About
The Willard Byrd course at Sea Trail Plantation is one of three courses on the property, which covers 2,000 acres of creeks and wooded lots. It's in Sunset Beach, N.C., once named the top coastal destination in the U.S. by Money magazine, and in 2003, Golf Week named Sea Trail in America's best residential courses of distinction.
All three courses, by Dan Maples, Rees Jones and Willard Byrd got 4-star ratings from Golf Digest. The Byrd course is built around several, man-made lakes, from 14-20 acres and features nicely undulating greens and Byrd's trademark decorative sand and waste bunkers, constrictive treelines and greenside bunkers.
The Byrd course opened in the fall of 1990 to good reviews. No. 18 finishes between two ponds at the clubhouse. The course covers 6,750 from the blue tees with a slope rating of 128 slope. Watch for No. 2, a 174-yard par-3 over water, and No. 3, a long par-5, a dogleg right with water on the left.

Challenging but fair
Staff is always great. Course is in good shape overall, although a few tee boxes could stand improvement.

Overall very good golf experience
We were very pleasantly surprised. My son and I are low hcp golfers, who have played some very good courses,, and we really enjoyed the course. The layout and condition were top notch. The facilities were a little dated, the cart paths were rough, and there were no signs for the practice area or putting/chipping green, but those are very minor constructive comments. It was nice that this course allows practice chipping. Some courses no longer allow (I guess those courses have forgotten that they are a golf course! ) The bent greens were thick, healthy, and very consistent in the way they received approach shots and chips/pitches. They were planning to aerate the greens on Monday, the 6th, so you may want to give them a week or so to fill back in. I would definitely play this track again. Hope this is helpful to others.

Byrd Course
Like the layout. The tee boxes, fairways and greens are in bad shape. No grass on the tee boxes and the greens needed to be cut! One greeting staff at the golf cart area was very rude.

Vacation 2022 NMB
Sea Trail Byrd course was extremely dry and ground was very hard. Greens were cut long, very dry and extremely inconsistent in speed. Course layout was nice and very enjoyable, just needs water or rain to thicken, soften and green it up!

Very friendly bag staff! They welcomed us women and really went out of their way to make sure we were good.
As a 14 handicap, the tee box choice to get the right yardage was not good. It was either really short (red) or a little long (gold). We played red since we did not know the course and it was very short!
The greens on the front were horrible, they looked like a green we used to have in my backyard! Very disappointed on the greens.

Blame Covid
Nice course overall, but needs improvement ,cart paths were a mess greens were a mess.We had a good time but that’s what I do.

An Average Option
With so many courses available in the Myrtle Beach area, this course would rate as average. The greens were quite "bumpy" and most of the tee boxes were thin on grass. Small food service area as well. Friendly staff and good pace of play. Not a bad course for what we paid, but many better quality courses in this area.

bumpy greens
the greens were very bumpy and slow and so it was not a fun course when you got to the green everything else was good. maybe in few weeks it will get better but right now stay away from sea trail

SAVE YOUR MONEY!
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! I've seen nicer dog tracks. Greens are patchy and lousy, fairways in terrible shape. The owner of all three courses is apparently some foreign guy who hasn't spent a dime on the courses. Whatever you read on other reviews is FALSE - stay away from these courses - PLEASE.
I had booked this and another Sea Trails course for the following week. I couldn't cancel those reservations fast enough

This course needs improvement
We should have paid $20 more and played a much better course. The price should be $30 to ride. The cart paths had many deep potholes that could easily be filled in. Many roots made it very bumpy. The main issue was the greens were very bumpy worse than courses that had just air rated their greens. Had to have a 2-putt rule due the various types of grass on the greens. If you were just off the fairway the grass was mowed to the dirt. Many places off the fairway had no grass, so you had to stay on the fairway to have grass. I have played many municipal courses in better shape for $20 and was felt that I had wasted my time and money at this course. We did love the pace of play and the cart crew. No one in front and no one pushing us. We played mid-morning.
