Byrd at Sea Trail Golf Resort and Convention Center
About
The Willard Byrd course at Sea Trail Plantation is one of three courses on the property, which covers 2,000 acres of creeks and wooded lots. It's in Sunset Beach, N.C., once named the top coastal destination in the U.S. by Money magazine, and in 2003, Golf Week named Sea Trail in America's best residential courses of distinction.
All three courses, by Dan Maples, Rees Jones and Willard Byrd got 4-star ratings from Golf Digest. The Byrd course is built around several, man-made lakes, from 14-20 acres and features nicely undulating greens and Byrd's trademark decorative sand and waste bunkers, constrictive treelines and greenside bunkers.
The Byrd course opened in the fall of 1990 to good reviews. No. 18 finishes between two ponds at the clubhouse. The course covers 6,750 from the blue tees with a slope rating of 128 slope. Watch for No. 2, a 174-yard par-3 over water, and No. 3, a long par-5, a dogleg right with water on the left.

Slow pace
All was good except the pace. Took around 5 hours to finish. No marshall came around to try to speed up slow players.
Lots of kinks to work out
Unfriendly staff, super fast greens, poor draining fairways. Would not play here again.
Byrd current condition 12/15/2024
The Bryd course is underwater from the sprinkler system. I played the front 9 holes and quit. Staff allowed us to play the front 9 holes of the Jones course to complete our 18 holes. The Jones course was in great condition.
Sea Trails total review in detail if you plan to visit
I’m reviewing the ENTIRE Sea Trails resort if you are planning a trip!
We stayed on Sea Trails property. It hasn’t been updated in at least 20 years. There was a VCR with VHS tapes in our unit. It was for the most part clean, but in desperate need of paint or at the least walls washed. The carpet was gross. We were there with 52 guys and all had the same complaints and we were spread out over the property.
The Biatro 55 restaurant and new bar/clubhouse is exceptional! The food was great and everything was newer. It’s clear this is where they started. Kudos on this part.
Golf Courses-
The Maples is ALMOST UNPLAYABLE. I will attach photos. Several greens were mud and diseased.
The Jones course was FAIR but not great if you are on vacation, it’s like a decent muni in your hometown .
The Byrd course is EXCEPTIONAL PLAY THIS ONE. They just reopened it and it is fantastic. FROM TEE TO GREEN.
They are dumping a lot of money and redoing the Maples and Jones. I’d give it 2-3 years to be totally redone.
Plenty of other courses to play.
The wind makes a difference
20 mph winds, gusting to 30 and high fifties made this tough day. The course was still good and a winner. I enjoy this course
Soon after reopen
Great shape on greens fairways, bunkers & paths.interesting layout. Will return.
Byrd Course review
We played the Byrd course yesterday as a a twosome. Pace of Play was good and the course was in pretty good shape with some more work needed on some of the tees. The greens, bunkers and cart paths were in great shape. We really enjoyed the course and would definitely play it again.
New club house Ordinary Couy
The facility is in the midst of a much needed makeover. The new clubhouse is beautiful. The course has new cart paths, rest rooms and refurbished bunkers. The staff is friendly. The winter conditions have begun to set in and there is a lot of dead sod and brown grass. The course is fun but not overly challenging. I would like to play it again in the spring when it’s in prime shape.
Wonderful job on the renovations
Owners did a great job on the course renovations. Design was always a classic but new greens, bunkers and cart paths make for a wonderful experience. Highly recommended.
