Very Hilly
Course is quite hilly with lots of hummocks, dips and tilted lies. It has a fair number of blind tee shots. Greens are very undulating. There is some water hazards but not excessive. Plenty of sand. We played before the fairways greened up. Some holes were just too tilted and hillly and did not reward good tee shots. Greens were quite difficult for the average golfer. No water available on course today. No water in ball cleaners. Overall this course was just ok for the money for me.
Worst experience on a golf course ever
Just awful...words can't even explain how bad this course was. The only glimmer of hope was the sweet woman that worked the bar/grill area. Everything else was horrible.
Good winter conditions
Great value, friendly staff and very slow paying conditions. Novice (first timers probably) were allowed on course and caused sever backup, no marshall and finally a member was sent out to inform the slow party to leave. Course in good condition considering very harsh winter.
Hard to rate
It was 38 degrees with about a 28mph wind. The greens were hard as a rock and no overseed. In good conditions it's a fun place to play.
Shape
Good shape for this time of year. Greens and fairways are in great condition
I know it's winter golf, but...
Grass on tee boxes and the fairway is preferred...
Good greens, ok fairways, back 9 ugly
They over booked the course and ran out of carts and range balls. Our cart was 20 yrs old, backfired, and choked us all day. Fairways are not maintained but greens are good. The back 9 has been stripped of the trees. It took almost 5 hours for three of us to play 18. Basically it's a $20 course
Fun Course
This course has the best golf carts. The greens were in really good shape, and very challenging greens.. The tee boxes needed some work. They do not sell liquor at the course which was a bummer. And keep in mind that county does not sell beer on sundays so you will need to BYOB on sunday. The staff was very nice and were ok that we were a few minutes late. They have great rates on golf now.
Greens putted nicely, in good shape for February
This was a good golf course with a great layout. One of the more interesting courses in the metro Columbia area. Greens rolled very nicely, some of the fastest I've played. And the greens still held approach shots well. Only complaint was the pace of play. This round lasted FOREVER, and not just because of one guy in my foursome who goes into deep meditation over two foot putts for triple.
Challenging
I really enjoyed the coarse, conditions were not the best with it being cold, and soggy fairways due to the abundance of rain. It played long, but fair. The rolling greens were quite difficult if the ball was placed on the wrong side of the green, they seemed quite fast when dry, slow when damp. The par 5 16th is a bear, all others holes were challenging, but playable.
Decent shape for the weather, poor customer service
Took advantage of a "Hot Deal" and paid $20 for 18. Can't beat that. Course was in okay shape, even considering the season. Cobblestone, Oak Hills, and Fort Jackson are in much better shape. Facilities seem run-down. Range hasn't been touched or groomed in who knows how long. And the range balls were old. Old, old. Rocks. All that said, for $20 no problem.
So why won't I come back? Customer service. We'll start with the check in. When asked for the confirmation I mistakenly thought he meant the number from the email I received from them. He said no, we don't send out emails. Well, I beg to differ since I rec'd an email from info@indianrivergolfclub.net. Anyway, after we worked it out, I was given range balls and told to meet up with the threesome I was getting matched up at the designated time. About 10min prior to that I was informed that the threesome brought a fourth and I would have to tee off right then. And oh btw, enjoy the round, it'll be slow because singles are ignored out here. And he was right, despite it not being crowded at all (8 cars in the parking lot) I played 18 holes in a little over 5 hours.
Now, I understand that a single on a weekend is gonna wait and it's gonna be slow. But I would have been in a foursome if I hadn't been booted out of the tee time I paid for.
I MAY try them again in-season. But if you're gonna spend $30+, do it at Cobblestone, Oak Hills, or Fort Jackson (if you can get on post).
Happy swinging.
great value without sacrificing conditions
Course was in good shape and the staff was friendly. Greens were fast and in good shape. I had a great time.
Course test all facets of game.
Course was in good shape for winter. Greens rolled great. Only beef was that the front and back nine greens were rolling differently, since the back nine is exposed to the winds. Back nine were consistently quicker. Always enjoy playing this course.
I will definitly go back.
This is a nice golf course. Nice fairways and well maintained greens.I would recommend it.
Enjoyed this course - will be back in the spring
We played Indian River on a cold and windy afternoon Nov. 13th. The course was in surprising good condition given the time of year. The layout is very well done - especially considering it winds through a community. Some community courses are too tight and require perfect drives down the middle. This design allows plenty of opportunity from the tee boxes. The greens were very fast, but in nice condition. Not sure if it was the time of year or always that fast. We will be back in the spring to play again to see how it plays when it's green again. Very much recommend this course.
This course has challenging greens.
I showed up at the course and had booked a tee time for two people. My buddy couldn't make it but I went anyway. I told the gentleman who was waiting on me that i would pay for two since my tee time was not changed 24 hours in advance. He refused and only charged me for myself. He took a few minutes to explain the course to me and recommended that I "roll a few" on the putting green before hitting #1. I was very pleased on how the staff treated every customer and will definitely play this course on a regular basis.
Worth the deal price.
Course was tough but playable from the white (forward) tee. Length is only an issue in a couple of spots. Greens were speedy and tough. Overall, a great $30 course. Much better can be had for their usual $40-45 rate in the Columbia area, though. 4 star review is based on $25 rate. Anything over $30 would have brought the score down one star.
Challenging greens
Great course, has some challenging holes. Fairly easy, greens are firm, very fast but very true to putt on
Great Place to play
Slightly difficult, but a fun course to play. I would recommend this place to anyone. Great value.
