Annbriar Golf Course
About
Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo is one of the top 10 golf courses in Illinois. The course was built on rolling farmland covered with native wild grasses. The layout eases you into the challenges with a links-style front nine that is less demanding than the back nine. The fairways are invitingly wide but if you miss them, you'll be faced with thick fescue. The back nine takes advantage of the surprisingly undulating terrain, which is unexpected since just across the river the land is almost totally flat. Annbriar's signature hole, the par-4 11th, was voted the best hole in the St. Louis area. From an elevated tee, golfers enjoy a stunning view as they play down into a valley. This hole is also the no. 1 handicap hole on Annbriar Golf Course.

Great as always
Best public course in metro area. Would put it up against several private courses.
Best St. Louis Course
The best public course in the St. Louis metro area.
Hidden Gem
This course is truly a hidden gem, and well worth playing. You may not be happy with your score as the rough in penal, but you’ll be glad you went as it’s a fun and beautiful course.
Outstanding
The course was in great condition. The layout is challenging, but very fun to play.
Great layout and very good conditions
The front nine is links style and the back nine is through hills and trees. It is a stunning course with the fairways and green immaculate. The ruff is thick and in good condition. The traps are playable yet not of the same pristine condition as the rest of the course.
Some Rough Areas On The Course, Pace Of Play Unacceptable
Annbriar has a few rough areas mostly on the front nine. Tee boxes 1 & 7 & fairways 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 & 9. Now they are having issues in the fairways on 14 & 16. Left side of fairway 14 has some bad erosion. Looks like they are going to lay now sod on some of the tees on 13 & 17. Seems like they should lay sod in the rough areas of the fairways. The rough areas will not ruin your round but it just takes away from the aesthetics of a beautiful golf course. The greens are excellent and the rough is solid and dense.
There was no ranger and pace of play was unacceptable. Took 5:10 to play. Many times, 2 groups on a hole.
Annbriar now has bottled water in coolers by the 4th and 13th green. There was no water in the cooler on the 13th green.
Annbriar is still a great course and you should play it. Just get an earlier tee time, so pace of play is not so much of an issue.
Annbriar's Conditioning Is Near Perfect
We started on the back nine and after that nine was completed, I made the comment that was the best conditioned public course I've ever played. Then you play the front nine, overall the conditioning is good too - but not quite as good as the back nine.
Several fairways have a few bad patches but they are getting better (holes 5, 6, 8 & 9). A couple of tees had some bare spots (holes 1, 7).
Looks like they topdressed the greens recently and the greens were firm. One of the best things about firm greens - hardly any ball marks. Then the greens don't get beat up. The rough is the most dense you will find on a public golf course.
They also have coolers with bottled water on both nines. I would like them to use different colored flags for front, middle and back. I can't think of any other courses that use one a single colored flagstick, like Annbriar does.
We paid $58 for the senior weekday rate.
Beautiful layout
Fairways are spectacular. Gorgeous and challenging course!
Annbrair Is Worth Playing But Fairways Need Some TLC
Don't get me wrong, Annbriar is still worth playing. However, their fairways are preventing them from getting their customary 5-star rating. Their are numerous GUR white outlines in the fairways. Holes with fairway issues are 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 10 & 13. Hopefully, when it turns warmer, they will re-sod the bad areas with zoysia sod and mark them to keep carts off the areas.
The rough is the thickest and most consistant rough you will find on a public gold course. All the greens were in good shape.
A couple of changes you will notice at Annbrair. They have started using red clay on some of the walking entrances from the cart path toward the greens. Hole 12, in the large depression off to the right of the fairway - they have removed the group of trees. Also, on Hole 13, they have removed the bushes at the cart path turnaround by the green. Gives those under the pavilion unrestricted view of the 13th hole.
Hidden Gem!
Fun track with challenging greens and elevation changes. Best value of the dozens of courses I have played in the last 5 years. Super friendly and attentive staff and welcoming members.
