In great shape right now
The course was a little dry during the summer but now that the autumn rains have started the conditions couldn't be better. Fairways are even and smooth, greens are a little slower than "Oakmont fast" and run true. I've played this course many times over the past few years and the course keeps getting better.
The course is challenging but nowhere near impossible. Most holes have some sort of interesting feature that keeps it from becoming "hit the ball, follow, hit the ball again" There are a good distribution of doglegs, bunkers and trees to keep it from being a cakewalk. The neighborhood surrounding the course is old and gives the course a somewhat dated feel but the surrounding hills and water features are beautiful.
Monday is a good day for Oakmont
Great day for golf. Sunny, warm, course very open, less than four hour round.
good course, great deal, super nice people
This is a fun course. The fairways are pretty wide open, good for someone at my level. The 15th hole is just amazing! This is one of the most stunning holes I've played. Well worth the trip and everyone is nicer, golf is cheaper and the the crowds are smaller. What's not to like? Except for #15, there is nothing exceptional here but it's a good fun course.
Disappointing
We booked through golf now and because of that we weren't informed that the front nine were closed therefore played the back nine twice.. No discount for that. However apart from that, the course was in very poor condition. Some really bad lies on the fairways and poor bunkers.
Would not hurry back to play here.
Great for the money
Course was great condition, greens even better. Walked the course, easy walk. Overall Oakmont West is great
Great Greens!
I was very impressed by the condition of the course, and especially the greens. Keep up the good work.
Great greens
Front 9 was awesome, back 9 had fairway issues but all the greens were in great shape for this time of year!!
Course is playing very well.
Oakmont has had it's low periods, but things are looking and playing very nice. Fairways are green, and the greens are really groomed and rolling well. Bunkers are not perfect but playable. The rough will make you think of keeping you shots on the fairway. Beautiful views of the surrounding hills.
Oakmont West
Overall good condition, greens very good, but a fair amount of long& wet grass and ground under repair in the fairways and near the greens.
Oakmont West
We had a great tint playing and the green fee was quite low. Considering California is in a drought, the course was in surprisingly good shape.
Good deal, but slow play
Oakmont's west course is a great deal and a fun track to play. The course was in nice shape, albeit too wet in many areas, and a huge improvement over a year ago. It is nicely designed layout, challenging but fair and good for all skill levels.
Problem is you need 6 hours in order to finish. We started a full 30 minutes after the preceding group and enjoyed the first four or five holes, then play came to a halt. Once we made the turn, the wait on every hole was so painful we quite after the 13th hole.
I'm guessing they need a Course Marshall who will lay down the law on the slow play, even if it's their Oakmont buddies holding things up.
I agree with your comment about the slow pace. Unfortunately it's become a given and not just Oakmont. I haven't seen or heard a Marshall ever telling a group to pick up the pace at any golf course in the last few years. Nor have I heard a group ask if you would like to play through when it's obvious there pace of play is much slower than ours.
A Marshall told us not to long ago that he had told a group to speed up a bit, that group complained to management who then told the marshals to never tell a group to speed up.
Which is unfortunate as pace of play has become a huge problem at most courses.
fairway and greens
course in good conditions; late start (1 hr) due tournament.
average but slow
Slow play--other players use a lot of strokes-not good for my 8 handicap. Many areas need sprucing up to make the surface playable and get water to the dry areas. Greens and bunkers are good.Too many houses lining the course that dumbs down the feel of a unique golf course.
Good times
Hard to believe that there was standing water during summertime amidst a drought. Other than that it was great.
Oak mint west
Nice course with enough challenge for most!
If up in Sonoma county it's worth a visit!
Course in great shape
Greens are in great shape although rolled a bit slow, maybe being left longer to conserve water. Fairways in better condition than most courses.
Great course but...............
Rest course lots of fun, but after our 4 the hole the batterers died in the cart. It's in the details people make your carts are charged before sending them out.
Course needs maintainance
Grass needs to be cut. Greens very slow.also the fairways were dry with bare ground spots.bunkers need new sand.
Oakmont West
The course used to be in excellent shape all the time. I had heard that it was in bad shape last winter, but in the middle of golf season - summer? It's a shame because it was a favorite for many years. I'll not be going back until rumors of better conditions.
Are you sure you're talking about Oakmont West? 15 is a long flat par 5 with a slight dogleg but other than one of the largest greens on the course (40 yards wide and 30 yards deep) it's quite unremarkable. The 16th is a short, picturesque par 3 over water with a bunker protecting in front and oaks ringing the back. 17 is a real challenge with water running the entire length of the hole on the right, a pretty pond 250 yards from the teebox and a bunker dead in the center of the fairway 50 yards in front of the green. Plenty of fun on that hole!
