Southern Pines Golf Club
About
Southern Pines Golf Club boasts a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best courses in North Carolina. The diverse layout will please traditionalists while also rewarding creative shot-makers. Originally opened in 1906 as a nine-hole course, it was later expanded to a full 18 holes in 1910. At 6,300 yards, the golf course is short by today's standards, but it will definitely test all of your shot-making skills. The course requires everything from bump-and-runs to tricky tee shots that favor accuracy over distance. There are a variety of ways to play each hole, making strategy a key element to doing well. The rugged and beautiful terrain provided by the North Carolina Sandhills is the perfect setting for golf. Not only are the surroundings lush and scenic, the rolling landscape offers a bevy of natural hazards.

Too expensive for my high handicap
Had been wanting to play this course for quite some time but at $50 (Hot deal price) way too much for my handicap. Ended up paying $34 with my birthday discount. The GolfNow gps app sucks! Could they have an option so the app stays active for more than 10 seconds? Wish I had played alone, playing along with a low handicap member was a mistake.
Played 5 rounds in last week, this one left me feeling like quitting.
Southern Pines- A Great Old Style Donald Ross course
A Great Old Style Donald Ross course. A lot of elevated greens, so carry is a must for your shots. Greens were rolling good, around a 10 on the stimp. I purchased a yardage book, but I didn't really need it as the course is right there in front of you. No trickery in the design, which I liked. I'm a 4 cap, and didn't find the greens too severe to deal with after my long winter layoff. If you want to play a Donald Ross course, this one is a good value, especially if booked on GolfNow. I played for $60 & was very happy with that!!!!! Practice area is decent, nothing exceptional, but I found the practice green to be very similar to the course greens, so spend some time on it before you tee off. A fair amount of room off the tee, so it was a nice way for me to ease in to my vacation.
Historically challenging
Played here on a Sunday morning since it was a Donald Ross original design. The tees, fairways and greens were in good upkeep, but the rest of the course not so much. The putting green is small and the driving range not a good value. The greens on this course are really hard for newcomers. Lots of tee shots over water. Overall design was great. Paid $70 so not a great value. I'd love to play again if cheaper.
Good course
Great course, good conditions
Many HILLS in the Sand Hills
The course was open but you have to enjoy hitting from elevated tee boxes and into elevated greens with false fronts. The greens were large and about as true as they get from a speed perspective -- quick but not "fast".
You have to use more or less club than you think to compensate for the elevation changes. We played after a night of rain so the roll-out was minimal.
I liked the layout and will play it again. I think this course requires several rounds to play well.
Great fun and beautiful course
Excellent arrangement and natural beauty. Greens are in great shape.
Great Value, solid course
We had a great round, the greens were in excellent condition and the course layout was enjoyable. The overall condition (good to excellent) of the course was better than expected, especially with the amount of rain the area has received. Look forward to playing the course again.
Fun in the sandhills with Ross.
This course is a super fun design with greens that were in excellent shape rolling true and fast. It really deserves a better rating if you are like me and appreciate well kept greens.
Classic Donald Ross
Got a Hot Deal for $39. Great price for a Donald Ross course that is in good condition. Greens were especially good. The clubhouse is a bit dated, and the cart paths could use some work. But you're coming here for the course, and I highly recommend it.
Classic Ross course
Even though we played this course in a monsoon it was a great time playing another great Ross course. The layout was classic Ross with waste areas placed in great spots along with bunkers everywhere. The tees, fairways and greens were all in great shape, especially for an area that had a ton of rain
Serious drainage problems
This course is not maintained to the reputation of its designer, Donald Ross. The course has serious drainage problems, not helped bu majority of the holes not having a cart path. Frankly, it does not do justice to Donald Ross. If one is looking to spend $70 on a round, I would highly recommend Talamore. The only positive feature of the course are the greens, which rolled well and true.
Challenging Greens
This was a nice course to play, a lot of elevation change. The greens were in great condition and were challenging to read. Vital to get the ball on the correct level to give yourself a chance to putt well.
