Southern Pines Golf Club
About
Southern Pines Golf Club boasts a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best courses in North Carolina. The diverse layout will please traditionalists while also rewarding creative shot-makers. Originally opened in 1906 as a nine-hole course, it was later expanded to a full 18 holes in 1910. At 6,300 yards, the golf course is short by today's standards, but it will definitely test all of your shot-making skills. The course requires everything from bump-and-runs to tricky tee shots that favor accuracy over distance. There are a variety of ways to play each hole, making strategy a key element to doing well. The rugged and beautiful terrain provided by the North Carolina Sandhills is the perfect setting for golf. Not only are the surroundings lush and scenic, the rolling landscape offers a bevy of natural hazards.

Best Value in Pinehurst
This is a classic Donald Ross design which hasn't changed much at all from the original layout. As such, it is short by modern standards, but will certainly still challenge even the best players from the back tees. Course conditions are good (better than most public courses), but you can find better conditions elsewhere in Pinehurst (for 3 to 4 times the price). Pace of play was slow, but we were a threesome playing behind at least three foursomes, who appeared to be on a golf trip. Greens are still bent, which is becoming a rarity in the Sand Hills, and given the heat of the week, were a little slower than normal.
Nice layout
I was in the Southern Pines area and wanted to play a round of golf. I checked out other courses in the area and this looked like the best value and I wasn;t dissapointed. The greens were in good shape, the fairways and first cut were in just cut, a little dry so there was a lot of roll. The only thing I would like to see improved were the sand traps. They were inconsistant, some wet and firm and others too much sand.
Great place
The app is very easy to use and we enjoyed the savings. Course was very nice and the staff was as well.
Not worht the money
I really wanted to like the course first time playing in the sandhills region and on the positive, the course layout is pretty decent with a strong set of par 3 (strongest feature) but course is just shabby! greens had pace and took some spin but too may bare patches, fringes were awful - so inconsistent - fairways bare and things like sprinkler heads unkempt (nearly lost 2 balls in them) and missing yardage numbers
Just because its in the same zip code as other courses doesnt mean you can charge the same without matching condition.
this is a $50 green fee course at max!
Rough around the edges but very good for our level of play. Wide open fairways, not too much sand trouble, approachable greens. For the money and the challenge no complaints.
Southern Pines
Great old school Sandhills course - I play it every time I come down to painehurst. Love the course.
Wonderful, classic Donald Ross design
I have absolutely fallen in love with this course. This is a challenging course without the tricked-up holes that many courses have now. This is true golf.
Last minute golf
We arrived in the area around 2:30 for an event later in the evening at Sandhills college. Stop in on a whim and inquired if my wife and I could get in 18 holes. Older gentleman at the counter was non commital but declared cart had to be in at 5pm. Younger man said it doesn't get dark until 5:30 and he would gladly wait on us. Course played great and we played fast. Very enjoyable round. Thank you
Great Course
This is a great course in great shape. Elevation changes and undulating fast greens make this course challenging to all golfers. Great halfway house! We would definitely return.
Hillbilly
Great classic Donald Ross course. Golf cart parking brake did not work properly. Course was in very good condition.
great greens
For the money course was a bargain. Donald Ross greens were a challenge
Good course
The course was very wet, we had tons of rain prior to play. It was still a great course.
Shh....Don't tell Anyone
Wonderful, Wonderful Donald Ross Layout. Not a resort, but a fabulous GOLF COURSE that is a treasure to play. Like all good Ross designs, this course challenges the low handicapper, but also is wide open for the high handicapper as well. Each shot is an adventure - from tee to approach to short game to putting. This is the type of course that you could play every weekend and never get bored.
Walk the course if you can--will definitely give you an appreciation of the skill of the routing/design. If you are a walking golfer with an appreciation for classic golf course design, do not miss this course.
Great layout.... Terrible coonditions
Tall weeds growing out of the fairway. Greens with major damage. Pace of play so slow that we left after playing for 3 hours on the front nive. They ran out of carts, so we had to wait to tee off. It's a shame because if they put money into the course, it would be a real gem. But the conditions were so bad that it was almost unplayable in areas. It was a rap let down.
Good Course
The Course is in very good shape, great fairways and with the exception of 2 greens, are in great shape. Challenging Greens, the layout somewhat open. there are some water challenges as well.
Nice One!
The course is in super condition...played on HOT day midweek so no crowds...check em out!
Great Greens
Greens were in great shape as always. The fairways were mostly ok but had certain areas that were bare, hard and burned out which made it very difficult and unfair when playing the ball down. Bunkers had recently been raked and were in wonderful shape. Once you got off the fairway the results would be very inconsistent ranging from bare, burned out and hard, to grass 10' high and everything in between including exposed roots everywhere. The course had many areas marked as (GUR) both in the fairways and in rough, but then right beside those areas would be areas as bad or worst that weren't marked, which once again made it very inconsistent. We played for a very good rate but in most cases the course charges upward of $80 depending on the season and would have been even more disappointing at those prices. '
Great course, terrible course management
First time to play a DR-designed course. Layout/design is great, no tricked-up holes, just great use of topography. Course in good condition. Would have been a great experience except for the unbelievably slow play. Starter guaranteed a 4 hour round. However, by the time we came off #2 green, I noticed a group in #4 fairway, a group on #4 tee box, a group waiting to get on #4 tee, a group putting on #3 green, a group waiting to hit off#3 tee, my group approaching #3 tee, and the group behind us putting on #2 green. Unfortunately, it got no better the entire round (even after a call to pro shop). Marshals did nothing noticeable to prompt faster play. They didn't even stop the boom box on one of the carts. 205 people on course at one time - apparently an outing but mgt should have limited or at least managed the play. Other than that, great course.
