Jones at Sea Trail Golf Resort and Convention Center
About
The Rees Jones course at Sea Trail Plantation is one of three courses on the property, which covers 2,000 acres of creeks and wooded lots.
It's in Sunset Beach, N.C., once named the top coastal destination in the U.S. by Money magazine, and in 2003, Golf Week named Sea Trail in America's best residential courses of distinction.
All three courses, by Dan Maples, Rees Jones and Willard Byrd got 4-star ratings from Golf Digest.
The Jones course opened in 1990 and has wide, rolling fairways and mounds and many of the elevated greens are surrounded by water. Water comes into play on 11 of the 18 holes, but those aren't the only hazards. You'll also have to deal with pot and large expanse bunkers. The course stretches to 6,761 from the tips and has a moderately difficult slope rating of 135 from the back tees. The Jones course has four sets of tees, down to 4,912 from the most forward tees.

Greens greens greens
Heard so much good stuff about this course and was excited to play. It’s evident they’ve been struggling with water. The course was super dry and played that way. The greens were in horrible shape. Large dead spots on nearly every green. It appeared like they were trying to save them by not mowing them as there were all shaggy at best. After playing Leopards Chase the day prior, we were all greatly disappointed. Glad we got the “hot deal” and didn’t pay full price.
Lots of winter kill
We played this course in the fall. Conditions were perfect and the course was as well. However, winter took its toll on the greens. Lots of winter kill. I would be hesitant to pay full price. We got a discount with a special card. When the weather warms up and the ground gets above 70 degrees to greens should come back quickly, unless they are planning a renovation. Staff was extremely helpful and friendly; even the ranger was helpful. Love playing here, just waiting on the greens to improve.
Corporate Greed is Ruining this Course
Have played this course many times over the years and am sad to say that this will probably be the last time due to management decisions to ruin this course to convert every inch of the property into brand new Ryan homes put up in record time. While I’m sure this decision has benefited sea trails financially the course has completely lost its character. Holes that used to be protected by large pines have been cut down and made soulless and are now covered with cookie cutter homes with no tree cover. Even the new clubhouse renovation seems soulless, looks to be modeled after a corporate office and not a golf course clubhouse. The greens were in disrepair on the jones course but apparently they are replacing these next month (wish I would’ve known that before booking my round). On a side note the new golf carts are really nice.
Greens
Multiple greens were in rough shape. Played here for 30+ years. It’s been in better shape before. Front nine greens were slow. Back nine were a little faster, might half been not mowed in a couple days. For 99.00 per round I’ve had better. I’ll continue to come back, great course.
Great lay out
Amazing layout and views but the greens aren’t great but they seemed to roll true. I shot 73 from the tips so it definitely isn’t bad but probably not worth the money.
New ownership, new amenities
We have played here before under the previous ownership group. The course layout and conditioning seemed to be unchanged. However the new pro shop, clubhouse and golf carts are a significant upgrade. My wife and I will be telling all of our golfing friends and are looking to return as soon as feasible.
One of my Favorites
Booking always a question. Direct or through GolfNiwto get best rates.
Reviews I read weren’t great but found them to be crabby golfers I’m guessing.
Staff was friendly but a little busy loading a “ lot” of carts
Glad I got a Golfnow hot rate
I was in town visiting family and they were busy so I booked an early afternoon tee time. Cart path only, expected. The staff was nice, starter gave me a cup of ice water and said there was no water on the course, not thrilled about that. Greens, layout, tee boxes, carts and paths good. I did not like the fairways, very sparse except near the greens. Soft and squishy due to the rain full of the furrows and strings of dead grass that the rain caused. I’ll sample the other Sea Trail courses before I come back here.
New course
Fun course playing with a couple good guys
Course was in good shape for all the rain and the only bad thing was it was cart path only for the whole course
Stay away
This course while beautifully maintained and aesthetically pleasing has many flaws.
There is no yardage on the course or GPS on the carts to help you determine distances to the holes. Both my plane partner and I became frustrated, especially because it was cartpath only. They just mowed and grass clippings everywhere which impacted balls and also was just messy. Staff was dismissive and not very pleasant to deal with from the checkout guy to the starter to the guy checking me in. All seemed as if I was a bother to them. The tea boxes were not always level and it was difficult at times to find a place to keep the ball level with my feet.
Finally, if you’re going out as the first teetime and play quickly, Do not think you’re going to be done in three hours. They stagger back nine teetimes as well to pack the course as much as possible and I had to wait 30 minutes between my front nine in my back.
Overall, very disappointing course management, it is a nice looking course
Nice course layout. Fairways are wide, good condition. Greens had some bare spots, particularly around periphery, but seemed fine within 25 feet of hole. Sand traps were hard, not raked, really not much sand. One of the biggest problems is that there is NO water to drink on the course. No coolers, no fountains. And it was HOT AF that day. We saw the beverage cart twice, on number 3 and on number 16. The bathrooms are locked. No one told us the code was printed on flag position card. Nor were we told of no water on course. Thankfully we had a cooler. We had a good time, but I think there are other courses in the area which a much better value.