Traditional Old Course in Southern Pines
Good course to play in the Pinehurst area. It's old and not in pristine shape but was better than a lot of others. Greens putted very well and the layout had some interesting holes with a driveable par 4 from the white tees. We played at mid day and felt like we were the only ones on the course. Our foursome was able to get the round in in less than 3.5 hours. Carts were in excellent condition and the staff was very friendly. Will play this one again when in the Pinehurst area.
The Hidden Gem of the Sandhills
Great course with great greens and fairways. Course plays true with tiered greens which can be fast at times. Not a lot of people know, but once they know about Southern Pines they want to come back. This course is so enjoyable to play but you will use every club in the bag. With all the hype over all these high dollar courses in the area, this is truly a hidden gem in the Sandhills !
Traditional Donald Ross
Staff very friendly. Met us with golf carts in the parking lot. Typical, tough Donald Ross layout, greens tough to read; every other hole was uphill or downhill. Great weather brought out every golfer in Southern Pines, which was why it was hit and wait. Day was so gorgeous, didn't mind waiting around for the next shot..definitely will return..
Coming around
As I was told, this course was in bad shape at one time and is now coming around after some serious maintenance. It's a classic Donald Ross design with beautiful, difficult holes and greens that run off in all directions. It was great fun to play and thanks to the players we were paired with, we were able to negotiate the blind shots without losing balls.
Run down Ross
Caught a "Hot Deal" on a Donald Ross course, on a Saturday in late August, what could be better? LOTS! Pull into the parking lot, no signs, two buildings, which one is the clubhouse? The one near the unmanned bag drop, or the one near the snack shop? (It's the one with the snack shop; left) Staff were friendly, no issues there. Driving range, supplies for a fee; old shag balls of different brands, you're sure to find a few of the brand you play! Cracked and broken cart paths, lead to dirt and rutted trails, back to broken cart paths. No what I expected from a Donald Ross course, this place could be wonderful, but seems there is no interest in having it anything other than available to play. The course itself was OK, they actually actively maintain the greens, the bunkers however could use a bit more sand and definition. Fairways were just OK, not bad, not special. Without the Donald Ross name and price that comes with it, the presentation of this course is that of a small town muni. Unfortunately this course is not getting the respect it deserves.
Way overpriced for the quality
If you are planning a golf package this course is a big disappointment. Look elsewhere.
I don't understand even golfnow has this course listed for $60, it is not worth half if that.
The course has a nice lay out, BUT the fairways are dry, cartpaths are all broken up or non existing, the driving range along with the clubhouse locker room/restroom needs major TLC. It is diffently a locals course. You can find way better for the price they r asking.
A foursome was behind us and asked how do we like their course. Being nice I said it was fine, but really wanted to tell them it was poor. Afterwards, I think they asked that as a joke.
Teriffic Design. It's a Shame.
Booked for 7 (a 3some and then 4). First 3 teed off just fine with 2 off the tee. Our 4some after did 2 off the first tee as well (We got there early and the starter said we should go right away so no warming up). He came up to us and talked during our 4th's backswing saying we need to hurry up and keep pace and they have a rule against 2 off the tee (Fine by me if they keep a good pace, if anything I'd encourage this). There was a sign in the cart that said "slow pace ONLY happens on OTHER courses" which turned out to look like a cruel joke. All of this is acceptable and applauded if anything....Until our 10 minute wait for the 2nd green. We ended up playing an over 5 hour round, all of which made the starter rushing us off the 1st sound like a cruel joke. Perhaps they should stick to the tee times not tell us to go off early if they're stacked up already.
The layout and design is absolutely great. It also plays a bit longer than the scorecard indicates with all the elevation. I loved it and it was quite hilly for the region. The conditions were mediocre at best. with shaggy fairways, tees, and greens (though they rolled fine). It's actually a shame this could be one of the premiere courses in the region if new management took over.
All in all I'd play it again if they had a $30 special or so or had new management take over, but at full rate there are 2 dozen courses in the area I'd play considering pace of play, customer service, and conditions. Donald Ross would roll over in his grave to see what's happening with his gorgeous design.
Don't show up 15 minutes before you tee off and expect to warm up on the range and then sink a few putts. There is no way getting there early and still didn't get to warm up!
