Byrd at Sea Trail Golf Resort and Convention Center
About
The Willard Byrd course at Sea Trail Plantation is one of three courses on the property, which covers 2,000 acres of creeks and wooded lots. It's in Sunset Beach, N.C., once named the top coastal destination in the U.S. by Money magazine, and in 2003, Golf Week named Sea Trail in America's best residential courses of distinction.
All three courses, by Dan Maples, Rees Jones and Willard Byrd got 4-star ratings from Golf Digest. The Byrd course is built around several, man-made lakes, from 14-20 acres and features nicely undulating greens and Byrd's trademark decorative sand and waste bunkers, constrictive treelines and greenside bunkers.
The Byrd course opened in the fall of 1990 to good reviews. No. 18 finishes between two ponds at the clubhouse. The course covers 6,750 from the blue tees with a slope rating of 128 slope. Watch for No. 2, a 174-yard par-3 over water, and No. 3, a long par-5, a dogleg right with water on the left.

Decent layout needs some work
The staff is friendly, the layout is avg to a little above avg, and there was a beverage cart that came around once on each nine. The cart paths are on very poor condition, tee boxes and some fairway areas are thin, and they are heavily watering the new winter rye causing some very, very soggy areas on a few fairways and green approaches. Seems like too much watering in places. Do not expect to play bump and run. Winter over seeding on greens is growing nicely though.
Lady Friendly
Wife loved the course as forward tees were very fair to ladies. The course was in good shape after all the recent weather damage.
Great day, great course
The course is challenging with nice conditions. Front of the greens very wet et too soft, ball plugs each hole. Green very good, a bit long.
Average conditions
The conditions were average. The greens were not cut and should have been. It hadn't rained for a while and the course still showed areas with puddles in spots. The sand traps were not in great shape. There was hardly any sand in all of the traps. This was disappointing. The layout is great but there should have been more maintenance done. For the price, I can't really complain but there were others who paid a lot more to play the same conditions.
Very Disapointing
Although the course was dry, the greens had not been mowed in days. The bunkers, most, were not repaired or raked since the hurricane....The rough also had not been mowed in days....Although it was a Monday we saw no one working on the course, not even removing debris from the hurricane.
Fair
Cart paths in desperate need of repair/replacement.
Soggy course = cart path only = slow round.
Greens were SLOW.
Course attendants were pleasant, even apologetic about course conditions.
challenging
Our regular foursome took trip to Myrtle Beach area where we stayed and played at Sea Trail Resort. Weather was kinda rough with rain in and out through the weekend.Heavy at times. Course was cart path only, which was completely understandable. That being said, we had a great time as we played the Jones and Byrd course. The Byrd course was tough, challenging, and with course being wet played long. Course drained well but a lot of rain. Even with the rain the course was in great condition from fairway to green. Traps were tough but packed hard with rain standing in some. Would definitely play there again hoping it would be drier.
Awesome course
My father in law and I really enjoyed this course. Friendly staff and the course was in great condition. We will definitely be playing here again.
Outstanding
Played as a twosome and the golfers on the course allowed us to play through 3 times and we finished in 3:15 despite playing cart path only. Was a really enjoyable day.
One of my favorites
Fun and fair layout in very nice condition.
Excellent staff that is very helpful and friendly.
Excellent round
The course was in great shape and greens roll true. It is challenging and you need to focus on shot making to score well but not punitive if you remain in play. The pace of play was outstanding played under 4 hrs and will play again
heavy top dressing
no warning from the pro shop that the greens were being sanded that day. and the bunkers were not raked and needed sand.
Great layout
Played the next day after a huge storm. Course drains great a few wet spot but not bad at all after all the rain. Greens where still pretty quick with the weather. Great food in the snack bar. Would play again.
Good resort course worth playing
Played here 2nd week of July 2016. Used a Hot Deal to get an excellent price on a really good course. (The Hot Deal was during the heat of the day, but that's okay by me!) Conditions were very good, greens were soft, tee boxes lush, and only a few brown spots in fairways. Driving range was bogus, in that for some reason, you couldn't drive your cart to the range! I thought real hard about that one, and couldn't understand why they would do this. So, we started off in a bad mood. (Quickly receded after we got on the course.) Also, being a resort course, the cart girl is around a lot. They do not allow coolers, which is a little problematic at 2pm in July! Played here twice while on vacation. Definitely worth playing.
ok
Nothing to complain about, nothing to rave about. It was a golf course in NC in August. Greens were firm and true, fairways and tee-boxes were good. Worth playing, but do not make it the highlight of your week.
Beautiful courses condition and a very fair test of golf
I gave the course layout a three for one reason. Some of the places you have to park the cart is a long walk to the green. I say this because I have bad legs and find it difficult to make those walks. If I had good legs I would have gave it a five, excellent.
Worth playing
Played here 1st week of July. Conditions were very good, no bare spots on any greens, fairways were good (w/only a few thin spots), tee boxes were in excellent shape. Bunkers, not so much. Sand was not fluffy or soft. Fairways were wide enough for me to work my left-to-right off the tee box. Water hazards were marked with yellow flags, easy to see. Check this course out when you are in the area, it is worth playing.
The Byrd course use to be a good course.
unfortunately this course and its sister courses have suffered in recent years. Save your money. Golf Now doesn't tell you greens were punched and sand covered. tee boxes almost barren. cart paths need lots of help. generally disappointing...i guess that's why it was cheap. Go somewhere else.
Thanks for the review! We're glad to hear you find our course to be worth playing. Hope to see you again soon!
