Stumpy Lake Golf Course
About
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones design that provides a unique golfing experience. This scenic layout is routed across a 1,400-acre nature preserve that is absent of any commercial or residential development for miles. The golf course wraps around its namesake lake, which has a canoe and kayak launch as well as a fishing pier. Deer, fox, and eagles are frequently seen on the course and there has even been the occasional bear sighting. Water has a prominent presence throughout and there are also several strategically placed bunkers. Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a layout that will force you to be creative with your shot making but it's still approachable enough for high handicappers to tackle with confidence. If you're looking to get in even more golf, sister club Honey Bee is located almost right next door.

Wonderfully surprised
We found this course by chance, not knowing what to expect ,upon arrival we were met with the happiest the most friendliest people I've ever met and golf course. We checked in early, had breakfast and then went out to see the starter to see if we could start a little early. Everyone from the desk clerk to the cook to the starter and marshals were absolutely phenomenal. Note to the city of Virginia Beach, and Staff of the golf course job well done. Thanks for making our day a great day your staff is absolutely wonderful.
good old fashion Bobby Jones course
great old fashion course. doglegs and small greens. challenging and fun.
Hidden Gen
Great course with challenging dog-legs and well kept! Only negative against this course is that it does not drain water hardly at all after it rains. Greens roll true and course in general is in great shape. Highly recommend.
Stumpy Lake GC
We played in April, after a rain, so it was very wet. Tees and greens were in very good shape. In another month, this will be a very nice course.
Get what you pay for
I booked this tee time for $20. The fairways, tee boxes, and greens were all in bad condition. Hitting off the dirt in the middle of the fairways was bad just like putting on a rocky green. I opted to buy a bucket of range balls to practice prior to playing, however the range machine was out and so I notified the staff. They had to get in the range cart to go retrieve balls, so I took the liberty to walk on the right fringe of the range to collect a dozen balls myself and of course got reprimanded for it. I told the cart guy, if he would have done his job, then I wouldn't have had to get my own range balls. Overall, not a great experience, not sure I will be back this year.
Pleasantly surprised
Good non-residential golf on a good course layout at a great price.

Sunny day started of cold and warmed up. Fairways were wet so there was no roll and the ball stuck in the ground so we had to lift, clean and place. Greens were good, a little slow but in good shape.
Fun course
My golfing partner Dennis and I play Stumpy Lake fairly often, the course is close to where we live and is pretty well maintained, wet this time of year so there is a lot of walking. Some holes are more complex than others so it can be trying. Highly recommend the course if you are ever in this area.
Superb condition! Wonderful layout!
A wonderful layout in the best condition of any course I've played in the area. Traps are raked and groomed! Tee boxes and greens are in excellent condition for December. My new favorite course in the area. Ready to come back!
A day at Stumpy...
The course wasn't in bad shape, but it is getting it's Winter coat, which is to be expected this time of year. Like always, drainage at this course is ALWAYS and issue. Even if it doesn't rain for several days, there are always wet areas on this course. The tee boxes were just Ok and the fairways are starting to go dormant. The greens "appear" to be on the cut-every-other-day schedule as they were a bit fluffy and some what slow. Took a few holes to get the pace down.
The staff, the clubhouse and carts are all great. We had a great time playing as long as you stayed out of the leaves...Oh my, the leaves. Lost a couple of balls just off the fairway because of leaves. Winter rules!!! All in all, a good time on a weather perfect day on the 1st of December...72 degrees and bright sunshine. Can't beat that!
Not a bad venue for an outing
The course has come a long way. Drains a lot better than it used to .Not a bad place for an outing
Great Greens
The course is in great shape the greens were awesome. The fairways are maybe average but it is what I expected. All the bunkers had nice sand in them and were well groomed. The wide tree lined fairways are fun too play on with not a house in sight. I will be back soon.
Nice straight forward tract
No gimmicks--just straight forward golf. Make sure you locate the water hazards. Greens running true.
good course fo the value
I play this course three of four times a year. Each year they seem to improve the course either tee box's or green's and fairways. This year the course in good shape. The greens are not to slow or to fast and are pretty true. The only negitive is the leaves should be cleared further back from the edge of the fairway so you can find your ball easly and not be fustrated with hitting decent shot and not being able to find your ball. The Staff is friendly and the rangers are respectful when asking you to pick you pace of play.
Stumpy Lake is such a beautiful place
I love the course, the people are incredibly nice and I love the wildlife and natural areas.

Course in great condition!
I thoroughly enjoyed my time on this course. I hit from the white tees, which provided the most challenge on the doglegs. The tee boxes, fairways, and greens were in excellent shape. The course was preparing for the club championship and the female golfer I was playing with was a little vexed the ladies' tees were anywhere from 30-50 yards further back from where they were normally. When she asked the clubhouse upon completion of our round, she was told there was a discrepancy in yardages on the scorecard and they were matching those yardages to the ladies' tee box for the club championship. They plan to move the tees back after the championship. If true (and I have no reason to believe it otherwise), there may still be a discrepancy on the scorecard after the championship. All other yardages, from the white tee perspective and how I personally hit, were right on. Nothing big there, just something to note. Great scenery when around the lake. The greens were not difficult. Most putts were straight and I think I only had two that broke more than 2-3 inches outside the cup.
This was a great course and I fully intend to return to play more since it is close to my residence. Highly recommended!
Beautiful backdrop
Stumpy Lake is always a pleasure to play! Although this is my first season playing and I don't have too much to compare it too. Of the courses that I have played, this has quickly become one of my favorites. The backdrop of the lake and the feeling of being surrounded by wilderness is one of the greatest joys of playing the course. The course is well maintained and the staff is friendly and always willing to provide guidance. The course itself is moderately challenging and offers a wide variety of obstacles in the form of water and wood. The greens are challenging to read, thus the moniker "no break at Stumpy Lake". All in all, I always have a good time at this course and always look forward to the next round there.
One of my regular spots
Stumpy lake was the first course I played in Hampton Roads and I always find myself going back. If you play after a rainy day the course can get pretty muggy but that can be said about most courses. It's not terribly difficult for a beginner like me but still presents a challenge like water in play and the woods if you hit erratic tee shots. The greens are OK for the most part. A few can use some work but can't beat the value for $15 to $20 a person if you find a tee time using the golf now app. Like I said, one of my regular spots so they are doing something right
Most boring course I have ever played. Every hole looks exactly likethe hole before.
The course is in miserable condition. The tee boxes are pathetic. The greens were aerated and lumpy. All the par 3's were approx. 160 yrs. with a trap on either side of the green. Do not play this course at any price.
