap system
The pros:
Good layout, decent greens, friendly staff, new carts
The cons:
Bunkers are garbage. Fairways are hard has a rock. Tee boxes are worn out. They haven't moved the pins in a year and as a result holes are collapsing (it does make putting easier), cart paths are crap. No drinking water on the course, no beverage cart, and the turn is nowhere near the clubhouse. Fresh cut grass everywhere so you can easily lose your ball in the fairway. Basically what everyone else has said in other reviews.
Also, don't bother trying to enter your score into the GHIN handicap system as it doesn't recognize this as a "golf course." I can see why.
So ratchet it's not even in GHIN
As everyone else has already said, it could be a great course.
Good layout, decent greens (not great, but decent)
Fairways always hard and fast with very little grass. Tee boxes terrible. Sand traps are considered a free drop. New carts will be destroyed by the terrible paths and somehow, fairways as well.
Pity no one will put any money into it. Could be great.
Over priced
The bunkers are hard and full of grass. The course does not serve alcohol, but there are beer cans scattered in the woods throughout the course. For a cost of $63 per round, it is not worth the fee. I pay less at much nicer courses, why is this so expensive, with no attention to the details?
Review
Course is in terrible shape, impossible to get a tee in the ground as well as no water stations anywhere on the course. One of the lower end courses in the Atlanta area.
Fun course but needs some work...
Just a couple changes and this could be a much better course. First, the cart path - there are a lot of spots where the path cannot be driven on. The course is taking the punishment for that as people drive around those spots. Second, the rough - I lost several "in play" balls just off the fairway because the rough is so high and the grass clippings are sitting on top. This should be maintained better. Lastly, cleanliness and functionality - there's no turn at the clubhouse. If you know this going in, it's fine. But, you expect to have certain things on a course like that - water and a bathroom. Bathrooms were out of order, water stations were empty, and several trash cans were overflowing. I've played here several times and it has always been this way. Ultimately, I will go back, but wish some things would improve.
They need to provide water coolers on the course for the 90 degree rounds in July and August
Great Greens
I played at Southland after a long delay at the airport due to weather. However, when we finally arrived at the course, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The Greens were in EXCELLENT CONDITION and we had a great 18 holes of golf.
Neglictedt
The course has potential, but it’s neglected and run down. Wooden steps and bridges are in poor condition. Trash was not emptied and overflowing. No water on the course (9 doesn’t end near the clubhouse), so bring plenty of water and etc to stay hydrated. No Marshal and pace was so very slow. You’re not allowed to have a cart until your entire group is present. No bag drop. Bunkers are not kept up, they are not raked, most have grass growing in them and debris like pine cones is plentiful. Many tee boxes were without grass and very hard- good luck getting the tee in the ground. $10 for a very small bucket of range balls (irons only) I was disappointed..
Amazing Greens…BUT!!!!!
The Greens are the best that I’ve ever seen them. The fairways are very good. However everything else is trash. The clubhouse is sparse. No shirts, shoes, balls or food. The signin area only has refrigerated drinks and snacks. Wow, this is as bad as I’ve seen it! There is no water on the course or cart girls. Bring your own liquids in the cart before you tee off. Nearly 100+ degrees and not a drop of water!!! The tee boxes, sand traps and cart paths are just plain awful.
Lastly there were not enough carts, as players were waiting for us to finish.
My takeaway…decent playing experience on the course, especially the greens, but not a place to invite a guest if you want to impress!!! A lot of potential if the owners invest more in the course.
Quick Round in the Heat
I had a Great Time. Last Minute Tee-Time for a Quick Round
- It was HOT...🥵 • Big negative is - no watering / cooler location on the course (something simple and easy to help the guest during the summer)
- The green were soft and spongy, but in GREAT shape
Overall A Great Experience
Horrible In Every Way
No food or drinks (even water) to purchase though it is 90+ degrees outside. Course layout does not bring you back to the clubhouse after nine. Driving range does not allow you to hit anything over 200 yards. Greens are extremely long that the grain pushes the ball in random ways. No sand in the bunkers and weed filled; didn’t even have rakes. Rough has so many weeds that it makes it impossible to find a ball even with a good shot. Fairways are half dirt. 30 minutes late teeing off because they did not have enough carts. All of this for a $72 tee time.
Best shape ever
I have never seen the course in better shape. The greens roll smooth (a little slow) but true. Perfect shape. Fairways are nice and lush. I never once got a barren lie, the grass was nice and fluffy. Rough just long enough to cause a little problem but nothing major. Some tee boxes are a bit overgrown but no real issue. I have never seen Southland in better shape.
The cart path is challenging but who cares, the fairways, greens, and lack of a crowd plus the layout make up for it.
The person checking me in was super nice. I was late for my tee time and he worked me right in. I saw only five people on the entire course. Finished in two and a half hours.
A completely pleasant surprise.
Great trip from South GA
Played while visiting Atlanta. We enjoyed the layout and views of Stone Mountain and ponds. Course staff was friendly. Only issues were: only 1 bathroom at the turn and it was locked (difficult for female players), weeds and rock in the sand bunkers so they needed attention, three groups of 4 in front of us were playing slow and no marshall to push them or let others pass (but that is common everywhere).
Good greens
The greens are in great shape the tee box areas need attention.
