About
The Willard Byrd course at Sea Trail Plantation is one of three courses on the property, which covers 2,000 acres of creeks and wooded lots. It's in Sunset Beach, N.C., once named the top coastal destination in the U.S. by Money magazine, and in 2003, Golf Week named Sea Trail in America's best residential courses of distinction.
All three courses, by Dan Maples, Rees Jones and Willard Byrd got 4-star ratings from Golf Digest. The Byrd course is built around several, man-made lakes, from 14-20 acres and features nicely undulating greens and Byrd's trademark decorative sand and waste bunkers, constrictive treelines and greenside bunkers.
The Byrd course opened in the fall of 1990 to good reviews. No. 18 finishes between two ponds at the clubhouse. The course covers 6,750 from the blue tees with a slope rating of 128 slope. Watch for No. 2, a 174-yard par-3 over water, and No. 3, a long par-5, a dogleg right with water on the left.

Great value
Course was a great value. Nice to see the course enjoying an economic growth with the the development. Green were fair. Greens were fair, freeways were nice. Pace of play was great. Look forward to my next visit.

Several greens had been sanded making them less pleasant, this reduced rating from 5 to 4. The price was a little expensive given this as well

Nice
The good- Pace of play, Nice greens and fairways. Friendly staff
The Bad- not much, cart paths are a mess. Bunkers were hard.
Would definitely play again.

Nice Course but Extremely Rude Staff
This was my first time playing here. The course was beautiful. Well kept and pretty challenging. Very scenic as well. The cart paths were very poor though. Sometimes I didn’t even know if I was on the cart path or not. The main takeaway I have from my game here is that the staff treated me terribly. I showed up 8 minutes before my tee time and the guy checking me in made me feel like I was in the wrong because I didn’t show up 20 minutes early. I asked him if that was a course rule and he said no. He then went to tell me that I was to be paired with another solo player but he already sent him assuming I wasn’t going to make it. Then he told me I inconvenienced him not coming earlier (again, I was 8 minutes early) so that he now had to get more golf carts out. He then gave me a rundown of the course rules but in a condescending tone. It put a terrible taste in my mouth and I wish I had my money back and an apology from the course. I will be avoiding playing here again and will steer all I know away as well. I hate I was treated like that because it was a great course aside from the cart paths.

Rough Greens
Played six courses in MB and conditions here were the worst. Some of the greens were unplayable and a decent amount of hard pan on the course. Layout was good…shotmakers course. Fix the greens and it’d be good

Overall Disappointing
Second course that we've played at Sea Trail. It's a bit remote from Myrtle Beach, but easy to find. There is a large bag drop area, but carts are not assigned until just before tee time. That's not normally a big problem, but the driving range is a bit of a walk and in the opposite direction of the practice green, which is also quite a walk - so plan on carrying some clubs to the range and practice green. Staff in the pro shop were friendly, but the bag drop staff seemed a bit confused and less organized. Course had a nice layout, although the fairways tend to the narrow side so a straight drive is really helpful. Fairways were in good shape, but less so around the greens. Sadly, the greens were in real bad shape - very inconsistent in texture and appearance. For the most part, the putts rolled okay but greens were hard to read and gauge speed because of the condition. Greens need to improve before this course would be considered a good value.

Pretty good course
I enjoyed my day. The only issue I had was even though we were over 50 mins from tee time we weren’t allowed to go warm up because we had to stand with our clubs. Also I was charged $25 for bringing a junior golfer because it caused two carts. That should have been listed somewhere. I made the decision to play there because he could come and play for free. Once we got passed that, the course was nice. The cart paths not so much. But the course was in good shape. Overall I would come back!

Bang for the buck
Every hole is different, challenging, but fair to all levels of golf from seniors to long ballers.
The sand bunkers are in excellent shape and very consistent. The greens on the first few holes were spotty as well as most of the fairways. Probably the time of year transitioning between types of grasses. Overall a very good experience and reasonably priced,

Great resort
Greens were a little bit patchy but everythingelse was perfect even if the course had to be played « car path only »

Back 9 Better
First 3 holes had little to no grass on them. Bumpy. Back 9 was aesthetically more pleasing and the greens were in great shape.
