Stumpy Lake Golf Course
About
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones design that provides a unique golfing experience. This scenic layout is routed across a 1,400-acre nature preserve that is absent of any commercial or residential development for miles. The golf course wraps around its namesake lake, which has a canoe and kayak launch as well as a fishing pier. Deer, fox, and eagles are frequently seen on the course and there has even been the occasional bear sighting. Water has a prominent presence throughout and there are also several strategically placed bunkers. Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a layout that will force you to be creative with your shot making but it's still approachable enough for high handicappers to tackle with confidence. If you're looking to get in even more golf, sister club Honey Bee is located almost right next door.

good course fo the value
I play this course three of four times a year. Each year they seem to improve the course either tee box's or green's and fairways. This year the course in good shape. The greens are not to slow or to fast and are pretty true. The only negitive is the leaves should be cleared further back from the edge of the fairway so you can find your ball easly and not be fustrated with hitting decent shot and not being able to find your ball. The Staff is friendly and the rangers are respectful when asking you to pick you pace of play.
Stumpy Lake is such a beautiful place
I love the course, the people are incredibly nice and I love the wildlife and natural areas.

Course in great condition!
I thoroughly enjoyed my time on this course. I hit from the white tees, which provided the most challenge on the doglegs. The tee boxes, fairways, and greens were in excellent shape. The course was preparing for the club championship and the female golfer I was playing with was a little vexed the ladies' tees were anywhere from 30-50 yards further back from where they were normally. When she asked the clubhouse upon completion of our round, she was told there was a discrepancy in yardages on the scorecard and they were matching those yardages to the ladies' tee box for the club championship. They plan to move the tees back after the championship. If true (and I have no reason to believe it otherwise), there may still be a discrepancy on the scorecard after the championship. All other yardages, from the white tee perspective and how I personally hit, were right on. Nothing big there, just something to note. Great scenery when around the lake. The greens were not difficult. Most putts were straight and I think I only had two that broke more than 2-3 inches outside the cup.
This was a great course and I fully intend to return to play more since it is close to my residence. Highly recommended!
Beautiful backdrop
Stumpy Lake is always a pleasure to play! Although this is my first season playing and I don't have too much to compare it too. Of the courses that I have played, this has quickly become one of my favorites. The backdrop of the lake and the feeling of being surrounded by wilderness is one of the greatest joys of playing the course. The course is well maintained and the staff is friendly and always willing to provide guidance. The course itself is moderately challenging and offers a wide variety of obstacles in the form of water and wood. The greens are challenging to read, thus the moniker "no break at Stumpy Lake". All in all, I always have a good time at this course and always look forward to the next round there.
One of my regular spots
Stumpy lake was the first course I played in Hampton Roads and I always find myself going back. If you play after a rainy day the course can get pretty muggy but that can be said about most courses. It's not terribly difficult for a beginner like me but still presents a challenge like water in play and the woods if you hit erratic tee shots. The greens are OK for the most part. A few can use some work but can't beat the value for $15 to $20 a person if you find a tee time using the golf now app. Like I said, one of my regular spots so they are doing something right
Most boring course I have ever played. Every hole looks exactly likethe hole before.
The course is in miserable condition. The tee boxes are pathetic. The greens were aerated and lumpy. All the par 3's were approx. 160 yrs. with a trap on either side of the green. Do not play this course at any price.
AIR RAIDED GREENS
I had no idea the greens had been air raided until i got up to the first green. Overall the course was in good shape I just hate playing right after they air raid the greens. I will go back just to play again once the greens are in better shape.
Good value
All in all nice place to play. Got a little jammed up. Lots of singles playing so many were waiting. But a nice play to play.
excellent course
Course was in great condition, speed of play was about 3 1/2 hours for 18. Had a great time, will be back soon.
Good Local course
I have played Stumpy Lake many times and the fairways and greens were as good as I have every seen them
That course I never think about
I seem to always forget about Stumpy when planning a golf day. Except for the bugs that I worry might carry my ball away, this is a very good course. Challenging holes for a guy with my skills, but chances to make a good score, too.
Horrible pace of play
I took a friend from out of town to play here he rented clubs. They rental price was ridiculously high. We had a golf now 312 tee time showed up early to hit balls but the range was closed bc no one had picked balls. The course was wide open at 220 when we got there but the course wouldn't let us go out until our tee time. At 3 o'clock when the rates changed there was 10 groups on the tee. The 4 some in front of us 5 hour to play their round. But at 745 we were asked to head in and skip the 18th hole. Where were the rangers suing the round keeping up pace of play for my group and the 8 others behind us that tee'd off around 3 but were not able to finish. I was very disappointed in the way they managed the course not allowing people to go off early when the range was closed and then stacking us all up at 3 and not being able to finish. They treat golf now tee times very poorly. If they don't want to sell on golf now then don't sell the tee times but treat the golfers that want to play at discounted rates with some respect instead of making sure they can't finish their round. I won't play here again anytime soon.
Nice Course Friendly Staff
Nice round of golf. Course was in good shape with greens about a 7.5 our of 10. Friendly staff. Driving range was closed the day I played due to mechanical issue with equipment to retrieve balls. Enjoyable round.
Foul play
The Marshall was very rude about the pace that everyone was keeping. The course was nice but they need to get rid of the marshall
Sunday good round
A public course with friendly starter and concession staff. Rental clubs were knock offs in pretty poor condition. Greens were surprisingly running great. Many tee boxes were sparse but majority of the rest of course was in good condition. We would come back here when I'm in tidewater.
Solid Course, Nicely Maintained
Stumpy has always been a fairly straightforward course to play, but in years past the quality of the fairways and greens were lacking. They have finally rectified that and it is an enjoyable place to play. The holes don't have you make many strategy decisions so it is more of a relaxing atmosphere then a grind most days.
Our pace of play yesterday morning was pretty poor, but I can't blame that directly on the course.
Their food and drink prices are some of the best I've seen. I had a hot dog and a beer at the 19th hole for only 5.75!
great layout with some very challenging tee shots
Hadn't play stumpy for a while. Course was in very good shape. Tee shot is important to score successfully. Fun place to play
Great back nine layout
For as much rain as we have had over the last 2 weeks the course was in better than average shape. I really like the course layout over at stumpy lakes but like most courses in the area the tee boxes could use a little work.
Great Shape.
I was first off the tee and was done playing by 9:15 am. The greens are as good as any and will all the rain we're having the ball sticks. It's a fun course with doglegs going left and right and some nice par threes. The staff were all friendly and helpful. I will be back. Would be a good course to walk, tees and greens are reasonably close and the course is pretty flat. I saw a whole group of deer just off of the cart path.
Great course! Staff...not so much.
The course was very nice & in great condition. It's a very quite setting on the lake. Unfortunately, the staff needs some assistance in the client relationship department. We were paired up with other Golf Now players, which was great, but were scrutinized for what we paid for our green fees by some of the staff. In an area where there are 40 plus courses to play, they shouldn't act the way the did. We'll go back because we liked the course and hopefully will not be treated the way we were when we played this time.
