Fun times at the AGC!
The course was in good condition for the time of year and pace of play was outstanding for me teeing off at 10 on a Saturday. The greens played surprisingly fast.
Asheville Municipal
Terrible terrible. Course was in awful condition. They should pay us to play this course. Never again
Great
Great service. Most players enjoy playing there. Rates are affordable and allow seniors to play who are on a limited income due to the higher cost of living. You can usually find someone to join the group when you show up by yourself.
Slow
We had a 1:12 tee time. Didn’t get off until 1:50. Finished the front at 4:10. Played 10-13 on back and gave up because of lack of light. I know it’s December but the course was like playing a cow pasture. Charged $20 for rental clubs that did not have a 3, 4 or 5 iron. Clubhouse was closed by the time we finished 13.
Front 9 and Back 9 as different as can be
This course has a very flat front 9 that is located in kind of a bog with drainage that has outlived its useful lifespan. The city, I think, is working on this. I played the front 9 about a month prior to playing the full 18, and I was very underwhelmed. The front 9 sit in a flat lowland that was very damp and full of insects. I felt like I was playing in a toilet, as it was a little stinky as well. I had read about the back nine, so I made sure to come back and I was very glad that I did. The back nine is an intriguing trek up into the hills of Asheville and are nicely nestled in a very established neighborhood. There is a lot of elevation change and some very unique fairways (10 and 11) that feel as if they had been cut by a glacier. If you play nine, I’d highly recommend starting on the back. The course is a bit scruffy in places and the starter seemed a little salty (but the group ahead of me had a fivesome with only 2 bags of clubs, so I kind of feel for him on this muni). Snack bar is just that - a snack counter - and the indoor staff were pleasant enough. The clubhouse is in the best tradition of vintage public courses - it feels like it was built during the depression and last updated in the 70’s (in a good way). It feels like a piece of history. Aside from the front nine drainage, I don’t think I’d change a thing.
National Treasure
This course is a National Treasure given its history. It should be treated as such It’s not. The golf carts with balding tires, taking brake off will break your neck. The cart paths are dangerous. Sink holes on the course. Greens were almost PERFECT and for November fairways were not bad. I understand is. A Muni but the mgmt company needs to invest more money. Great day with my son.
Abysmal
The course itself could use a little(lots) of love. The greens were in decent shape(of the 13 I putted on). That’s about where the positives end. The pace of play was dismal. It took 3 hours to play 12 holes...the course was beyond backed up, with either over booking, or with whatever happened, but it seems to happen every time I attempt to play there. I’d like to say it’s a good value for the money, but if you have 5-6 hours of nothing to do but be frustrated by waiting 10 minutes or more between every shot, it’s a huge waste of time and money, however little it might be.
