The par 71 features hole #12, touted as "the hardest par 3 I ever designed" by Pete Dye Photo submitted by u000003790453 on 09/20/2019
Fashion show
Not knowing that an "open collar" golf shirt was required ( despite having a Jordan Speith UA mock neck) on... On top of JSpeith golf pants, which were also questioned, it was a great round of golf. Maybe if they would worry more about making you feel welcome instead of publicly embarrassing you in the club house. It would have been a better experience. P.S. Should have seen some of the accepted golf outfits. OMG! Will return, and wear what want too.
Aerated and sanded greens
Aerated and sanded greens Made putting conditions very poor. No starter or coordination of groups off 1st tee. Fairway Bermuda grass still dormant and many muddy areas.
Normally a great course but not yet this season. Staff seemed uninformed and disinterested compared to previous visits. Another Covid excuse for downsizing
Wet Wet Wet
Too wet to enjoy. Drainage is horrible, played out of mud most of the day. Lost a couple balls to plugs.
Amazing place
One of the best courses in NC. Great value and beautiful course!
Great Time
Well manicured course! Even in the winter time! This Houstonian will be back.
Baller-to-Bogey: The Cardinal Review
December has been a month with sunny, cold and wet weather. I finally found the chance to play this Pete Dye gem. Located in Greensboro, The Cardinal is one of the few McConnell Group courses that isn't completely private.
The layout is tough, the greens are tough, no question about that. This par 71 course can play upto 7,000 yards. Of course I would do no such thing, so we played the white tees at 6,000 yards. This Pete Dye track has a great variation in hole placement. Based on the handicap it goes: (front) 7,17,9,13,1,11,5,15,3 (back) 12 16,10, 18, 8,2,14,4,6.
My favorite hole had to be #11, a 325 yard, downhill par 4. If you have ever played Oak Hollow GC, there is a hole that has a similar layout. The approach is very intimidating as you have water on left, right and behind, as well as sand encasing all sides.
All the the greens sit up. If you landed you ball short or on the edge, it was surely going to roll back. There is a lot of sand on this course. Be prepared to play out of it. There is a green side bunker at the practice facilities. Be sure to get a feel for it, before you get on the course.
Pros: This is an awesome course. The price is very reasonable, especially for a course of its magnitude. The practice area is nice and they use high quality range balls. The staff there was very friendly and accommodating.
Con: When it's wet, it is really wet. A portion of the course sits down in a flood plain, so whenever there is alot of rain in a short amount of time, the course feels it hard.
I have really lost my game during the month of December. It was never anything great to start with, but I've been playing bad bad. I shot well over 100 and I only had 1 par on the day and 1 bogey.
Excellent course
Fun course with difficult raised greens. Great condition for this time if year and the greens were smooth. Couldn't get around one slow group likely due to a language barrier but still able to finish before dark and didn't start until 150. Staff at club house were great as were the tacos!
Great course
Rained the night before and into the morning, but the Cardinal didn't disappoint! 5 stars again!
Perfect round
Great round in beautiful conditions. Loved hitting a 6 iron just past the flag on the difficult par 3 12th? Only downside was cart path only!
Tough but fair
Weather conditions were what caused me to give it a 4 star.
We played 18 in under 3 1/2 hours.
Greens were quick for a wet day.. I would play the course again
Outing
Staff was rude He though He was above the World! I made the mistake of wearing jeans but I had a nice shirt! There was very few people playing and nothing special going on and He commenced to inform me that I could not play in jeans . They were nice jeans not old and worn out! I So I really wanted to play and so I went home and changed and came back. I got tthere and had about 45 minutes until my tee time and I asked him could he just let me have a bag of balls to hit on the range on the house for my mistake of wearing jeans and He told me that if I hadn’t ask He might have . Rude!! My tee time was at 12:10 so I payed for my range balls and then he told me that He had to move my tee time to-12:20 and that I would be playing by myself!! I really should have left at that point and now I sitting at home stewing and I see several more bad reviews about the rude staff!!! I wish that place luck! Times are tough!!
First time out!
It was my first time out and I made the mistake of wearing a pair jeans! My bad but it was not busy and The Guy wouldn’t let me play no if and or butts. I was wearing a nice shirt. It was a Tuesday for crying out loud!! Nobody was there! I understand rules but really!!! $ 4 for a soda on top of that. The place is overpriced forsure!
