Golf Advisor: Top 25 Most Improved U.S. Golf Courses (2024 #13)
Reviews
Almost Fantastic
Fairways were immaculate. Cool course layout, hilly elevation changes and doglegs. Only negative was the greens were aeriated about 10 days prior so they were slow with some rough spots. But in maybe a week this will should be all around 5-star course.
Good Overall Trac
Overall great. Loosing some of greens, bt very puttable.
Course is Great, Staff was not
I want to start by saying, the course itself is really good. This was my third time playing here, and I thought it was in great shape all three times. The fairways are pristine, and though some of the greens have some significant burnt out spots, they are still playable. The value of this course has made it well worth it, to me, to drive about an hour from North Raleigh to play.
However, I will not be returning for a while, because my most recent experience was almost unbelievable. As a group of four, we made it through three holes in 45 minutes (4.5 hr pace). At the fourth tee, we were approached by a staff member and asked to increase our pace because we were going to cause a log jam with the groups behind us. We found this a little strange because their was still a full hole between us and the closest group behind, but we increased our pace a bit. We made it through the front without any other issues, but at the turn, things got more frustrating.
Despite finishing nine holes in two hours, we were approached by another staff member at the 10th tee and asked to wait for the group in the 9th fairway to play through. We politely protested saying we weren't playing slow, so this didn't make sense. It was explained to us that the group behind was FIVE members and were assured "they play very fast". We unwillingly waited, but this group then decided to make a stop at the clubhouse, understandably, before making the turn. At this point, we were allowed to continue playing, and we hoped this would be the end of it.
Unfortunately, the back nine turned into one of the least enjoyable nine holes of golf I have played. The staff member that asked us to let the group of five play through, proceeded to follow us around the course for the entirety of our last nine holes. Golf is a hard enough game when you don't feel like you are being watched, and the staff made us incredibly uncomfortable. On top of that, the group behind us was never in a position where they had to wait for us for more than about a minute, until maybe the last hole or two.
Due to this experience, I have no plans to return any time soon. While I will credit the staff with being polite in the way they spoke to us, I found their requests of us on the course to be rude and in bad taste. This is very disappointing, because I do like the course. However, with plenty of courses closer by, I would rather play somewhere that doesn't rush my group when we play their course in less than four hours.
NC Fun
Enjoyed the course. Good greens and excellent pace of play. Course staff was cordial and knowledgeable.
Great course
Track was in good condition. Friendly staff. Price not to bad.
Great spot
Fairways greens and tee boxes are in tremendous shape. Greens roll a little slow but hold well. Great par 3’s
Greens were rolling nicely
Played on Monday afternoon with a friend and got around in 3.5 hours. Course is in good shape for this early in the season.
Good Value for a Saturday
Easily booked online on a Saturday @ 12 noon. Check-in was easy and pace of play was great.
Greens were fast and fairways were in good shape for winter golf.
Great course picturesque views
Course is in great condition and was not over booked, will play there again!
Where is the staff?
Memorial day is a busy golf day. Checking in was uncomfortable, i was not greeted just stared at until I spoke. No starter, people were going off whatever tee they wanted which slowed us greatly when we reached the back 9. We were hit into multiple times, a couple of them by kids who were bouncing all around the course playing holes multiple times and jumping through holes in tibget in front of groups. No ranger was ever seen. Then there was the issue around the greens, where you could be 5 ft from the green on the "fringe", bit was hitting off of bare ground with rocks all over. Never coming back, highly disappointed.
We are sorry to hear about your experience at the CCJC. We are currently in the process of hiring new staff, and they are still being trained on how to approach and talk to customers. We have a starter, but he was on the course handling pace of play issues. We are disappointed to hear about the kids bouncing around the course like that, and that issue has been addressed.
OK Round -Rangers don't need to be so inaccurately pushy
Not busy, no back ups, but rangers wanted to make sure we were not holding anyone up and we weren't but they non the less continued to keep watch and be ever present. I don't understand this.
Great staff but way overpriced
The staff could not have been more friendly and the driving range was great, but for $67 for 18 this course has lost its mind. The greens are covered in weeds, the fairways are spotty, and the rough is nonexistent. In parts the rough is just clay and rocks. If this course were in Wake County you’d pay $55 on a weekend at most. If they fixed it up it could be a great track.
We are sorry to hear about your experience at the CCJC, but your group was asked on the first tee to keep up with the group in front of you. When you were spoken to on the fourth hole, you were already 2 holes behind, so that's why you were asked to pick up the pace. We had 2 groups of members, who were both playing fivesomes, and by #10 both groups had caught up to you, and you were still 2 holes behind the group in front of you. We asked your group on #8 to place any food orders on the next tee, that way it would be ready for you at the turn. Your group spent 10 minutes getting your orders, so we are not sure if this was done or not. Our job, as rangers, is to ensure pace of play is kept to our advertised 3 and a half hours, and that everyone has an enjoyable round of golf.
