Byrd at Sea Trail Golf Resort and Convention Center
About
The Willard Byrd course at Sea Trail Plantation is one of three courses on the property, which covers 2,000 acres of creeks and wooded lots. It's in Sunset Beach, N.C., once named the top coastal destination in the U.S. by Money magazine, and in 2003, Golf Week named Sea Trail in America's best residential courses of distinction.
All three courses, by Dan Maples, Rees Jones and Willard Byrd got 4-star ratings from Golf Digest. The Byrd course is built around several, man-made lakes, from 14-20 acres and features nicely undulating greens and Byrd's trademark decorative sand and waste bunkers, constrictive treelines and greenside bunkers.
The Byrd course opened in the fall of 1990 to good reviews. No. 18 finishes between two ponds at the clubhouse. The course covers 6,750 from the blue tees with a slope rating of 128 slope. Watch for No. 2, a 174-yard par-3 over water, and No. 3, a long par-5, a dogleg right with water on the left.

Solid day at Byrd
My son and I really enjoyed the round on the Byrd course. Greens rolled well and for what a lot of area courses have gone through were in good shape. We got to see a couple of gators sunning and relaxing as we played. The only negative would be cart paths, but with it being 90 degeee wasn’t that big of deal. We will be back this summer.
Great crew greeting us
Upon arrival, we were greeted by a high energy, friendly staff. Nice way to begin the round. Course is in excellent shape. Greens were a bit slow after recent aeration — not a big deal.
rough ride
for this time of year the course was okay but the most dangerous part of the course are the golf cart paths - about as bad as I have been on - four wheel drive would of helped
Course was ok, pretty basic layout. Cold, wet and windy conditions. greens were in fair shape, a little grainy.
Golfnow booking
when I arrived at the course they didn’t have my reservation. I showed my booking and confirmation to the woman booking us in and she said that they didn’t have my booking and that there were no open tee times so there was. I thing she could do. I saw d I would call GolfNow which I did. While I was waiting on the line I logged into GolfNow and saw they there were a few open tee times at around our time. The golf now representative came back on the line and said that he had reserved another tee time for ten minutes later than our originally scheduled tee time and I went back in line to check in. While I was in line someone else was checking in under my name and was taking our tee time. it was an extremely upsetting experience.
we finally received our ticket for the starter but she was very unapologetic and made me feel like I was not a paying customer.
Disapointed
We were disappointed in the overall condition of the fairways, greens and cart paths compared to the previous rounds we have played here. The value for money was ok because we got a “hot deal”.
All the cart paths was very bad. and stoned.
When we arrived, there almost four guys to book all the starting course but nobody think of us. I think they forget about us( My wife and I). It's first time that it's happen.at the Seatrail(all courses include)
Enjoy the layout!
Despite cart path only due to amount of rain that course can't control we enjoyed our round. Staff are excellent! Like the variety of tee boxes and the greens were fast and in great condition. Really enjoyed our day!
Solid layout
Nice solid layout with a traditional Carolina look and feel. Holes went right and left and didn't favor a particular shot shape. Short par five finishing hole gave me a chance to reach in two. Water in play but no severe forced carries. Very enjoyable course to play.
Cart Path Only
Course was very slippery but that was nature's fault. Otherwise, nice course...fun.
Sadly previous reviews pretty accurate Course is old & TIRED
I’ve played over 50 courses in Myrtle Beach. I had read the reviews about Sea Trail and took them with a grain of salt (I find some expect to much). However, if Byrd is the best conditioned of the 3, this place is in trouble.
On a positve, staff was friendly. I got there early and the starter got me out ahead of a number of groups he expected would be slow. He broke the bad news that it was cart path only, but I still finished in 3 hours. That’s about the only positive I could find.
On the first tee it tells you that it’s hole 1 on the Byrd Course. No yardage’s, no par for the hole, no sign showing the hole. I then looked at my scorecard and the yardage’s seemed to be inaccurate, and hole layout didn’t really match. Get to the about the 4th hole and I discover the problem, they had given me a card for the Rees Course. I detoured after 9 to get a correct card, which helped. Since there is no course info on the course, be sure you have the correct card, the starter doesn’t.
Cart path only for a reason. It’s wet in the whole area right now. At The Byrd the fairways were thinner than any I’ve played, so buried balls were the norm. MORE THAN 50% of my shots embedded. Mud balls, with no ball washers on the course, or the carts, was messy. These are small details that make a difference. No other course I’d played in the last 12 days has been nearly this muddy.
Greens were slow, and putts wiggled as they slowed down. Even the cups were old. Cart paths are brutal. More bumps & potholes than smooth stretches. There were more leaves all over this course than the other 7 I’ve played here recently, COMBINED.
Sadly this course looks like they no longer put any money in to it. There are too many decent courses in the area for me to spend my time, or money, at Sea Trail again (at least until there is serious effort in to course improvements). I love the game, and hate to put up a bad review, but felt I owed it to my fellow golfers.
Beautiful day at the golf course.
It was a fine day to play golf despite very soggy conditions. There was no roll out on shots so every shot played longer than you’d expect. Greens were a s good as I’ve seen over this winter.. I like the course and it’s layout.
Soggy Golf
Greens were in good shape. Rest of course was art path only. Extremely wet. Lots of plugged shots on and off the fairway. Course really needs 3-4 days of sunshine.

Nice course.
We enjoyed playing this course, the layout was nice and you use most of your clubs. Clubhouse was not well stocked for a Carolina course and the lady who checked us in was NOT very pleasant. The starter and other outside staff were great. Course was a bit rough but it is still winter so will definitely go back in the summer as we now live on the coast.
Some thing. For everyone
I loved the layout, staff were very friendly , the only thing that was wrong was that the course is very wet do
To the bad weather lately
Still enjoyed it very much. I will add it to my play again list.
Thank You
Soggy but sweet
Course was beautiful and fair for an average player. Unfortunately the course was soggy - Littleton no roll and a few plugged balls if hit too high intof fairway
Not worth the effort or the money!
Neither the pro shop or the starters got us off to a good start. Neither we're informative or welcoming.
Fairways & greens were soaked. Plugged balls aplenty!
Would have to play when all is dry to give it a fair rating.
Great October Day
Had a beautiful day, course was in great shape considering they had gone through a hurricane nd tropical storm in last month. Had a great overall experience.
